Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! with Famicom Converter?

OK, I have an almost completed collection of NES MTPO game versions/variants and was starting to collect the versions of NES games with Famicom converters in them when I noticed people keep listing MTPO as one of the games with a converter in it.

How can that be?  All games with converters are 5-screw games and the 5-screw MTPO is extremely rare.  It all seems to stem from one person who said they saw one and sold it without any photos of it.

Does anyone know if this is real or not?  I just don't see how it could be.

  • I can't remember exactly anymore (though it's probably on NA somewhere) but I believe this has been confirmed to exist. Maybe NGD 10 years ago?

i think that's the only source for this, nobody has showed up with proof of one in hand. there were a few others on his list that nobody has or have been shown to almost definitely be wrong. i think the list is considered unreliable now.

  • If it exists, it's one of the rarest variants ever.

What is the latest reliably documented Famicom adapter NES game?
  • I suppose we're overdue to start an official thread, perhaps stickied, with proper photos documenting each game and variants.
  • I didn't think MTPO was a famicom game. NES only.

Had a gold non-Tyson version, too.

  • I really don't believe any USA version of Punch-Out!! had the Famicom adapter. It came out in USA first and the Japanese version had differences. All games I know of to ever include the adapter were bit-for-bit identical between Japan and USA. Even Gyromite says "Robot Gyro" on the title screen for all USA versions.

    Punch-Out!! has regional differences:

I have personally found adapters inside Pinball, Excitebike, and multiple copies of Gyromite. [edit] and Stack Up too

    We have Stack Up too.

  • Yeah, every Stack-Up will have a converter.

That article is comparing the Gold Punch Out (without Tyson) to Mike Tyson's Punch Out. The latter is the same rom in both Japan/USA, so it it's theoretically possible for a converter to be found.

Oh shit. I knew about the gold version but it doesn’t have Tyson in it right? I didn’t know about the other one though. Thanks.

The first Japanese release actually had unused Tyson graphics in the ROM, so it definitely came after the USA version.

Still, I don't expect converters to be used in titles after the NES first or second Christmas season. By then, the NES' manufacturing lines should have been up to the task.

I'll take Jason's word on it existing.
  • AFAIK the converters were only because the US was in short supply for xmas of 85 which is why instead of getting new chips, they made converters for the famicom games. Which is why you only see them for the 85 black box series. Every Stack Up, Duck Hunt, Hogans Alley, Pinball, Gyromite. Maybe a few more. I think it was ONLY for that xmas season. MTPO was released in Dec of 87.

Yeah. I've always believed the same. I would need to see photographic evidence to convince me otherwise.

Yeah, its just nonsense honestly.  Thats why all copies of Stack up say "ROBOT BLOCK" cuz that was its famicom name.  All those games are identical to their japanese counterparts, MTPO apparently isnt.

Speakin of Stacking Up, did your ship get an upgrade? Lookin a lil beefier than i remember. Got dat wing upgrade!
  • I've seen tons of Gyromite carts without the famicom converter, not really a great option if you're wanting a converter.

MTPO (J) is the same as MTPO (U) for prg-0 carts. punch out (U) w/ mr dream and punch out (j) the gold cart are where things differ.

I've heard that.  So why would famicom boards be needed in US games if the US games were first?  Nothing adds up as to why any MTPO would ever have had a converter.
  • Only reason I can imagine is if they over-produced for Japan's demand and had a lot of unsold Famicom boards.
