Dropped a black permanent marker into my laundry

Today I opened up my laundry from the dryer to find to my horror, an uncapped black permanent marker somehow got inside and scribbled on just about everything in the dryer. The load had already been completely dried when I discovered this. I tried to pour rubbing alcohol on all of it and scrub it out, but it doesn't really seem to be working like I heard it would. Anyone know of any other last ditch efforts to get permanent marker out, or do you think I'm screwed?

  • Acetone/nail polish remover could also work. Once the clothes are dried, it usually takes a lot more elbow grease to get it out, or at least fade it to where it isn't as noticeable.
  • Usually the dryer sets in stains too, if the clothes are damp/wet it's a lot easier to get out.
  • Try hand sanitizer. If it's set in it's going to take a lot of work to get it out.
  • So far I've tried washing and soaking in rubbing alcohol, milk, lemon juice, oxyclean stain remover....most of it has seemed to have very little effect. One of my items is a white hoodie so I'm hopeful that it can be bleached, but I don't have my expectations up...pretty sad I had a pair of authentic Boston Celtics shorts in there....

The only bright side is I work in a dye shop so I can always dye the cotton stuff black or dark blue, unfortunately most of this stuff has black print on it and everything is threaded with polyester thread which my dyes won't work on.

I guess the lesson here is....permanent markers should not be in your laundry?

lol....it was actually in my pocket of what I was currently wearing while I was doing the laundry. When I transferred from the washer to dryer, the marker fell out of my pocket into the dryer without me seeing it. Just bad luck.

  • Im still trying to figure out how you havent paid them off. Did you take out a small loan for them, or did you buy them on a credit card?

Yeah few things I picked up in the last few weeks on a credit card last trip to the mall, only worn a few of these items once or twice

Interesting, I just never thought of items bought on credit as "not Paid off".  You might be out of luck about the sharpie though, that sucks.  I did it with a red ink pen one time, and now I check every single pocket before I put stuff in the wash.
  • There's fashion trends revolving around distressed jeans and torn leggings. Start the trend of marker damaged apparel.

Not talking a card linked ot my bank account, lots of clothing stores have store credit cards and you pay off your account $25-40 a month. I have a JCPenney one too.

  • Those clothes are dead to you.

    Sorry for your loss.

    It's frustrating.

A pen exploded in a new(ish) pair of jeans that I had on not too long ago. It stings.

Big 'ol pen spot on them... never get it out.
  • Yep, even bleach isn't touching it!

But like I said, I do work in a dye shop so I'll be able to turn the cotton items black

I just took it as saying the clothes were so new, the bill for the credit card hadn't even arrived yet.  I think that's all he was saying.

    What are “authentic” Celtic shorts?

I'm talking the $80 pairs from NBA Store, not the "cheap" $40 or less styles
  • Maybe try with an ultrasonic cleaner if you have access to one.
  • $80 for a pair of shorts

Not judging you! just shocked by the price. That's like nearly three LRG games   or one "collector's edition"...
  • Make a tie dye set
  • I left a red ink pen in a pocket of khakis.

I did that milk trick. Diluted the stain by about 50 percent. Only 1 pair of pants were effected . Took them to my moms house and said here you go work a miracle. By god she did it. Took 10 cleaning cycles but it worked. She scrubbed and worked hard on them. Took forever
  • tide to go pens are good.
  • Time to dye it all black. Black looks good on everyone so you did yourself a favor

Damn, there might actually be something to that "If you don't succeed, try-try again" slogan...I let them just sit in their own dampness overnight, and then this morning I am going at a grey cotton shirt with Oxi-Clean and scrapping my fingernail agressively over the spots, then rubbing it down with my thumb, and I'm actually getting a much better reaction than yesterday. I've almost completely fixed this one. I'll definitely keep on trying to repeat the process over the next few days before I settle for dyeing anything.

My one gripe with this that I mentioned earlier, is most clothing is made with polyester threading, so if I dye it black the threading is still going to be the same color as it was, sometimes this looks fine, but sometimes it looks pretty stupid after you're done dyeing it.

Depending on where the clothes were bought, you can return them no questions asked. Kohl's does this all the time.

I actually did meet Dino Radja earlier this year while wearing the shorts but I didn't get a picture, only an autograph

Edit: lol. Nope 40th 2nd round. Dude is in the Hof?!

  • my son left a bottle of fake blood in his pocket, that made it into the dryer. When I opened the door, it looked like a scene from a horror movie. Luckily, another cycle through the wash took care of it.
