Companies with highest # IPs?

Hey guys,

I've pondered this in the past so thought I'd just ask on NA. Does anyone know which companies have the highest # IPs? I assume Nintendo is #1, but then #2 etc.. would it be SEGA? Capcom? I'm genuinely curious.

Cheers.

  • Is this including publishers or just developers.
  • Probably somebody like Disney.

Good choice, especially since they bought Star Wars / Lucasarts.  Don't they own some Superhero stuff too?

Yes, they own Marvel for comic characeters (purchased before Star Wars / Lucas) -- as well as everything from Pixar.

Just from Marvel they almost certainly own more characters than any other company in existence.
  • There's no real way to quantify the number of IPs that a company owns. For example, Disney owns Marvel, which is IP. Marvel includes The Avengers, which is IP. The Avengers includes Iron Man, which is IP. Iron Man includes a plethora of supporting characters, each of which are IP - War Machine, Pepper, Jarvis, and tons of other that I am forgetting.

Let's assume, for simplicity's sake, that OP is referring to individual characters.

  • They also own the Jim Henson company. Aka every single muppet.

Let's not forget that they have Fox now...so family guy, Simpson's, etc.

They also own Saban, aka Power Rangers.

Disney is easily the king of IP. The mouse has his hands on everything that makes magic.
  • Sorry, I was tired when I wrote that post. I suppose I actually meant established video game franchises but with some leeway should a separate one involve a character as well. So Mario would be 1, but Mario Party, Tennis and Mario Kart would be others as well.

That doesn't mean Disney isn't #1 though, great choice.
  • If all the licensed properties are factored in, Disney is probably king. I bet no one else is even close.

If we're talking properties that started as video games, it's probably something like Namco.
  • Sheer ownership? Definitely Disney. Even if youre talking about # of IP's published to gaming platforms, it is still probably Disney. Back when I was working at Disney Interactive, we were the #1 Nintendo publisher by SKU because of the amount of titles we were publishing on the DS.
  • Yeah I think whatever way you want to cut it....Dinny
  • One day Disney will buy Nintendo and that would certainly end the discussion.

Think of how bad that would suck! Ugh and so possible-sounding.

  • If we were speaking only video games, its astounding how many companies and IPs EA has swallowed over many, many years and have done nothing with.
