  • Being passionate about collecting video games is the equivalent to being passionate about collecting TV show/movie DVDs/Blu-rays.

Isn't there a passionate collecting scene for that? I haven't put much thought into it, but you'd think there'd be a fairly big cinephile collecting scene out there.

This definitely needs to be an option, and would get my vote. I went into a fairly well-stocked retro game store here in Victoria BC yesterday, and walked out with nothing at all. Couldn't believe the whole store didn't have one game I wanted that I didn't already have.

Oh fuck yeah, I'd assume it dwarves video game collecting by a long shot.

Movies obviously just have a larger customer base though it could possibly change overtime.

You could be passionate about anything really, I know someone at work that is passionate about camel stuff (The animal) and has a room full of it.

I mean I'm a big fan of their toes and all, but I wouldn't start collecting over it.

  • More of a moose knuckle guy myself.
  • I'd say im a passionately confused hoarder addicted to being indifferent while obsessing over my fear of burnout.

Right now there's some MF out there looking for some obscure movie from the 90's on VHS and there's a hole in the collection on his shelf. What a weirdo

I'm interested in the camel thing.... they've got a bunch of camel merchandise and what not? A bunch of plushies? Just LOVE camels?

    Hey, whatever floats your boat.

I have 1,536 blu rays, good enough for 1,786th highest

  • Super passionate! However, do have some stuff I need to sell/get rid of mainly due to space, but most of my collection is all love! <3
  • My collecting manifests itself in a variety of ways that could/can be described as addiction, hoarding, passionate. I have taken things too far, overspent, sworn off and failed..........I am currently in a spot where I feel it is well controlled and my collecting direction is more focused and I have the self control to say no a lot today instead having multiple items inbound at once.............Ebay is a fucking drug I need to limit myself on for sure.
  • I'll go with barbie free confusion.

I gave up being a collector years ago when I couldn't justify the prices anymore. I just flip stuff if I still bother finding it and keeping a few things I'd care to keep so I don't take the hit. I do have hundreds of games but less than 500 and even that tends to bug me as it feels like a lot since I don't have a lot of play time anymore not being single and having a kid too. So when you figure being tired, and the rest, there's enough free time to really just dedicate to one system and casually poke for fun at other stuff, so that's what I do. My passion is kind of lost, but not really, just redirected. I'm no hoarder as it doesn't eat a heap of space up and it isn't some mess that attracts bugs and dead animals or their waste. Formerly addicted and formerly obsessed definitely. Maybe a partial burn out, that almost fits but I still care.
  • Definitely passionate now. I'm predominantly collecting different series as I play through the games. Right now Sonic, up to sixth gen for those, then once I finish all those onto gen seven.

Really fun way of collecting that reinvigorated my passion. Relatively inexpensive as well!

Dude, if you're attracting DEAD animals, you gotta be taking better care of your games! I'd suggest boiling your pin connector, cleaning with Q tips and alcohol, and NOT burying them in that old pet cemetery that was built on an ancient Indian burial ground!

Me?  Nah.  Got a few dead bugs that pop up now and again that are seasonal though.  Seriously I was thinking of the TV show Hoarders where you get these nut bags with a metric ton of garbage mixed in mostly formerly good stuff jammed into a small house with walking places around all the dead animals, a few hundred pounds of feces and the rest.  I'm sure we have a few here that probably do border on those tendencies with the collections and rationalizing behind it.
  • 2004: Die hard collector wanted anything and everything. completed NES set in 08, had probably 4000+ games and every system

2008: Got married and downsized collection

    2010: Had kids and downsized

2013: Had more kids and downsized

2015: Opened retro game/record store downsized some more

2017: New Home builtsold some more heavy hitters and got kitchen upgrades !

2019: Found a happy medium. Still own almost all systems with keeping only great games for each one. Neo Geo, Turbo Duo being my rarest systems. I find myself playing more of my games now since having less of them.

Lol must not have done that much downsizing.

  • When I first started out in the early 2000's I was obsessed. I couldn't pass a game store or garage sale without stopping, and suddenly this hobby that was supposed to be for fun in my spare time started taking up all of my time. That in turn started straining my relationships with my wife/kids, so I got out. Sold most everything except my Zelda stuff and stopped collecting hardcore. Some mild regrets now getting rid of everything of course but it was the right decision at the time. I still continued to collect Zelda stuff as a way of scratching that collecting itch and stay connected with the hobby, but since it was a more manageable amount it never felt like it was too much.

The last few years I've started branching back out but armed with the knowledge and perspective to not let it take up too much time/energy/money this time around.
  • probably a topic that has been rehashed on here 100 times by now.

anyway, seeing as how i can probably count on 2 hands how many games ive bought in the last year, I doubt Im obsessed

Oh I downsized to about 500 games and 12 consoles. That's pretty good tho from 4000 games and 50 systems lol. This was in the course of 15 years. However if you count store inventory then it's more then ever really lol
