Neo Geo Pocket Color - Regional Console Variants?

Hello! I purchased a Neo Geo Pocket Color not too long ago and I absolutely love it. I have the blue camo model and I am unsure what region it is originally from. I understand that the systems are region-free, however, there does not seem to be much information available on what differences there are, if any, between regions on the system itself. Is the label the same on each, in English, with a CE mark and FCC notice in English, or are there known variations from region to region?

Thank you for your help, there does not seem to be a whole lot out there about this system!

  • A great resource is the Facebook group Neo geo for life as they're friendly and so helpful about SNK stuff. Various regions did get their own color choices and the rear sticker varies by Japan US and Europe. The internal setup is the same as it's multilingual. I own one but don't have it and n front of me right now. I moved more into Neo geo mvs in recent years and returned to ngpc too.
  • I will check that group out! Thank you for your help!
  • The US Released With Clear, Silver, Blue, Graphite/carbon fiber , Blue Camo, and some Dark Blue Textured one (I forgot their name for it)

Japan Has the Special Hension Tigers model, the Translucent Blue and Yellow Models.

The US had 32 Games "officially Released" 2 of those (Faselie, Last Blade) Do Not have boxes as they were put out only in blister Packs released much later after retailers sent in their recalled stock as SNK folded.

    The Big Hitters are:

(Eur)Neo Bacaratt, Dive Alert Becky, Faselei, Evolution, Cotton

(US) Magical Drop Pocket, Gals Fighters, Faselei, Puyo Pop

    (JP) Have No Clue

(JP) Games Were in Cardboard boxes a little larger than the US Version

    (US) Cardboard Boxes

    (EU) Plastic Clam Shell

One last thing of Special note, (JP) had Wireless Links Released compatible with Card Fighters Clash Versions. & There was a Sega DreamCast Link Cable that allowed you to transfer data between the 2 for 1 or 2 games.

Just remembered most argubally the rarest of the EU Games and had to add it

Wow, when did this go nuts?  I guess I'm sitting on a gold mine since I bought extra copies to go with my additional systems to be able to play head to head?

It's been a few years now for Magical Drop & Gals Fighters. As of recent Puyo Pop, and Metal Slug 2nd Mission seem to be gaining traction for the (US) Varients.
  • Japan I can name a few

Rockman Battle & FIghters, Nige ron pa, SNK vs Capcom Card Fighters 2, (their release of it too for) Gals Fighter, Big Bang Pro Wrestling (it's like Fire Pro, well done),

Also for the US: Add Crush Roller, Biomotor Unitron, Puyo Pop for sure too

I'm into SNK as I said, and I do have a nice box and all silver NGPC along with over 15 games, though only one is complete as the prices in more recent last few years have become just stupid due to collector influence. It's not my first, I had one back when it was on the market, and due to how the price on a few games went I ended up backing off wanting complete to just game and dust case and then to curb the spending picked up a flash kit from retrohq for it. There's just enough expensive titles and those that had EUR releases of JP stuff or playable JP stuff it totally is worth owning the kit. I honestly shamefully don't use the device much as it's kind of out of sight, out of mind, but when it is used it's a lot of fun. I just wish some stuff would get full translations like Ogre Battle, Bio Motor Unitron 2, and a few others. I mean if the Virtual Boy of all things can get its small Japan only library entirely converted into english why not this too?
  • Thank you all for your help! To piggyback on VmprHntrD's comment about full translations and the lack thereof, it is unfortunate that even the localizations that we do have tend to be sloppy. Card Fighters Clash is full of typos that make some cards very confusing without a FAQ or trial and error. Localization in MotM isn't nearly as bad, but leaves a few things to be desired.

All that aside though, as a kid raised on Game Boy, SNK really knocked it out of the park here. The sales disagree, but it's definitely an impressive machine.
  • I agree it's impressive, but SNK just bungled it badly and there's no other real argument on that outside of them eventually cratering with that whole Aruze pachinko hell mess period they went through too. It had anything the GBC could do and basically nicer in various ways, and really shouldn't have been threatened with death until the GBA arrived. They did little to nothing to court developers to get games and just tried scratching from their own back library instead which was an arrogant huge mistake. Had they taken the support they did get from Capcom, Namco, Taito, and Sega further who knows.
  • the NGPC was inevitably destined to fail from the time it was released, SNK was in financial Turmoil, There was no money put into marketing the console in the U.S., I only knew of it due to an advertisement i saw on an obscure site online. With no marketing, and very little 3rd party support going up against the likes of the Gameboy Advance just wasn't going to pan out as seen. I bought the system on release date I had to pre order it from Game Crazy and it was on a Hard release so I managed to buy a couple games before the console was officially released (A day prior anyways) I have slowly managed to collect all 32 games CIB over the years typically only paying between $20 ~ $35 for most, but several managed to get sealed for less than $20. The Most expensive Game i bought was Magical Drop Pocket Sealed for $80 but it has always been known to be the more difficult title to find for US Variants. I enjoyed the system for Card Fighters clash, Bio-Motor Unitron, Metal Slug, Dark Arms, and Sonic, but was utterly disappointing with Dive alert & Faselie.

Overall it was a cool little system that's always held a special place for me (Hence completing the collection over the years), I certainly wouldn't be paying the prices you see today for the carts but there is also the option of Ed's (Flash Masta) NGPC flash cart for playing the other games on the console, and with that you will have the ability to play Evolution: Eternal Dungeons & Cotton without paying more than a grand   It's also a great way to play Card Fighters Clash 2 with the English patch, and Rockman!
