POLL: Newsletters and such you don't care about. Do you throw them in spam or actually unsubscribe
If you've used email for even a couple months, the chances are that after you've started using it for signing up for various web accounts, you also started getting news letters, special offers and other marketing emails.
I hate 99% of these. Usually I just delete them but when a company bubbles up to be a "worst offender", sending an email out daily or weekly, it' time to fix the problem.
Typically, I personally open one of the emails and unsubscribe. I'd rather be removed from the list than let it go to spam, even though it doesn't really matter.
It's a dumb question, but what do you do? Not care and just train your spam filter, or actually unsubscribe?

Unsubscribing confirms to the spammer that they have a good email address and therefore often results in even more spam. Even with legit companies, they may stop sending you spam but your now-verified address will be included when they sell their maillists (or get breached).
That's interesting that you point that out. For a long time, this is why I deleted/sent to spam many of these emails. But, after a while, I decided there was no harm in seeing what happens. For accountability, many larger companies use third party newsletter tools (like Email Chimp, or whatever it's called) and those sites don't confirm that customers exist or not. They actually take care of the subs list and emails. So far, I've not had any spam issues after unsubscribing and I've been doing that for about 2-3 years.
But, yeah, back in 1998 on, I had agreed with your advice and this was the perspective I kept.
