The Sonic Movie Trailer dropped

This movie is gonna be something, the trailer really solidifies the fact that I am not gonna like the movie just based on character design...

  • Good lord.
  • A movie for mouth breathers and people who need to wear a helmet.
  • Tried to quote the picture... oh well.

That Sonic pic = When the Grinch and a Smurf love each other very much
  • Ummmm

Might as well call it Ace Ventura 3 .
  • From those screenshots, of all of the horrible issues, the thing that jumps out immediately is "why does Sonic have human teeth?"...

He couldn't do that with hedgehog teeth?

  • Hahahahahahahaha

Based on the Live action Mario movie, Sega had REEEEAAAAAALLLLLLYYYYYYY low bar to beat.... And somehow I don't think they will with this.
  • As someone who's a Sonic fan, I'm obligated to go see it. lol (They messed up Sonic's design so badly)

I promised my little sister we'd go see it on her birthday. -_-

I kinda wanna see it to see Jim Carry play this version of Eggman as shown at the end of the trailer:

Live Action Mario had John Leguizamo and perpetually drunk Bob Hoskins, along with in-his-prime Dennis Hopper.

It was a bad movie, but it had a fun cast portraying the ridiculousness of it all.

(and it was all practical effects so some of the constuming and character design sins can be forgiven)

It also came out on the heels of multiple Nintendo cartoons dominating after school viewing to build the hype, in a time that kids WANTED a live action attempt at their video game heroes to exist.

Even for how awful it turned out, we can at least understand why it was given a green light.

But I don't understand why this movie would be made now.

Sonic doesn't have any significant current cultural relevance that I'm aware of, and even back in the day was playing second-class in terms of major brand mascot recognition.

  • How the hell do you guys expect a fuckin movie about a blue hedgehog who collects rings that moves at light speed be serious. It's supposed to be a fun movie and that's it.

This looks way more entertaining than all those goofy ass over the top serious MCU movies even though I'll probably still never watch it.
  • Power and the money, money and the power

Minute after minute, hour after hour

Everybody's running, but half of them ain't lookin

It's going on in the kitchen, but I don't know what's cookin

They say I gotta learn, but nobody's here to teach me

If they can't understand it, how can they reach me?

I'd expect (and hope) that it would be a ridiculous movie, since the fun would be in the absurdity.

But I would have hoped they had more competent character design work, because this portrayal of Sonic has too many elements that touch on uncanny valley, completely unecessarily, when they could have EASILY made all of his features more character-accurate and "cartoonier" (with a possible end result more akin to how animation and reality blend in Roger Rabbit)

  • Yea i mean its sonic...what kind of plot they could bring? The TV show pretty good was pretty good and my kids loved it. They also like sonic 2-3+Knuckles on Sega and play it every other week.

I would be taking them to see it for sure, my oldest 7 years old already asked me about that movie when he saw Sonic standee few months ago at movie theater. So, the memories with my kids and theirs with the dad is all I care about.
  • It looks bad, but not "Michael Bay ruins the Ninja Turtles" bad. My biggest concerns are the look of Sonic himself and that Jim Carrey only looks like Robotnik at the very end of the trailer, which is probably equated to like 5 minutes in the actual movie. Either way it's a pass for me.

The human features are an odd choice, who knows maybe a human got thrown into a boiling pot with a hedgehog, some blue, some rings and some stuff that moves really fast and that will be the origin story.

I was about to compare it to Roger Rabbit, or even Detective Pikachu which would be a better comparison. As weird as some of the Pokemon look, they did at least have a little more respect to the overall design.

Not ones made for humans. No.

I feel like this looks awful. But awful in the way that if I was sick and laying on the couch and it was on, I'd totally watch it to see how awful it is.

Not only that but hedgehog teeth look menacing as hell man.

Pretty cut and dry why they went with the human teeth.

You could dull down hedgehog teeth a bit to make them cartoonier without resorting to overlaying an actual human mouth and teeth.

The end result is fairly grotesque.

  • I really like the live action Mario movie.

I enjoyed it as a kid, but haven't rewatched since I saw it in the theater.

I'm sure it's every bit as bad as people claim, though I'm sure it would also be amusing to rewatch with my kids.

  • Well I didn't expect much, and this seems to meet those expectations.

I'm banking on this to be true, because I'm hoping that my kinds won't want to go see it.  Luckily, they just discovered Pokemon.
  • Incredible. From character design, to casting, to Gangsta's Paradise.
  • This looks like a dumpster fire. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. Probably still gonna make a ton of money if it has a good marketing budget.
  • Why Gangstas Paradise?!
  • ...wow...

yeah I'm passing until its on Netflix or some shit...
  • This looks fun. I'll definitely go see it. the trick is, like anything else of this nature, to go in with no/low expectations.
