Starting to question my complete FF collection
I love me some Final Fantasy, and for a long time have strived for a complete collection. I completed my goal last year and was quite happy with the accomplishment!
But lately I've been seeing more and more of these releases of games that I'd just be buying to have on the shelf so I can tell myself my collection is "complete". B
Basically my rule has been "one version of each named release per gen". So I have FFX on the PS2, but also the PS3 remaster. Not the PS4 remaster though, nor the Vita, because they're all the EXACT same thing, all released at the same time (same with the Xbox version). Frankly, I have thus far avoided the Xbox altogether (despite owning an XBOne). I have a pre-order placed for FFX on the Switch (and FFXII), but now I'm seeing that there's yet another release (re-release): World of FF Maxima on the XBOne.
So this not-so-great FF game made for kids is out now exclusively on the console I try to avoid (maybe coming to Switch too?), and I'm just like... I don't really wanna drop the money to buy it ya know? It's JUST gonna sit there.
I've been preeetty ok so far with owning a few games knowing I'll never play them (again) since they are part of my complete collection, and it's a warts-and-all affair. But now it's like... I could have a good 6 or 7 different versions of FFX (a game I never actually liked), and lord knows how many other re-releases of the games.
I think I have to rethink how I go about this particular collection. It's literally the only one I've put such significant effort into though; I literally have everything up until all this recent BS. I have the Chocobo Dungeons, the racing game on PS1, all the SNES and GBA games CIB, everything.
What are your guys' thoughts on this? Have you gone through something similar before, and if so what was the outcome? Did you keep going down the rabbit hole, or did you decide to maybe trim a bit?
I can't imagine the stress of going for full-sets lol.

Everything is an opportunity cost, and every game you buy is one other game you will never buy.
imo it's just how it is today.. they can't make decent games anymore so they remake them or they just tweak it a little with a lame story
this is not only happening with FF but i gotta admit you can't expect it to suddenly stop anytime soon
what about the future systems that will add up over the years
(i don't want to know)
hold on to it , someday you'll sleep on both ears
maybe
Hold that $20 up and ask yourself "would I rather spend the $20 on Maxima, or would I rather buy... that random boxed SFC game. Or that DS game. Or that Saturn game."

New sig coming soon
Don't keep up with the Joneses, keep up with your happiness.
I allocate a specific amount of money to go towards my collection, money that also is easily put towards other uses like doctors, medicine, and random purchases for wife/kids if they want something. Sometimes that amount is $0, sometimes it's a couple bucks, sometimes it's a tax refund check.
I never spend a penny above it unless something truly magnificent shows up in my watch lists. Stuff like Sachen/HES/Gluk/Brazil Games I don't have, others like mint and/or 100% CIB that I want...then there's cheap fan favorite sealed games.
Either way, budget is key to reducing collector fatigue.
Having a semi- complete FF collection is still a decent feat.
Get only what you honestly want to have, not other things just because they were published together. Like Zelda is my favorite series. But I don't have any interest in playing the Oracle games. So I don't need to have them.
Don't count and need to have are very definitive statements. As with any other "full set" I'm of the opinion everything counts. Each person can collect what they want though and if buying remakes to sit on your shelf doesn't appeal to you then don't do it.
See that's the thing, recently I've been considering going for the games I previously didn't count, such as all versions of games with multiple (e.g. the Xbox versions). And I was kind of actually even excited at the thought of trying to find those old games for reasonable prices and everything - the hunt part of it.
But then reading further I saw new versions that completely flew under my radar (specifically the new XBOne release of World of FF) and I honestly just saw that and thought "man I really don't wanna buy that".
It could be that I'm being too "must have it NOW" about it. Let's be real - the xbone version will be a tenner given a few months. The point of the thread though is just that - to get some thoughts from folks and see who I agree with. Some good varied responses so far and I really appreciate it.
Still thinking through where I'm at, but it'll be an interesting path either way for sure!
For example, I would guess that you don't have worldwide releases of every final fantasy game, all the imports, etc. I'd say the Japanese version of a Final Fantasy game is more interesting and unique/different from the US counterpart than a re-release. If you know you aren't going to play the re-release, and wouldn't play an import either because of a language barrier, I personally think the import is more "interesting" but who knows, that's just me.
My point being, you already aren't collecting EVERYTHING, so set the parameters that work for you. They don't have to fit in neat little boxes. What about variants? What about deluxe/limited/collector's edition releases of the same game? It almost never ends, so you gotta draw lines somewhere.
I'm collecting PS2 demos, but I'm mainly after US and Japan/Asia releases. Not too interested in PAL PS2 demos except for a very few instances. And for the US demos, I'm not collecting or care much about the coverdiscs/magazine demos. So my US PS2 demo collection will never actually be ALL the demos, even if I get everything I want. But....I don't really care and I'm really happy with where it's going.
Long story short - it seems you are already questioning the point of getting every re-release and remake/port out there, and it won't be ending any time soon. There's nothing wrong with that. Or, if you want your collection to literally be "the world's largest and most complete Final Fantasy collection" - then go that route, sure. But it doesn't seem like that's what you want.
I see so many people that try and collect things as they come out. Things they dont even want to play right away. So pointless. Just be patient. You dont have to have everything the second it comes out. If its a limited thing that you wouldnt be able to get later for any cheaper then sure yeah, but if its just a standard game release you dont need it man. Just wait.
Sadikyo has a killer point about the imports and all the other final fantasy merch out there - are you just collecting games, or actions figures, or other swag? That would end up being a life long financial commitment to strive for!
Plus we all know that FFIX was the most charming
just wait for a price drop. you dont have to have everything right away gloves.

What do you mean I could get 5 games for the price I paid for one if I just wait even though that game will sit on a shelf and not be played by that time anyway?
Start making sense, Jeff.
