Orlando Magic are NBA Southeast Division Champions with 41-40 record

They have one game to go and could end the season at .500, they are actually on a streak and could have won the title with a losing season!

This might be a sports record for worst division champions of all time

Under the old rules being "Division Champions" automatically made you a Top 3 spot in the Playoffs,

but they have since changed that rule to prevent a situation like this.

Orlando Magic - 41-40 (Currently 7th Place in East Playoffs, could rise to 6th or drop to 8th)

Charlotte Hornets - 39-42 (9th Place, Could rise to 8th)

Miami Heat - 39-42 (Out of Playoffs)

Washington Wizards - 32-50 (Out of Playoffs)

Atlanta Hawks - 29-52 (Out of Playoffs)

  • The Magic has always been my team so I'm glad to see them in the playoffs.. don't be surprised if they win their first round match up but beyond that I couldn't see them going to the finals or anything... Vucevic and Gordon are going to be going hard
  • Bucks 60 win mirage. Worst strength of schedule in the league. Playing the bottom 2/3rds of that conference 3-4 times each there is just no grind. You coast.

After bucks, toronto , philly. East is a joke
  • If I remember correctly the Seahawks were 7-9 and won their division maybe 10 years ago.

Haha this is exactly what I thought of!

Heh. "Look, we know that you are your division's 'champion', but the fact is you suck too much to get a top three spot."

  • I liked the Magic when they had Shaq and Penny. Not a fan of the Dwight Howard era. Been a rough road for their fans since then. Congrats on making it back!

Haha wow, this is the type of thing I was looking for. The Magic have been on a winning streak the last few games but there was definitely potential for a 40-42 division champ. I don't think it has ever happened in basketball, of course the last 15 years there are 6 divisions in the NBA instead of 4, so that increases the chances of something like this happening.

In 2005 the Celtics were the 3rd seed in the Playoffs, but had a worse record than the 4th & 5th seeds in the East. I think they changed the rules after that.

Cardinals made the Super Bowl at 7-9 or 8-8.  Probably should have won it too.

I know the rules were changed more recently than that. In 2007 Toronto finished 3rd in the East by winning the Atlantic Division and the Bulls who had a better record than the Raptors finished 5th. They ended up losing first round to the 6th place Nets.

Speaking of the Orlando Magic, they are playing Toronto in the playoffs in the 2-7 Match-Up!

  • You think that's something, how about the 2010 Seahawks who, with a 7-9 record, won the division, and thus got to HOST their first playoff game, and then did this...
