POLL: If physical media ends, are you going to stop playing new gen systems?

I could see the Switch lasting another 6 years or so with an upgraded "Pro" version to bridge the lifespan to a full 8 years..

X Box and Playstation already have their own "Pro" models that have already extended their current gen console. The lifespan of these systems is coming to a close. So with the next Playstation and XBox(if there is one), do you think they will still offer physical games that you can buy or will it be download only?

If Playstation and XBox go digital only, Nintendo will probably follow the trend after they are done with Switch..

If that is the future of gaming, will you continue to play games into the next digital only generation, or is this the last generation you are going to buy into?

  • Yes, why wouldn't I? I buy new games to play and never sell them after beating. A digital game doesn't change anything for me.
  • It would be the end of new generation gaming for me. I find myself collecting more than playing and if the only way to play my games is downloading first I may as well buy a computer to play the games instead. It'll be a sad day when physical media dies
  • I play most new games on Steam, so I already do.

I think Nintendo's first party games will be physical for a little while.

What I mean to say is what if Nintendo’s next console (post-Switch) doesn’t even have a cartridge slot to put games into?

  • How about game developers release a fully functional game with no glitches. Tired if this 10 maps on a game then needing DLC for more. Sadly, I would still continue to buy games as I buy them digitally for non Nintendo systems already.
  • Digital won't stop me from playing games. It may change where I buy them though. I really like steam for digital since I can build a new PC and all the games are available for download. This includes games I bought 10+ years ago. Tough to say the same for Wii etc.
  • Already started for the most part, when a Steam tape goes on sale it just can't be beat.

The only physical media I am buying is Skrinch tapes and I'm just selling them once I'm done with em.
  • I think i'd welcome it at this point so i'd not feel compelled to collect lol.
  • If consoles go digital only, I'm done with them. I already own a PC for gaming and even if I purchase titles for it as digital only, 90% of the time I at least get a DRM free copy that I can keep backed up somewhere in case the system has something go awry. The major console players have already showed us exactly how unwilling they are to keep their online stores, networks, etc. online for the long run and made it nigh unto impossible to back up and/or reload without some sort of hacking/jailbreaking involved, so I'll go with the option that doesn't prevent me from actually having some sort of permanent copy of what I paid for.

I hear ya on that. I am kinda hoping next gen is digital only so that Switch is the last system I have to collect for!

  • I'll be out. Ive never been interested in digital only anything. Ive never bought digital music/subscriptions or purchased a digital movie. So far Ive only ever purchased 1 game on steam and i even regret that. I dont play online with others so that doesnt tempt me in the least. When it goes digital only i'll have no problem sticking with what i already have
  • I buy all digital for new games, wouldn't matter to me
  • I buy new games digital on PC for the most part. I got Hitman 2 on PC for instance, because that's simply where I'd rather play it. I'd MUCH prefer playing the digital copy on PC than owning a copy on PS4/XBOne and having to play on those.

Right now my order of preference for modern games is simple:

Switch Physical > PC Digital > PS4 Physical > Other
  • I could go off on a tangent about PC gaming, but I'll keep that to myself. If there's a **console** platform that goes digital only, screw it. Yeah, the main purpose of these things is to get entertainment out of them, but where's your money going into? You have absolutely nothing of worth to prove that your money went into something. Sure in a few years all hardware decreases drastically in price (especially for PC, lol), but at least you'd have something to physically validate a purchase. Also we're all collectors so something that doesn't have, ahem, anything physical to collect is kinda pointless.

Completely unrelated, I just want to laugh at the complete and utter scam that was Fallout 76. Talk about physical copies, yeah. I bet owners of the Collector's Edition are absolutely *loving* that fuckin' cardboard disc in a DVD case. HA.
  • I guess I'm in the minority. I don't buy systems that have no physical option. I'm someone who doesn't get rid of consoles unless I'm well and fully turned off by it or just done for all time as I still have stuff from the late 70s and 80s still I use. I don't see the stuff from the last 15 years or so being viable in another 15 years beyond they're off the market if I wanted to use it again or find it again either. I'm not against digital, but I place very little monetary value in it because you're just borrowing it and I don't like paying $30 let alone $60 for what's basically a long term redbox rental. I rarely will pay more than $10 for a digital title that I can't make an option hard copy of it use later like the GoG locker system allows as do some non-DRM tied Steam games too. I think the most I've spent so far probably was the $16 early sales cut that FF15 Pocket Edition had when it came out on the Switch and I wasn't entirely comfortable with that but I knew that the company rarely cuts games let alone that much. I wouldn't quit gaming, but I'd just buy the cheap stuff, or play the freemium games that don't force you eventually to pay up where it's truly optional like the Nintendo iOS stuff.
  • I stopped already so nothing will change for me
  • Wait....I must have missed something..... there other consoles than the NES?!?!?!
  • I can honestly say I haven't had the urge to go back and play any Xbox, PS2, X360 or PS3 game since I moved on to the X1 and PS4. Or, if it was a game that I did want to play, it got remastered and was even better (thinking of Last of Us on PS4). So personally, the argument about not being able to play the game in the future is a moot one for me. Outside of childhood favorites, I never find myself wanting to revisit some disc based game years after it was released.

The same can be said about an infinite amount of entertainment. eg. going to a concert; seeing a movie in the theatre, watching a show on Broadway; et al. I view gaming the same way. I am getting entertainment value for my purchase, the physical copy is irrelevant. Regardless, gaming is still one of the cheapest forms of entertainment available, dollar to time anyway.

Nah, I'll argue on that. Moreso with concerts than movies, but you're paying more for the event, atmosphere, and experience than just the product itself. With concerts, hearing the music performed live is a completely different beast than just listening to a CD as no two performances are the same. Same goes with broadway.

For movies, eh, I guess you could say you're paying to see it on an emormous screen with an insane sound setup that very, very, _very_ few people have access to personally (if any of yall got a 4K and Atmos setup, hmu), vs a game, where no matter what, digital or physical, you're getting exactly the same thing in the end, one moreso than the other.

You pay for 3 hours of a concert, and I generally get 40+ hours out of new games I'm buying at $60. For download only games I'm happy with 8 to 10 hours of solid fun for $15 to $20. I don't care what the event is, $2 to $3 per hour of fun is good, regardless of whether I own anything or not.

This is the last generation I’ll buy if it goes all digital.  And if PC does the same I’m out.  It’s not worth it to be a sucker to the industry and never own another game again as you’ll only lease games for that full cost+monetization BS.

I’ll be fine, I got a F ton of games to keep me busy.

  • Already do digital on X1 thanks to game share.
  • I'd stop collecting for sure... and that in the end will hurt the companies. But hey it had to happen eventually and truth is better for the earth BRAH... lol
  • I buy mostly physical and always will.

Will still buy digital games but much less than I'm used to.

    Nope!
  • It depends on how good the games are.
  • Depends on if the store is still up when I get around to it. Signs point to yes, I will stop playing "new" gen consoles.
  • Physical media is close to pointless already with all the day one patches/online/DLC/required installs. It’s basically just a license check now. If I'm not playing consoles next gen it's because they didn't justify some other reason to exist.
  • I won't stop gaming but once consoles go all digital there is no longer any appeal to them - I'd just play everything on PC. The only games I play on PC are games I can't get anywhere else. It seems silly to those who don't care about physical media and who don't understand the appeal of it, but I still say to this day, it just feels better buying and playing a game I can put in and take out of my console, with a case that sits on my shelf.
