Cheetahmen 2 price implosion?

I keep hearing of the rarity and desire to hold Cheetahmen 2, and historical prices relfect that.

Mid 2018 it looks like the price on this cart implodes to nothingness.....what happened?

  • The game was never really finished or officially released, and it's really more like the worlds most common NES prototype/preview game. Despite what lists say, it's just not part of the "set" (that’s still not a perfect category either since it has boxes and cartridges and chips produced....it just never made it to shelves)

Further, the game was completed by Greg Pabich and released on Kickstarter. I have a theory that when things like these reach a certain point of mass appeal, they later tank in price. (see NES Classic, SNES Classic, etc. etc)

Also, people stopped caring for unlicensed a long time ago, and everything unlicensed has been on the decline. Myriad should have been a $10,000+ CIB by now if it kept up with Stadium Events but instead it stagnated and maybe has a tick up here and there. Keep in mind, Myriad is the most "popular" unlicensed Holy Grail. There are many unlicensed games rarer, but it's the rarest NTSC-USA release. (3in1 Super Gun, Virtually all Sachen games save for a few commons, HES/Australian Vindicators, Magexa 2 Pack, etc)

Lastly, super rare items are hard to gauge a "going rate" on. They trade hands behind the scenes more often or at the very least just as often as eBay listings. For example,. If I wanted the rarest unlicensed games I know who to PM to either make a direct offer, or who to ask where to find a lead...I'm sure I'm not the only one either.

Private deals are where the real money has always been in the hobby and it only makes sense that rare items don't get listed as much anymore.

Also what the above post says is the biggest factor. Mix in false positives drags the price down.

But, that's just a theory. A game collecting theory.
  • Thanks for the very thorough explanation!
  • The last loose cart that hit my Ebay saved searches (March 2019) sold within hours BIN for $2300. VGPC tracks it as $2099 for some reason. When a game sells so infrequently, the last sale is probably your best idea of what it would go for now, even a couple year old sales are probably useless. I think I deleted my Cheetahmen search now because the game is going for more than I'm willing to pay now, or at least I personally think it would not be the best place to drop 2 grand long term on a loose cart.

Pricecharting thinks a $70 repro is legit is what happened

I imagine someone screaming "Damn you Greg Pabich!" and shaking their fist...

  • Price charting still shows it as a 1600 dollar game, and their is a completed sell of 2300.

Is this an implosion? Im confused? I havent followed its pricing for awhile.

gamevalue now isnt perfect and it tends to be on the lower end of a sale range, but pricecharting blows. Always has.

I say thank you!   I think the Lost Levels is the first NES game I bought before I even re-bought an NES and got games for it. I just had to have it!
