Your Chance To Win!

How many contests have you seen where you get the chance to win the opportunity to buy something?

Just saw something in my news feed. The chance to own a limited edition Stephen Hawkins 50p coin. By own I mean buy after being sellected at random from a draw. The coin will cost £55 ($73). I haven't heard of this since the MGS 3DS. Have you heard of any?

  • This happens incredibly regularly (almost daily) in certain niche "artisan" groups. I follow some mechanical keyboard groups as well as artisan keycap groups and that's actually how MOST of them do business is via raffle - you sign up to be placed into a draw, and if your name is drawn you get to buy the keycap.

    e.g. /r/mechmarket on reddit; here's a recent one: https://www.reddit.com/r/mechmarket/comments/b2bpoi/artisan_mudwads_sham_rocks_and_giveaway/

Many (including the example above) are also what are called "blind bags", where you not only are entering for a chance to buy one, but you also don't even know which you are buying. Often there will be numerous colors available and you will get one picked at random.

There's a pretty big market for these, and they're quite collectable with many colorways only every being done once. Some keycaps can go for hundreds (or thousands!) of dollars.

Yes. For a single keycap for your keyboard.
  • Yeah, I've definitely seen this with smaller metalworking guys. Peter Atwood makes super popular multitools, everything he releases goes up randomly on his blog for 30 minutes and everyone gets into a drawing for a spot to buy one.

MAGFest does this with hotel rooms

I have around $500 worth; I'm considered incredibly casual in the hobby. I've also created a few of my own, as well as done repaints of some popular ones.

How many Linken Park albums do you have though?

Some of them look so nice in theory though. I mean they totally destroy the look of a keyboard as a whole, but they're fun to look at. Lots of people just put an ugly face as their escape key. I don't get that trend.

Those people who have to look when they type would just be totally screwed.

  • How is this a thing I've never heard of? Like a huge deal, and just I know nothing about it... I keep getting the feeling I've slipped into a new universe, where things are basically the same, but just different enough to kinda weird me out.

I know, right? I kinda pride myself on having at least a little knowledge on a broad range of topics, and until today, this wasn't even on my radar. I agree they are kind of cool looking, but not really a thing for me, I guess. Although, I'm hardly one to judge, I am a scientist who has dead things (and peices of dead things) in jars on his shelves at home.

There are plenty of video game themed keycaps to be had! I have these:

Ha! Okay, those I actually like a lot. So, what does your current keyboard look like then?

By the way, I like how these things have temporarily and unintentionally hijacked the thread.

Hah yeah; I think it's relevant.

I have a couple of keyboards, but here's my main setup at the moment (at home anyway):

You can't see it here but my ESC key has a tiny fidget spinner on it:
