Sega Genesis cib game prices? Something seems off....??
Anyone else feel like pricechart cib prices for genesis are off? Over the last year or two genesis cib games have gone up universally about 25 percent on these price guide sites.. However when people on the seller section here or in local stores price them along pricechart lines they tend to sit and sit. There are games that will sell very quikly like castlevania bloodlines, splatterhouse 2/3, and another like 15 games but outside of that im not seeing games sell for the price chart averages. Games like streets of rage 2 cib priced at 40 thats been in bookmans (local used game store) for like two years (they list the day they where traded in). Thats just one example but it gets my point across..
I have a few buddies who work at local game stores and they tell me they rarely sell genesis games... I feel like demand is lower but the price is jumping on these price sites not just on the rare or sought after but on every game you can think of.. Whats the deal here? When i post cib games locally for 10-20% below price chart i rarely even get offers on them (stuff like alladin, nba jam, sonic 1 or 2 but even stuff like gunstar heros). It's just been a very weird market at least in my experince as of late. What do you guys think about the issue?

I think this isn't so much Genesis games being reported at higher prices than they're worth selling for, rather another sign of the local game store being a dying business model.
gloves- i know what your saying about retail being less popular. However if i sell snes or n64 games locally its super easy compared to genesis. That why im not sure why the genesis is popping up in value so much based on price charting.
It's like if you just post on NA every day trying to sell the same game with no bites on it. You're mostly just asking the same group everyday. Gotta diversify!
Another thing with genesis and Sega in general,
There are going to be less new collectors each year vs Nintendo. Nintendo still produce new consoles, and produce a lot more software and advertisements. There is a larger demographic of people using Nintendo products that can be influenced to spread out to their older consoles and games.
It's because Genesis is fuckin awesome and it can do whatever it wants, the people have no control over it.
It do what ninten do not.
Complete gems / popular games, especially the ones with pack ins (Gun Star Heroes fruit roll up, Punisher tattoo) have been fetching a premium. As far as local buyers idk, im not sure anyone can really have enough data from enough areas to give a solid answer. From my personal experience, there are a lot less games coming in the stores, on craigslist, let go, offer up, facebook marketplace etc. And the majority of the collectors I know just end up going ebay.

Pretty much this - I think Genesis collectors tend to be a little more particular. Things like registration cards can add a lot of value to a Genesis CIB, whereas most Nintendo collectors just focus on cart/box/manual and the occasional poster. It also most likely comes from the fact that most Genesis games are more likely to be CIB, thanks to hard shell cases.
The problem is, when the quality stuff sells, at potentially a premium, that means that everyone else holding a crap-copy of a game thinks they have a "gem" worth selling at a higher price. Basically, I think the market is transitioning. There once was a time where so long as the cart didn't have a name written on it in sharpie and the label was in decent shape (e.g. not torn or super-worn) all games went for the same general price, regardless. However, now that late-collectors are in the market, they are snatching up the good stuff, and leaving the junk.
I think this is also happening with SNES and earlier stuff too. I know I'm seeming to see it with Game Boy stuff, which is what I focus on. I have a list of about 75-80 games that I need. There are a lot of games setting at the $30-50 price range. There will be 1-3 copies of a game on eBay that just set at that price. Eventually, one more will pop up in actual great shape and the seller will sell it at that price (or maybe 10-20% more than the average list prices) and get it because they offer the first "mint" copy to show up in months, if not nearly a year.
Genesis and Game Boy are different and each collector community has it's nuances, but I imagine it's the same general dynamic. Adding all of the CIB contents, as others mentioned adds a whole additional dynamic. Those that know what they are looking for might gladly drop $100 for a 100% CIB game in gem mint shape that had additional items in the box, but would consider a "fair" copy that just has the case, manual and game for $30.
