Ralph Breaks the Internet

Brought my kids to see the new Wreck it Ralph yesterday.  It was pretty good, though I would say a step below the first one.  There were definetly some clever takes on internet life, and the disney princess stuff was fun.  If you go be sure to stay through the credits, very funny part at the end.

Thoughts from others who have seen it?

My biggest complaint was the $85 it cost me to bring my wife and two boys to a maitenee!  It had been awhile since I've gone to a first run movie.

  • Woah, hope you had a good time at that rate - but sure the boys loved it - going to a movie theater when younger was such a great experience. Glad to hear it's not a bad movie, I really liked the first one.
  • $85 buck-a-roos! Ouch!

Havent been to the movies in forever. Was that just 4 ticket prices or did you partake in the consession stand too?
  • $85?!

    Wow.

I'm planning on seeing it sometime in Dec because I figure if I wait just long enough...I might get lucky and have the theater to myself.
  • Yeah it's pretty expensive to go if I do I don't get any snacks that is what kills ya.

Couldn't imagine havin to bring a few lil mafks.
  • Yeah we bought a few snacks, but not much. We had just had Thanksgiving.
  • First one was pretty cute. Wish they kept more focused on the video game stuff instead of doing more generic internet humor and shoving in random disney cameos. Still want to check it out, but I'll prob wait for it to hit netflix.

$85? I hope you were drinking some crystal head vodka at the bar or something to ring up that tab.
  • My wife and I saw it. We enjoyed it - not quite as good as the first one but still lots of fun.
  • If that's the matinee, I'd hate to see the evening prices! D:

Sill, might go see it. Loved the first one.
  • Thought about this the first time I read the thread name but just got around to making it.

    Aww, nothing gets chocolate out.

  • Haven't seen it, not surprised it's not as good as the first one though. Sequels rarely are. But my stomach sank when I read $85 for a family of 4 to see a movie.. Not looking forward to taking my kid to the movies when he gets a little older. The $40 for my wife and I to go to a movie + snacks is already too much. Going to the movies is becoming more and more like a luxury thing and not something everyone does every weekend anymore. It sucks.
  • they have like a 5 night out this way, once a week in the evenings

but 85 dollar(s), is like a pinch in the pocket just for a movie ( along w the snacks )
  • $85 that is crazy but they sold tickets $18 here (in Canadian currency) a few years ago, and add popcorn at $8 for a bag (that is at least large enough to share between two people) and you got a hundred dollars after taxes.

This is 2018 I got a very large TV, a popcorn machine, coconut oil and Flavacol, so we wait until they're on Netflix or come out on DVD.

That being said, my wife still took the kids to Ralph 2 because she still likes going out.
  • Did not enjoy it at all. Story was a mess, and it just felt like a giant commercial for the big internet companies.
  • I'm still on the fence about watching it. I've heard mixed reviews, but I'm not entirely sure if I want to take the time out to see it if I'm going to be disappointed.
  • It was $10.40 for me to go but I went on Tuesday at 12:35. I like going mid-day during the week...avoid people but even so there was like 18 other people in the theater lol. Kids and families. Thankfully no screamers.

One d-bag did have his phone ring but he left soon afterwards...so it wasn't an issue.

The story was so-so. Of course the original is going to be better...but there was enough in the movie to make me laugh. I think it was worth the price of the ticket. I smuggled in candy and soda so I didn't have to pay out the ass for movie theater snacks and watered down soda.

There's only two issues I had with it...one the Princesses. Some of them barely got a sentence in the whole movie. Jasmin and Moana I think got the shaft here the most. Mulan didn't get a lot of talking in either. The second, bigger issue is the ending felt...flat? Anti-climatic. It just didn't feel right to me.

And while not an issue, I gotta say I think Disney actually put some semi-risky things in this movie given it's aimed at children. I mean Slaughter Race alone had me raising my eyebrows. And the Dark Web? I wouldn't have any qualms taking a kid to see it but I know there's parents out there that wouldn't want kids to see it for some of the stuff in it. And odd choice for Disney but good on them for trying new stuff.
  • Saw it now that it is out on video. Review time.

A step-down from the original. A heartfelt story with some humor, but with a rather bland internet focus.

The story of Ralph Breaks the Internet is actually really good. It is all character focused around Ralph and Van's relationship. Dealing with friend/family/significant other, moving away or growing and making a major life change can be very hard to deal with. It does a good job capturing that emotion and confusion. Gives the movie a lot of heart when it counts.

I remember in the original felt kind of magical with these video game characters and putting them in a "bad guy support group." Bringing kind of real world existential anxiety felt really fresh in a meta way.

In the new film, video game characters travel the internet. So you have fictional characters entering not the "real" world but "internet" world, which is one we are more familiar with since we all use the internet so much in our daily lives. The net world feels kind of mundane compared to the arcade. The characters bounce around and name drop different websites in a rather loose series of events making up this film's plot. Did we really need to see Ralph becoming a youtube star and making meme's?

Yes there is a Grand Theft Auto and Dark Web parody, but it isn't anything offensive. Actually if this were the Lego movie, they might have done something more clever or subversive when dealing with internet culture, but this is Disney so they play everything super safe. So why even go there if you don't have anything all that funny or insightful to say about the internet?

The scenes with the Princesses steal the show. I wouldn't be surprised if they have a Princess spin off already in the works.

This guy movies. Pretty much agree with everything above. Not sure about the playing it safe, give me an example of what you would've done instead and we can talk. I'd say a solid sequel, not Empire, but I liked it and left happy.
  • I watch the Emoji Movie about 4 times a day because it's my sons favorite cartoon.

If you told me that the two shows were in the same universe I wouldn't doubt you.
  • There's a first one? I didn't know this was a sequel to anything.
  • I finally got to watch it the other day, and I thought it was just as good as the first one. Just like the first one, nothing groundbreaking but very enjoyable, and has a good story and touches on a lot of pop culture references.

I've heard the name before but I don't know what that's about and I had no idea until now it was connected to this. I also don't have kids so if it's also a cartoon then it's unlikely I would have been exposed to it. I also don't have cable. I also only saw Ralph Breaks The Internet last week.
  • I saw it, it was very good. There have been a lot of Disney studio movies recently that I have been enjoying at least as much as Pixar, if not more. Just thinking of the last few years, I've enjoyed Moana, the original Wreck it Ralph and this one, and also Big Hero 6. I really enjoyed Co Co as well, a Pixar one, but other Pixar films recently haven't really done it for me. I wasn't big on Finding Dory or Incredibles 2, and I really didn't like the dinosaur one either. Inside Out was just OK. It may be that Disney animation is finally coming out on top for once, the first time since like 1995 or whatever!

Yeah some of Pixar's movies haven't been that great lately. Incredibles 2 was fine but nothing amazing. Coco was probably the best one they've done since Brave. But you should check out their Youtube channel. They make some good shorts.
