Is the original Game Boy the G.O.A.T

  • The 3DS is the best handheld system for now. The switch might take over some day though. The 3DS is backwards compatible with the DS, (which has the best library of games), the 3DS has an amazing library, AND you have all the awesome eShop titles. And if you get a New 3DS you have even more options.

The Gameboy doesn't even come close.
  • I recently played through Super Mario Land on a Gameboy (Been a few years, maybe even 10? I play it on the Super Gameboy when I feel like it) and it was an incredible experience.

Nintendo wasn't joking around when they put the "Stereo Sound" in there. I used some good headphones and it melted my brain.

The characters kind of seemed 3D the way the pixels were separated from the beautiful yellow screen.

    It was fun as hell.

So... I guess I agree? I mean, functionally I use my SP if I want to go anywhere but I don't play handhelds much.
  • lol nobody cares about Lock n Chase.

Tetris is great, and is also available on almost every platform there is. Some very amazing versions. I'm hardpressed to come up with any other memorable puzzle games on Gameboy. GB Bust-a-move is terrible.

Dig Dug is better on Famicom, better still in the arcade.

I'm a fan of Zelda games, much less so when outside of Hyrule.

Wario is the cheapest type of bad guy.

I like Super Mario Land but it's so short.

Megaman sucks on Gameboy. So does TMNT.

Fall of the Foot Clan is good. The other two not so much.

And only the second Castlevania game is worth playing.

DK 94 is cool, but some of the levels wear out their welcome.

I actually like BurgerTime Deluxe better than most other versions. I think that's one where the GB version is worth playing.

  • Sooo I love Game Boy. I play the games unironically, and I'm thrilled when I find fun ones that I've never played anywhere else. I repair and modify the hardware. I fully agree that it's great to collect for. Huge GB guy. We could come up with a solid 50 games that are arguably must-plays, and 20 or so of those might be exclusive to Game Boy.

But I can't agree that it's the GOAT. I fully recognize that many of the games were ports of better, home console versions. (I still play them, of course.) I learned to play Klax on GB, played it all the way through, and loved it. Then I fired it up on Atari Lynx and had a way better experience. A little color goes a long way. Many of of us here on NA would agree (or SHOULD agree) that the NES is not the GOAT either, but it's the console of choice for many.

But it's great to see someone who loves it so much, because I feel like it's underrated. Not SUPER underrated, just... slightly underrated. And maybe this thread serves better as a "The GB is underrated" thread than a GOAT thread.

Side note, you say you completed Gauntlet II, do you mean you looped around to level 1??

I like it too, but compared to the Arcade Game it isn't much.

  • Tom Brady = G.O.A.T
  • This was definitely the pinnacle to me...

No, what I said is that you'd be hard pressed to find someone that has beat all 100 levels of it.

I'm still not understanding what the big deal with color is?

Color really doesn't make the game for me. In fact, it can be a negative in most cases. You can't tell me you prefer The legend of Zelda to links awakening, just because of the color.

And let's compare links awakening on gb to the new switch version, has that improved?

I love the black and white estetic and can appreciate the sprites a lot more.

To me it is more about the detail they put into the graphics.

As far as Klax is concerned, you picked the one game that depends on color as a crucial part of the gameplay element. lol, that was never going to end well.

So people use this site to inflate prices? Interesting.

Mega Man X on SNES is beautiful and the GB game could never compare. I feel like this is some troll or something. Am I on the show Punked right now?

Maybe it's already April fool's day where the thread's creator lives?

Okay, I admit you had me until here.  A troll well executed.  I tip my hat.

  • Jeremy Parish's YouTube series on the gameboy library is really good and is a fair look at the games I think. I haven't played one since the 90s so i'm not totally up to date, but as much as I love the memories, there are some real awkward and boring games on there. Plus the green screen...

That said I will be buying a blinged out modded gb in the future and look forward to some monochromatic action.

    cool, welcome aboard

  • Handhelds in general have always been sub-par consoles. The GB was a nice step up from Game&Watch type of displays though back when it was released but I still found the GBA to be a more impressive when it was released.

    SNES sux!
  • I genuinely marvel at a good troll thread. I don't understand how to straddle that line of absurd-yet-believable, and I agree with Brock--consider my hat tipped.

-- Ah yeah I totally misread that. Also I think there are 1000 levels. Insane, just like the NES version.

-- A game being in color can be a negative in most cases? I can't agree there.

-- Right on. Link's Awakening is a dope game, color or not. A Switch remake is a further testament to its greatness.

I love the black and white estetic and can appreciate the sprites a lot more.

--Sure. I like the GB sprites too, but it's not like they're better BECAUSE they don't have color. Some can be interesting in their use of the 4-color palette, but modern games don't all use monochrome sprites because they're better that way. Still, we totally agree that GB graphical limitations rarely get in the way of the gameplay. One exception is the screen resolution vs. the sprite resolution. To make Mario or Mega Man or Samus as detailed as they are, they have to make them relatively big compared to the screen, so the levels are more "zoomed-in" than their NES counterparts, which can make some games trickier. Though how many people would have brought it up if there wasn't a NES game to compare to? Hard to say.

As far as Klax is concerned, you picked the one game that depends on color as a crucial part of the gameplay element. lol, that was never going to end well.

--Naw man, color is a common gameplay element in lots of puzzle games. Breakthru!, Palamedes, and Gear Works are others that are easier to play on color-system versions. Especially Palamedes, that becomes a very different game when you have to rely so heavily on the numbers. But I'm glad those GB versions exist, I'd hate for a dev to decide against porting their game to GB just because of the monochrome. They all seemed to make it work ok in the games I've played.

A lot of Super Nintendo games have sprites that are too big and it really bugs me. Batman Returns, for instance.

Don't you dare speak ill of that game.

  • No. Decent handheld though.
  • If the GB was the best then the games wouldnt be cheap
  • I do have the say that I think the system, hand's down wins as the "best ever" in one category-- these things are tanks and for consoles can take a beating.
  • Best handheld is obviously the ngage.

    Or R-Zone. Or is that a head-held?
