What "niche" or "vintage" media can YOU actually use?
Hey all it's ya boi Gloves poppin' atcha, lookin' for some feedack on ideas!
This is about the time of year when things start to quiet down with work, and so I find myself with the time needed to consider what fun stuff I might do for the next year's Extra Life fundraising.
Considering the success of the ShmupSpeed launch (thanks again for all the support!), it got me thinking - is there something else than an NES game I might release that could be fun? I'd LIKE to create something that I can still share with the world outside of my auction (likely the same format as this years), so I am trying to consider things like videos or games that I can share digitally, but still create a fun physical package for people to pick up. I'd like the physical package to be something you can use, like the NES CIBs we made for ShmupSpeed.
I have a couple ideas already, and am also open to any suggestions I might not have already thought of. Tell me what you would be interested in!
My ideas so far:
Those are my two example ideas for now, and the current main frontrunners. But hey maybe they're totally stupid, so please let me know they're fuckin' dumb before I go and learn how to program for DOS cuz I don't want you telling me this sucks next October. If not VHS/Floppy, what other media might you suggest? Trying to make it fun and unique as best I can!

My ideas so far:
- Video game on a floppy
- Do people have the ability to use floppy discs these days?
- I was thinking it might be fun to create a game that has similar limitations to the NES carts, in that the game would HAVE to fit on a floppy disc. Maybe a platformer would be simplest, or perhaps I could do something similar to Papers, Please.
- The game itself would be available online (perhaps for a nominal fee; ShmupSpeed currently is FREE online, and that site has started to cost me money now that people are actually visiting it).
- CIB copies would be made, in the same style as back in the day. I'd love if I could make like a "big box" style release for PC as a throwback.
- VHS Podcast
- Raise your hand if you have a VHS player!
- My thought here is I could get some notable personalities (perhaps an existing homebrew podcast?) to do a video, or short series of videos (3 x half hour episodes) and put it on a VHS.
- I'd have fun homebrew commercials styled like those of the 80's and 90's at the breaks.
- Cardboard case? Or big ol' plastic case like old Disney movies? (I imagine I can source plastic cases from ebay lots easily enough)

I remember reading old computer magazines and having to punch Basic code into my computer myself to make a program run. Release the game in magazine text format. So vintage!
Lmao that's certainly an interesting concept!
EDIT: I got it! Laser disk bro!
Better yet, shmupspeed on famicom disk system. Best of both worlds. Alternatively, somethin on a zip drive.
My plan is to have something new each year; otherwise I'll run out of things I can do with the single game!

you said no NES and I gave you no NES yet you get mad at me? Fine, I'll take my gold elsewhere. When you finally gonna eat that boxed copy of EVO? You promised like a month ago.
But yeah, you can easily get USB floppy drives and put some stuff on it no prob. Lots of these can be found today, despite some components and pieces being EOL.

That reminds me -- in high school, I initially had a TI-81 (?) graphing calculator. It was the blue one. The newer ones (TI-82, 83, 83+) had link cable jacks. This one did not. Thus, if I wanted to add a game (which was in a form of BASIC), I had to type in line-by-line. And you'd better believe I failed Chemistry for the first time because of this. Good times.
One thing you might want to try is a cassette tape. People still produce them, even big companies release cassette tapes still. Some 8-bit music on a cassette tape would be neat.

Oh I forgot about that. I had a TI 83 plus I used to program stick figure death animations on
Would love to see shmupspeed become a full fledged caravan STG with different arrange modes/chiptunes each fundraiser.... Failing that.. Gameboy?
I've certainly considered making new iterations on the theme. Shmups are my favorite genre, I basically play a shmup in some form every single day, and would love to make one. Lots of learning required on my part to make that a reality!
