  • I would have gotten into GBA more, it is one of my favorite systems, but the amount of bootlegs turned me off and I focused elsewhere instead.

The bootlegs are a huge issue. You can usually spot them pretty easily by looking for the double digit or letter imprint on the front label of the game cart. The DS also has quite a few bootlegs. They're inevitable unfortunately but once you know what to look for, it's not too hard to spot them quickly, and move on to the next listing to see if it's legit.

I honestly don't run into a lot of bootlegs. I do see them more on certain games. I was looking at Metal Slug recently and the entire page was full of nothing but bootleg versions of the game. You can usually spot them on ebay by price, quanity, the color of the labels, the curve on the edge of the top of the sticker being a lot larger, even the cart itself. There are a lot of ways to spot them, and if you get them home you can always open the cart to see.

The fake boxes are much harder in my opinion though, some of them are damn good.

  • Neo Geo MVS   not that AES with its ridiculous prices.
  • SATURN! ...at least the JP side of it...
  • Well from me keeping an eye on things over the years, even if I've laid off much of it just because I don't care for what it costs me, I do see some stuff that hasn't been kicked in the teeth to badly. Handheld games in general, and really when they're game only they tend to in a big majority of the cases be just a few dollars up to their old MSRP from the day, sometimes a good many can still hit that range with a manual if not everything. Also and maybe due to the huge amount of it there is but it's interesting so much PS1 stuff falls into that same argument too. Sure there are some super popular games that'll ratchet up higher like some RPGs, Action RPGs, or platforming games on DS or PS1, older handhelds too which can get into the upper two into even the three figures range. But they're a minority thing, not something that's semi-more common being over the original price like many other things.

I see a lot on eBay but they seem easy to avoid for the most part. Buying complete made it easy to avoid bootlegs for a time, but the fake boxes are making it harder to rely on that, though I’ve been able to avoid the fakes largely so far. Definitely need to invest in a Tri-wing screwdriver and know how to spot fake boxes though just to be certain.

Perhaps never go Full Tiger?  There's always over a dozen years of handheld games and the Game.com to consider too.
