Sales are down

I've been watching auctions end way lower than they should. I've got a few things for sale here and a couple on ebay and nothing. gixmaster noted the CIB caltron doing so poorly and the SE seemed to be a little low. I've and won stuff CIB for less than the NA price guide for cart only. Some by a lot.

What's the deal. I thought the economy was turning around.

  • sorry man, the economy is not turning around yet. Especially in the US where the spenders are.

US import purchases fell by $3.9 Billion last month, so when the largest economy in the world (maybe former) isn't buying anything, everyone will feel it. Just ask Japan, their exports decreased 45% in the same month.

  • yes, i noticed this last year and several people on other forums doubted me. overall prices are down, reflecting the recession. video games are pure discretionary purchases...i'm sure a lot of people here are finding other uses for the money at this moment.
  • Oh sure, the US buys everyones crap. Especially Canada's, but it seems like sales are sharply down even just in this last couple of weeks. Stuff is much lower than the price guide that was put out based on last months data ??? Seem out of place to me. Maybe I'm just watching the unlucky sellers auction their items away for nothing.
  • I just think more and more of the common stuff, or even semi-rare stuff is going to continue to not sell. The best of the best, though it may come down in price slightly, will still sell well.

    But who knows.

Americans (as the largest market) need to start spending money to help turn around this crisis, but their economy is in the shitter so it is much harder said than done.

I've been saying it since my join date as well, and I was just bullied around by the vets saying that I was talking out of my ass when I was the new kid on the block.

And the economy won't be turning around ANYTIME soon, you better believe that.
  • jone is right, it is gunna take a loooong time to fix this shit mess.

  • Ok well I wasn't trying to say it's turning around, I mean, I've heard both good and bad. It just seems that auctions are bombing right now. I just snagged a sealed (beat to death mind you) baby boomer from Dov for $15. The NA price guide says the cart alone goes for $30+.

Economy aside, I think sales are even lower than they should be.

  • in that case then, if you got extra cash sitting around, go buy some more shit on the cheap!

Well, remember too that people are probably factoring in Dov's shipping charges, which would put it up to the same price range.
  • ^ I agree with that

Sales are all over the place right now, but the majority is selling for us

Ya I suppose you're right. For you it's like $15. Even for me it's $10 but I'm so used to getting screwed on shipping living here that I feel like $10 is a good deal lol.
  • It may be a bit early but as the weather warms, video game sales in general drop this time of year. Schedules get busy with graduation and outdoor activities so playing video games inside gets put on hold. All I've seen is video game prices go up during this recession which has been surprising to me. Who knows if that'll continue but I think a general downturn is cyclical
  • ^ Good insight. Thanks, I never thought about the time of year.
  • Your correct on the slowing down for the summer. Usually from end of may to some time august and even later in some parts it slows. Sucks for people like myself , Ive been out of a job since last may and sell games online just to get by. Thats why im about to make the move to the chuckwagon because ebay is just milking me and every cent I make counts.
  • I haven't notice that on my ebay auctions, although i have seen many more European gamers winning my stuff.

My sales on "Mercado Libre" fell 30 - 40 % compared to the same month of the last year.

And i have purchased much less than last year image
  • I've noticed it. The stuff that I could sell for $6-8 doesn't even sell anymore. I quit listing items up for bid because some of them just end to cheap. If I can't get the BIN, I will just hold on to in unless I have an assload of a game. Anyone need mario 64? image
  • Smoking Joe The mario Games Sell really good on amazon as opposed to ebay

You generalist philosopherimage... What Tuxedocivic is talking about is not really related to the general economic crisis.

Bull eye, that's pretty much what I think about that. Summer, and cultural activities linked to that period slack the video gaming hype, price goes down, that's all. Last year? Same thing. Next year? Same thing.
  • Nes will run its course just as atari did. people were paying high amounts for atari stuff several years ago. waterworld, crazy climber etc would sell for hundreds loose, now they can be had for under 50 dollars. even the cib rare games have come way down in price. We can agree to disagree but nes will not sell high forever like some think the prices will start falling to the pre going crazy era.
  • ^ That being said.. you should sell me your black box games to me now while the prices are still un-godly! Please?

Do others think this. I've never given that any thought. I mean, it seems to me that NES had a bigger cultural impact. Every kid in the late 80s played this where as Atari, kids still new how to build forts in real trees and use their imaginations. Atari didn't have as big of a generational impact...
  • To me this is simply the time of year. It seems like every year around this time there is a post like this and people think the sky is falling. But as Sosafan said and I say every year there is an ebb and flow to NES sales. I can go back and track my sales for the last 3-4 years on excel and sales seem to start going up in October/November and spike in December (Christmas) and do well in January-March (tax return season) and then fall off the table in April and lag until October again. This happens EVERY YEAR like clockwork. I always just look at this time of year as the time to look for deals.
  • Atari and Nintendo are in far different leagues if you ask me.

Nintendo draws in new collectors/gamers everyday, and of all ages. As shown by the sheer number of people that join NA every single day... and thats just a portion of the NES community. Nintendo still produces systems, NES is iconic, and they have memorable charters that are still being thrown in games today. I really dont think prices are going to drop out on NES anyday soon. As far as I can tell things are climbing. I constantly see games on the bay going for considerable amounts more than 2 years ago.

really? that is very good to know, thanks
  • i also think that the really rare games such as nwc SE Myriad will not drop ever, they will either stay around the same, or go up, love this topic btw

That is correct.. I have Rare Atari and Intellivision games and they dont sell near as easy as
    Nes/Snes

  • This topic seems to come up ever few months.

I think I agree with Doug on this one. Eventually (a few years from now, a decade, who knows...) the guys like us that grew up with the system will have MANY other things to spend our money on. While, here at NAge, we see new blood all the time, I don't believe that younger people will enter the NES/SNES collecting scene with the same velocity with which they will leave (again at some vague point in the future).

Certainly, there will probably always be video game collectors...I just think that with each generation they're going to gravitate toward what they grew up with (if that generation gets enough traction as "collectors", at all).

I can't see any particular reason to believe contrary to what I'm posting, either. The "insane" NES/SNES prices correlate directly with a big influx of nostalgiac guys in their 20's/30's who finally have enough disposable income to buy what they couldn't buy as kids. Eventually they burn out and leave the hobby.

I know we have some life-long guys around here that aren't like that. But the "average collector" is how the prices for most things get set at auction. The hardcore collectors only influence the price on maybe a dozen items. Everything else is set by the masses. When the masses leave, it will be possible to buy everything at a seemingly large discount compared to today's market.
  • I would argue that things may only go higher in the next few years. There is a massive group that is around 17-26 that grew up on this stuff and are only beginning to get disposable income to become serious influential collectors. You see it on this site, those that are closer to 30 have more money and tend to have much larger/better collections. The largest concentration of the kids who grew up on this stuff are not that old yet.
  • Everything I've seen tells me that the economy is on the mend.  I agree, it's just seasonal fluctuations.
  • The seasonal thing is kinda funny... I buy MORE retro stuff from January through August or so because September through December is when most of the NEW releases come out I want to buy. I barely buy any retro stuff then.
