Notre Dame Cathedral

Just saw a news flash on this. Apparently it's a very large fire, and with no one knowing how it started.

  • I wonder if it's related to the renovations. I hope the damage isn't too extensive. My parents visited it years ago on their honeymoon and saw the "Crown of Thorns" displayed there (given the scale of forgery during the Middle Ages at the peak of people collecting Christian artifacts who knows if it was genuine).

Unfortunately, most of the reports are saying it's pretty damn bad. Like, nothing inside is left.

Man, the thing stood for over 800 years.

  • That's awful, I'm glad they evacuated the cathedral and hope no one was hurt.
  • This is awful. I heard it was related to the renovations that were taking place...
  • What an historical lost we're witnessing... it hurts to watch that fire consumes that giant piece of art. Was there about 5 years ago, and I can't compute that it will be probably lost forever. They're not even sure they'll be in measure to preserve the facade...
  • watched it for a bit when the news first broke got around to when the spire fell sucks watching 800+yrs of history go up in flames
  • Definitely a cultural tragedy.
  • They need to ask Quasimodo how the fire started.

I bet he has a hunch.

  • When I first saw the title I thought it was Notre Dame University! Either way this is really sad though
  • Well, it looks like the main stone structure survived. A lot of relics were either removed prior to the renovation, or were in a portion thought to be undamaged by the fire. Also, the spire that collapsed wasn't the original spire, but a replacement built sometime in the 19th century.
  • I heard it was from construction.

By chance the stone structure (especially the facade, which is just out of this world) is somewhat safe, cause in the afternoon, some officials weren't sure what could be saved. There was also a lot of efforts from the firemen to actually save the most significant artworks and relics that were inside, be it by the fire or the water thrown to stop it (the tricky part with these kind of fire).

But all the wood structure, which was still partially original from the 12th century, is definitely gone. That's still a sad day.
  • Can you imagine being the construction worker responsible for burning down priceless history? Geez...

If this is what happened, that person is not going to sleep well tonight, lol.

  • Burning down one of the most famous buildings in history? One that got a Disney movie? That would be awful, beyond words.

Hopefully it wasn't any one individual.

Those wood planks on the scaffolding didn't help either.

Oddly, something similar happened to the original St. Paul's cathedral in London. They were working on restoring it and had scaffolding erected. Then the Great London Fire swept through, the scaffolding caught fire, and anything that could burn did.

  • They'll probably blame it on an electrical fire, always do. Always blame the most handsome boys.
  • I mean it's interesting with historical buildings and all i understand it's shitty but i can't say i'm torn on a personal level you know

    These fools aint pre-twisting
  • damn electricians always burning down stuff
  • And this had to happen on Holy Week. At least it's only the roof and the spire that mainly got destroyed.
  • As bad as this is, it's no where near as bad as the National Museum fire in Brazil. Over 90% of the priceless items were destroyed.

The Cathedral and National Museum are all supposed to be common heritage to all. I think such museums and sites should receive as much money as necessary to keep them safe and sound.
