Cold enough for ya?

Anyone caught in this?

"Long-standing records are poised to fall as the polar vortex sends extremely cold air into midwestern and northeastern United States to end January.

States of emergency have been issued in Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan due to the extreme cold with many schools and businesses closing until the frigid air loosens its grip on the region later this week.

Minneapolis could break low temperature records originally set in the 1800s, and Chicago could challenge its all-time record low of minus 27 F, set on Jan. 20, 1985."

  • Supposed to be -12 F at my place tonight (Western Mass). Cold enough for me but I pity folks in the midwest... just going to be awake all night hoping my pipes don't freeze.
  • Says the guy from Cali lol! its gotta be 68-70 down there. Been a solid 65 up here on the coast.
  • Yep...twas a bit chilly today. My state declared a state of emergency...

I normally would be jealous but considering half your state went up in flames... all my California envy vanished.
Now if anyone here is from Hawaii
  • I loved the -50 windchill this morning!
  • Can't wait to get out ice fishing again.
  • It's getting there.

Not quite half, more like 1%. But hawaii has earthquakes too!
  • We only hit -2 with 2 inchs of snow down here. So not too bad. It almost makes me miss SoCal.

I’m here in Florida and 38 degrees wtf?! Lol

  • They cancelled classes today because of the -40°F windchill today. I went out because tacos and boy was it cold.
  • 16 is the lowest it has ever been here, in 1949
  • Its currently -2 here. Practically skinny dipping weather compared to the midwest but I'll take -2 plus windchill over hot and humid any day.

Side note anyone else cringe when they read "polar vortex"? It always gets to me when weather reports try to sound "cool" with their naming schemes.

  • They have 30min before frostbite sets in.

If they do, they deserved it..?
  • Here I am.

Usually I ride my bike to work (down to 10 degrees, maybe 8 ). Everybody was asking if I did it today. No, lol, somebody picked me up.

It's a real technical term. We laymen just haven't heard it until about five years ago, because this kind of thing used to stay at, you know, the poles.

  • Meanwhile we had 35.9C (97F for imperial degenerates) here, the highest temperature registered for the city in 22 years.

Give me my winter back, pretty pretty please with sugar on top.

I am not made for this kind of excessively high temperatures.

Yeah, that isn't some weather-channel-marketing term.

It is a genuine name for a physical phenomenon at each pole.

It is always present, but when it gets unstable, it wobbles and expands in a way that sweeps down and drives a bunch of really cold air to places that don't usually experience it to that extent.

Yep the midwest is getting slammed, it's straight stupid cold.  Schools have been closed most days for going on 2 weeks now, it's ridiculous.

This morning my car still said -20 degrees and it's slowly warming up today from yesterday!  Yep that is wind chills of -40+ insane.

Mix this with snow every couple of days, fucking winter decided it wanted to "catch up" for the year after a slow start lol.

And for the fella saying it takes 30 minutes for frostbite in this weather...I'm 99% sure it happens quicker than that in this weather.

Yeah... maybe 30 minutes to lose entire fingers and toes, but you can get frostbite on your ears in a matter of minutes at those temperatures.

Those temperatures are cold enough that you can damage your lungs by taking a deep breath.

  • Another awesome day in the neighborhood.

    Nice display bud!
  • and people wonder why I love living in the South... I'll take my 100+ days in the summer, along with the humidity just to avoid being in sub zero temps..

F that mess... Y'all should consider moving the f**k away from that shit.
  • Just gotta wear layers and it's fine, if ya go out in -40 wind chills without a face mask yeah it's gonna be cold.

I could go outside and not even be cold in this.....face mask, tuque, glasses, 2 layers+ a winter coat, long pajamas on your legs along with your pants (snowpants if you got em) and you're laughin.

Unless you're just a bitch then no amount of clothes can help ya at that point.

LOL here in my city we got to about 35°F (2°C) and that's as cold as it gets, a year ago we had snow which is a rare thing, parents won't bring their kids to school if temperature is near 32°F (0°C), I imagine I'd inevitably freeze to death at -32°F. On the other hand we have temperatures over 100°F in the summer, it's not too bad as it seems, assuming you spend most of your day indoors.
