Got a very nice drone setup here. Absolutely love it. The DJI HD goggles are a blast. They have head tracking where when I am flying I can control the camera gimble with my head movements.
Yeah they have a lot of cool tech. Wasnt a fan of the geo fencing, but then found that you can bypass the "medium restricted" areas with a little bit of extra information.
Seems cool but I don't like the idea of them being banned in so many places and then needing a license to fly them in the remainder of places you're actually allowed in.
I live in a small town. No airports or hospitals or anything near me. I honestly need to understand more if my last flight was even legal. I am pretty sure I was above 400 feet. oops.
I have an older model that's a blast to fly, not as cool as your head being able to control the gimble. Drones can be a ton of fun, I have a smaller cheap 200 dollar model that my kids love to play with, even the cat loves to chase it around the house lol.
First person I thought of was MrWunderful, he posted a few neat videos one day. Oh...and don't lookup the thread about "the drone going in someone else's yard" lol.
I bought a small/cheap $20 one a while back, one of the motors stopped working though and I haven't gotten around to fixing it. That looks amazing, be sure to enjoy it!
Edit: Just now bothered trying to fix it, 5 minutes and it's already fixed .

This is exactly what i thought of lol Both parts. Make sure if it goes down you can retrieve it If it lands in certain peoples yards they may just toss it out.

Yeah I am super jelly of a location like yours. I live within 10 miles of SFO. I have to travel out of the bay area to even fly. No drones at beaches or any state parks in CA without permission. They only grant permission to actual drone photography license holders, and to get that I think you have to get your ham radio license first.

My drone before this was a $40 Sky Viper from
walmart. It actually flys amazing and stable and
still have it. I did crash and break a prop in the house though. Thank goodness no more damage happened. I am glad I bought a very entry level

Holy crap dude. Thats more hoops than I would want to jump through but dang the itch I have this morning already wanting to go capture some video of the sunrise. There a big cemetery just a few blocks from me a fly over during sun rise would be great. Heres a snap of my town. Only 1000 people. This is 400 feet above my back patio facing NE.

I have read that whole thread as it was happening. lol. My biggest fear is my drone malfunctioning and losing it on someones property. My heart is racing during flights.

There seems to be an actual advantage to living in small town!! Well until I cause some drama when my drone falls out of the sky onto a highway. Lol

Unless your laws are different there, you still need a license to fly it anywhere or you can get a $20,000 fine. You can't just buy a drone, go outside and start flying it.

I thought you just need to register it.
You just need to register it.
The license was only ever required for commerical use, not personal use. (And I think i read that those rules were relaxed so that it was eaiser to do commercial photography)
That said, the law is still very strict about actual visual line of sight flying.
So you can't really legally fly via the camera view, and have to maintain actual visual contact with the drone.
Part 107 waivers aren't something you are automatically entitled to, so unless you have a good reason for it, and can demonstrate the necessary technical background and pilot background, I wouldn't expect it to be granted.
As a hobbyist, I don't think I would waste my time with it, unless you were going to Branch out professionally.
Also, you have to get your part 107 operator certificate first anyway, before you can get a waiver for the restrictions.
So what exactly is the appeal of these things? Just taking aerial pictures? How long can that be interesting?
You can also have them track you automatically so if you're dirt biking or snowboarding, it'll capture your run. They're banned in ski resorts right now though, so back country only. Watch out for trees!

Pictures, video, you can monitor in real time if you have the right setup. Good for events, or filmmaking (you can make a professional looking movie for mad cheap now), or travel around and get aerial photos of places you've never seen from a perspective you can't get from the ground. Not to mention just the fun of flying and maintaining a drone if you're into that sort of thing. Amazing what you can do if you expand your mind a little.
I think you’re required to have the registration number displayed on the quad. I bought one of those skins and just put it on there that way I didn’t have to put it directly onto the drone itself.
Post some video when you get a chance, and later if I remember ill post some Raw video

Correct. I printed out my UAS Certification Number on a label. Going to put it on this evening. I may have decent video to upload. I screwed around with my landing too much so its not as seamless as I would like! lol
It's not legal to fly using the headset? That's the only reason I would want one of these. I don't want to watch it fly around, I want to fly around MYSELF!
It's not hard to get a ham radio license, if anyone is interested ping me. You don't have to know morse code.

I am going to be seeking my 107 waivers for a few things.
I will let you all know how it goes.

Registering it on The FAA site is all I did too.
As long as you aren't operating commercially, and you follow the recreational operator guidelines, then registration is all you need to do.
So what exactly is the appeal of these things? Just taking aerial pictures? How long can that be interesting?
Like any hobby. For some it's fun, for others they won't see the appeal. Same way some people look at collecting old video games
I don't personally like drones, but i can imagine they are fun to fly. And taking pictures is just a bonus and another thing to do with them.
Photography is its own hobby completely and that hobby alone holds peoples interests for a lifetime in most cases.
Depending on the drone as well, people race them, and it actually looks pretty intense. Just like RC cars or anything else.

Thats what I read too. Going commercial is whole other ball game.
I am now registered with the FAA. Boom
