My 2018 NES MTPO Collection Quest

Well, since I decided to start collecting every single version and label variation (front & back) of Mike Tyson's Punch'Out!! I have had a crazy journey on my way to collecting 22 of the 23 identified variations.  I've had to do a lot of scrounging around every known retro gaming site around the globe, contact people through every means necessary (YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) to find the tough ones, and put up with a lot of scammers (I've always gotten my money back thanks to PayPal).

I've had to wheel and deal, buy some stuff I didn't really want, and pay more than I should have for many of them.  But I made some great connections all around the globe as a result.  There are some really helpful fellow collectors out there that I really appreciate taking the time to help.  One guy in Spain, especially.  I hope I can somehow repay them along the way.

I've even picked up a "All New? Punch-Out!!" cart/box, an "Intergallactic Power Punch [Punch-Out]" cart, a cart/box of the PlayChoice 10 arcade version of MTPO, and the actual game board from a PC10 cabinet on my road to collecting the set.  Also a PC10 MTPO-themed promotional mailer, a PC10 MTPO game cabinet topper, some MTPO throw pillows, a Japanese MTPO handbill, and more.

I've spent way too much money and have some things I didn't really want or need as a result, but 2018 sure was fun!  There's still more on my list.  Maybe the coffee table book that was never published, a cardboard MTPO life-sized promotional sign, and maybe even the Japanese gold famicom non-Tyson version.  We'll see.

Now to just get my hands on that Korean version!!

  • If you're happy about what you've got that's what matters! Pretty neat scope for your collecting
  • sounds like some great stories from along the way. how 'bout some pics?
  • We'd love to see some pics!
  • Pics or it didn't happen
  • Didn't even know there were that many variants!
  • Good luck on that.
  • I want to see that 5- screw!
  • I have a bunch of these variants also. Some with date on the back, some without. One with a CAN code on the front, one without any code.
  • Pics!! I love variant collecting for the NES!!

Just my 2 cents, but back label variants is a super difficult thing to collect as many backs have been swapped over the years. I was, for a long while, collecting copies of games with back label variants, but seeing how common back swapping was / is, decided not to pursue it.

Good luck on finding the missing items!
  • Here is the case holding all the MTPO games (minus one of the Canadian versions which has not yet been cleaned and the PC10 version cartridge/box which has not yet been delivered):

You may be right about the backs, but I really only noticed two different backs (one without Rev-A and one with) but with the same front on the US versions, so I found one of each.  I think they’re legitimately different, too, because the board went from PEEOROM-01 to PEEOROM-02.

were you comparing the manufacturering number (number punched into back label)? I was collecting variants of those, as well, for a long while until the back swapping became common practice in the hobby. Fun times.
  • By the way, although many sites list a UKV version of Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! I'm 99% certain there never was one. I know there was with the generic Punch-Out!! (the non-Tyson later version), but never a NES-PT-UKV cartridge, just the NES-PT-GBR. I had this suspicion along the way but had it confirmed on a couple British retro game sites.

No, I had never considered that.  Just the layout of the label and the Rev-A/non Rev-A.

  • I finally found and bought the Korean MTPO!
  • Awesome collection man! I have the full size MTPO cardboard standee, as well as the counter standee. I also have a MTPO trash can and all of the mini figurines, and I think I even have like a mini handheld MTPO pinball game.

Keep in mind, you are also missing the the holy grail of MTPO items, the 1988 employee Nintendo apreciation night signed boxing glove by Mike Tyson! Extremely rare and expensive as fuck!

If you're willing to collect from other Punch Out generations, there is a Little Mac signed glove from the Wii version. It was an amazon exclusive. As well as the Punch Out Heavyweight condender set. I have both of these, as they sold for $75 and $25 when they were available, but are much more now.

    Keep on going!

I am looking for those standees and, despite my having an alert set up on ebay for them, one just sold there before I was even notified.

The other stuff doesn't really interest me much to be honest.  Especially not the signed boxing gloves.  I've seen them and they really don't look that appealing.  They have no indication on them that they have anything to do with the game and are pretty plain looking.  And the prices are extremely ridiculous considering Tyson's autograph is on countless boxing gloves and can easily be gotten for $100 and almost always in better condition.  Kind of crazy they're thousands of dollars because they have a tiny generic "Nintendo" $1 engraved metal tag on them.  But then again, the tiniest things make collectibles worth 100X more, I know.  I just don't get it in that instance.

I guess in my mind I have the holy grail of MTPO items, the Korean version.  I don't think you could find 5 in the world if you looked for a year solid.  And the ones you do find you wouldn't get the owners to sell anyway.  I think they're much rarer than the 5-screw MTPO.
  • nice! yeah comboy shit is next level rare, even in South Korea.

just scrolled the thread, but you are aware, first release of mike tyson's punch-out is the white dot version - maybe you said this, but like i said, just glanced. nice collection!

Yep, I’ve got the white bullet points.  I have every label variant from every country/region.

Oh ok, I wasn't sure if you were aware of these items, so I figured I'd bring them to your attention.

I believe it was purchased by a fellow kiosk collector member.  It was in VERY good condition, and was a deal at $1,200, considering the last one sold for right around that price and was heavily worn.

I agree, that the 1988 Nintendo employee glove might not really count as a MTPO item, as it has nothing to do with the game.  But I would still LOVE to own one!  It is an item that was signed by Mike during his reign as champ, and right in his prime!  With that said, I would NEVER pay anywhere near the current asking prices.  $500 seems fair, but not much more.

Have you seen the little mac signed glove? I know it isn't a MTPO item, but it displays VERY well!  You could probably get one for a halfway decent price if you were willing to wait.

Dude, your collection of MTPO items is one of the best I've ever seen.  Good luck getting the standees and the rest of the items you want, in time I'm sure you will!

  • Mike Tyson seems to do a decent number of signing events and I've seen several pictures of him signing NES carts. I think you need to get at least once cart signed!.

Yeah, I definitely want to do that someday.
  • Regarding getting a game autographed, I would like to actually get that done myself and not buy one already signed.  But I might cave on that.

I have a question, who signed those Little Mac gloves?  The signature reads, "Little Mac".  How does someone signing a fictional character's name on an item add to its value?

Who freaking knows LOL! And the autograph on the Little Mac glove is obviously worth nothing, but it's a very nice piece, and displays really well.  I also don't think Amazon made a ton of them, as they don't come up on Ebay very often.
