Why is n64 stuff so cheap compared to nes/snes?

I've noticed most of your posts are about people and what they don't know, or you projecting your feeing onto topics that people have clearly answered. Is it so difficult to admit the n64 is pure shit?
  • I don't think you could find a legit Smash or MK64 in my town for the prices mentioned in this thread. Which tells me that the repros have affected market prices. N64 stuff is hot and moves rapidly. NES stuff sits for a while and people always want a lower price. The prices also seem to be higher for n64 games than SNES and nes. MK64 > Super MK. Super Mario 64 > Mario 3 or SMW. Pilot wings, Star Fox etc
  • Last time I checked prices was 3-4 months ago when I listed my set.  The prices were higher than I expected back then but looking just now at gamevalue prices have only gone up. The average game price is as high as it has ever been, I know that doesn’t tell the whole story but to say they’re down across the board is fairly inaccurate.
  • I think it's too primitive in move to 3D. Just like how Atari is too primitive in 2D gaming.

I also think that since NES and SNES had limited abilities in the type of sounds they could make, it forced composers to make very interesting/catchy sounding music using the sound chips they had. They truly had to engineer the sound. This made for a more memorable experience. With newer systems, there is more advanced sound capabilities, which you'd think is a good thing, but I feel that it allowed composers to become lazy and less creative with soundtracks and sound effects
  • I took a quick look.

It's no more different than any other system right now. Highly sought after games are rising slightly and the rest have been hovering.

    My opinion:

It's the same reason all other systems are suffering the same fate. The market is in a recession/correction. When the hobby got big the collectors just moved from console to console. NES-SNES-Genesis-Oh TG16 and Master System-PS1-N64....and so on. The market can't tank as long as people are still willing to buy games at higher prices. They'll just fall to a price you will pay. If Little Samson dropped to....say $400....everyone would buy the game and drive the price right back up. Even if you don't want the game...odds are you'd still buy it if not to flip. The interest is still there and collectors will always drive up CIB prices. If you wanted a good N64 collection you're looking at maybe around 40 games.

I don't know about you, but gaming(as a hobby) is still VERY cheap compared to most hobbies. It only gets out of control when you get out of control and decide you(general term) want everything.

When I first saw this thread I pulled up my collection on GVN and thought the same thing. The popular titles haven't raised alot but they have always been high: SM64, Smash, Mario Partys, Paper Mario. Conker was the only one I noticed that has dropped but it's still too high IMO. The Blockbuster exclusives are the ones that have risen exponentially because they are pretty much the only ones that can be stamped as "rare" even though they are not...but I would also argue many of the "rare" NES titles aren't rare either...
  • N64 had two developers anyone cares about, all of their games bountifully common CIB, and nothing really rare. There was no exercise equipment game like SE or MBRSR, there was no lost-then-found game like Cheetahmen II, they never sold a cart to the military like MACS, there were no mail order porno games, there were no unlicensed religious games, there's no competition carts. The 'rare' N64 stuff just isn't as rare, and the actual rare stuff like the test cart or NFRs average collectors can just dismiss because they're not part of their "set".

So in conclusion, it's mostly because N64 sucks.
  • I grew up on NES games, I've been working in my career for 15 years and it's easy for me to spend a few thousand dollars on any NES games I really want.

Kids that grew up on N64 are still fairly early in their careers and simply aren't financially stable enough to spend that much on something like a video game.

    Thank you

  • The early foray into 3D was awesome at the time, but not appealing nowadays to anyone who isn't into the nostalgia. Even sidescrollers had to have awesome 3D graphics for kids to want them.

I still like and play N64 games on purpose. I used to play MK/Starfox/Goldeneye/Smash/MP with my friends every day after high school, and those are some happy memories. I didn't have a Playstation in the late 90s, and looking at how bad it is now, I have no desire to dive into it. So I can't fault people for saying the N64 sucks; they probably feel the same way I do about the PS1.
  • Agreed. It's cuz n64 sucks.

  • once they make a retron or other 3rd party company console that can play n64 carts fully with 60fps, max textures and HD resolutions then we will see a big demand for n64 carts.
  • The N64-era nostalgia kids will have enough money to drop on video games just in time for someone like Analogue to make a commercial HD N64.
  • Everything aged poorly and nobody wants to look at a screen with n64 tapes playing. The library is pretty lousy for the most part but by the numbers nes and SNES have just as many trash titles. Like any console just stick to the AAA tapes and sell or toss the rest in a recycle bin, they're not worth your time.

I dunno, PS1 prices have started to skyricket and it was basically same time as N64.

N64’s library of good games is relatively small, though its good games are amazing.

Adding to this why would i play the n64 version of a game when the ps1/dream would just be a better option.

    The superior controller, obviously.

Please dont tell me you are saying the N64 controller is superior to the PS1! If so, mod priveleges revoked!

Please don't tell me you didn't detect the sarcasm here! If so, mod privileges revoked! XD

  • I think some of you guys put too much emphasis on nostalgia. My top 10 games for genesis and snes I only have 1 or 2 games for each system that I had or played when I was a kid.

I just think genesis, snes, and even nes have some of the best games of all time on the platform and that's why they are so popular. ( although genesis is the red greased step child of the bunch.)

There was also Ogre Battle, which is a tactical RPG.

But the Playstation's CD-ROM capability made most RPG makers flock to it since they could include long cinematic cutscenes.

  • As a person whose favorite console is the N64, and truly believes that almost 50% of the library is playable and at least decent, the thoughts in this thread make my heart hurt

PS1 is sky rocketing?  Time to dust off my PS1 shoe box.

    ^Ain't that the truth.

So yeah, solid points... the 64 did limit in terms of storage and cost, so inevitably, devs and publishers are gonna want to do the cheaper/less limiting route.

The N64 did have some good arcade ports, I'll give them that.
