Anybody Teach Themselves to Play the Piano/Keyboard?

Just like it sounds, anybody else take up the task of self-teaching themselves piano or the keyborard? What resources did you use, how was the journey, all of that... jazz? Because I need one more hobby and all  .

  • If you want to learn theory which I recommend doing then piano/keyboard is the easiest way to go about learning it, even guitar teachers will teach theory on keyboard.

Just start by learning all of the notes on the keyboard and then learn how to read your staffs and slowly be able to look at sheet music and learn that way.

The best advice I would give anyone learning an instrument is to just take your time and don't rush things, patience is the key and practice your ass off.
  • I took lessons when I was a kid, hated it, and quit after just a couple lessons. So I didn't really learn to play until I was in my twenties and I found a book of Ben Folds sheet music. Mellow stuff and crazier stuff. Way more fun than scales or whatever, and I practiced for 50 minutes a day during my lunch break for a whole summer. That one summer made a huge difference. I had already taken a music theory class and played other instruments, so I already knew how to read music, etc. Some people swear by flash cards for learning how to read music.

So I'd say... find music you really want to be able to play, keep practicing even if you don't feel like you're getting better, and keep looking at the music. I have a bad habit of playing something enough times that I just stop looking at the music, and I'm not getting better at sight-reading.
  • Use a metronome. No matter what
  • I taught myself to play guitar. Usually print out tabs and play along with the song. Twice a week for 1-2 years before I didn't suck.

For piano, lots of instruction videos on YouTube can help.
  • Miracle piano taught me to play Ode to Joy as a kid. One of the few I can play heh.

Edit: +1 on the theory bits mentioned above. Once you wrap your head around half steps vs whole steps and the circle of fifths things make much more sense. Not sure if you already read sheet music, but if not, Elvis's guitar broke down Friday+FACE.
  • I come from a musically oriented family. My youngest brother was a singer, my middle brother was a guitarist, and I chose the piano.

I never excelled at it, but I enjoyed it up until my teens and gave up when I realized I had no real world use for the skill and I only played it because my brothers were also into their own instruments.

I'm sure if I ever picked it up again I can play *something* but I doubt it would sound any good!
