Sry I know this is a tangent, but I've never played that series although I keep coming across the wii version. I don't play turn based games, but like action rpg's, do you think I might like this game?
The N64 and GameCube ones are very good and very popular. The Wii one, much less so. The 3DS one is flat-out hated. I've never played (or even heard anything about) the Wii U one. The battles are somewhat simplified from a traditional turn-based RPG. I'm not big on deep, long JRPGs but I loved Paper Mario. I think it's worth a try.

I also think so. My taste is similar. I don’t care for any other turn-based series. Paper Mario is good stuff. Note: I have only played TTYD (GC) and SPM (Wii). I really enjoyed both, except that SPM is way too wordy but it was still lots of fun overall.
As a person whose favorite console is the N64, and truly believes that almost 50% of the library is playable and at least decent, the thoughts in this thread make my heart hurt
Right there with ya, bud!
Let's get out of here, this is NOT a safe space for us, lol! Of course, you're welcome to come and crash the "can NA beat N64?" thread on gamer's gauntlet if you like, it's a totally cool place for N64 bros to hang out and kick it!
I don't think it's anything to do with the quality of the gameplay relative to other platforms. Rather, it's most likely due to N64 being less rare than the NES/SNES. A lot of people back in the 80s and early 90s never knew what "game collecting" was about and probably a lot of the game boxes weren't looked after very well, or some were simply chucked away. I think this mentality had gradually changed since the turn of the millennium (N64 games and beyond) as games collecting began to gain in popularity.
It's the fakes! In real life we have only had to lower the prices of good N64 games by 10% max if at all. Just another thing that is worth a different amount on the internet than real life. Since such a large portion of the big N64 games are Mario games it's understandable since the internet hates Mario but real life loves him. If a crummy-to-mid-level N64 game goes down in price we lower it since they sell poorly anyway and come in all the time. There were a lot of N64 games that people bought BITD just because they "thought it would be good" or they "wanted another N64 game" and those are the ones that flood stores at $6-10.
For all that was said I think the reality of it is mainly a mix of what Tulpa said, and well dominance too or lack there of. The first generation 3D game consoles have not aged well, select games better than others in that realm, but on the whole while 3D they're functionally about as pretty to most as 2600 games are to like the SNES and GBA or modern 2D mobile titles -- passable to downright ugly. They haven't aged well, were made for the CRT in its dying days of dominance, and they used the CRTs own design as way to enhance their games too lost to the LCDs and such since causing even uglier looks and glitches. If you throw a game like the old hot trilogy or better franchises of the 8bit era or your Squaresoft looking stuff of the 16bit system against the then and now, what do you get? Something you still see people pumped out now that's really hot and sells great, and even some of those very games get shoveled out still alone or in packages, sometimes with some touchups, but they still work all too well. You can't say that about the old stuff, the N64 at best got a partial revival with a few games converted to the DS as it has its 3D limitations too on a similar level but that's about it. THen if you figure the n64 had like around 300 games of which nearly 1/2 of them were sports if you include any form of racing (future or not) and wrestling titles in there too, the library was limited. You take down most the ports, unless something was nicer done like with Mega Man and Resident Evil 2 and it shrinks further.
In the end you don't add up more than a few dozen games really that would still be desirable if you could get over the look of the games of the time. I think that's why people don't care, and well why Nintendo themselves didn't even care to make an HD box for it either like the other two. Sony owned that era and largely helped Sega into the hardware grave too along with them shooting themselves enough times too. N64 hung in there with dozens of solid titles, but most were made/published by Nintendo and Rare followed by a few from Midway, Activision, Lucasarts, a selective bit from Konami, and little else.
N64 was the first console I truly explored the library of on my own as a kid and I have a lot of nostalgia for the games. Mario 64, Kirby, Paper Mario, and Mario Kart 64 are some of my favorites. But the moment I realized that N64 collecting wasn't really for me was the same moment I realized two things:
1. If they ever came out with an N64 Classic, it'd likely have every game I care about playing from the N64's library.
2. I already have all of those cartridges anyway.
Beyond that, look at the competitors. Nintendo had their 1st party titles on point, but the library of the PS1 is just more interesting. I'm having a blast collecting for PS1 and Saturn right now despite having grown up on N64.
i dont see how n64 games are cheap, so far i havent spent under 12 dollars for a single game and there are no shops near by with decent prices so maybe my view is a little skewed

I think in the context of full set collecting there are still a ton of cheap sports games, as the N64 was lousy with mediocre sports games no one plays anymore.
Yeah I mean if you are focusing on non-sports or super common games then $10-$25 is gonna be the range they are all in (some more rare are upwards of that of course). Once you start looking for the filler stuff you'll never play you should find plenty of games sub $8. I generally find them 2 for 1 at any used video game store. I'm going for a full N64 game set so I need those crappy games no one plays, luckily they are cheap.

Yeah I not surprised you are paying a premium then, the ones you had as a kid are the ones a lot of people had as kids and they carry a premium. Mario (Kart, Party, etc) games are the worst example, not rare, but expensive. Good luck finding those chilhood treasures though! They are neat to play again as an adult.

gotten a few but still missing some its a long work in progress, also trying to get all of the major zelda games not any rereleases
Part of why I like 8 and 16 bit systems is how easy it is to fire up a game for a half hour or something. There was a pretty severe lack of pure action/arcade on N64, at least based on my experience. I believe there are *no* sidescrolling/2D titles on N64, maybe one or two. A lot of the games use all the controller buttons, start with tutorials, etc. Obviously Smash is a counterexample and there are a few others but the whole N64 package is kind of mehtome, as someone who likes quick simple action/arcade stuff anyway

Even the "2D" games tend to have 3Dish graphics, like Yoshi's Story, Worms Armageddon and Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth. Let's face it, the console was pushing the 3D aspect HARD.
Well Yoshi's Story is actually a good 2D example (the SNES was trending in that direction with sidescrollers already). But what's really, sorely missing on N64 is the shmups and run-and-gun type stuff that PS1 had a lot of in addition to 3D.
Comments
While there are a couple of expensive titles, we are talking about a console that has maybe 3 RPGs on it...
But the only system of this era with a Mario RPG in it...
Am I right!? Am I right!?

jk. Maybe a time will come where even common games like Mario Kart 64 will be super sought after, but I doubt it.
