Meh. It's a point of reference. I actually dig his top games, it's not exactly the usual suspects that made it in and that's refreshing. It's cool that he went into this semi-blind and gave lesser ratings to games he personnally didn't feel were worth mastering. I can dig that. A steep learning curve can, and often should, and often will be a deterrent to one's enjoyment of a particular game.
I totally understand that, and totally respect someone having some "different" choices at the top, something I'm guilty of myself. But if you read all of his capsule reviews he writes off a lot of games pretty quickly.
...and I haven't played enough of the NES library to really have any insightful input. But I will say that I had tons of fun with stuff like Clu Clu Land, Mendel Palace, Spy Hunter, and lots of other games you never see on best of lists. And I like Koei games. So I suspect I'd think 200+ games were "good."
Depends on your taste and value, I sold some NES games that I bought back except for Swampthing and Pro Hockey since the price was too high for to buy.
I personally like the corniness of Color Dreams games like Silent Assault, Secret Storm, Baby Boomer and Menace Beach (I do like Crystal Mines unironically) and enjoy them having in my collection.
I started keeping track of my completions in 2013 since then I’ve finished 510 nes games. I can say that most of the time after beating a game it has grown on me and I’ve found some amount of enjoyment. For me though I can count on one hand the games that have blown my mind but there are a lot of other really well done games too. Overall I’d guess for the average person there’s probably 30-40 games worth owning.
I do count the black box games as worth owning, even while many may not be worth playing.
I am open to any genre, as long as the game is decent - although admittedly, traditional racing on NES not really (RC Pro Am is not 'traditional' imo) and with sports I only really care about 1-2 good games per sport.
I was looking at my shelves and I think there are a couple obvious ones to replace atm under that criteria. It's so neat because the NES was the 1st console that I played, but had moved on to the SNES (just due to my age), so I do not have nearly the experience with it. It and the Genesis are my 'hidden gems' consoles.

this guy played and reviewed all the NES games : https://questicle.net/
In terms of playability 10-15% of the library is probably where it's at.
I read that entire thing. He barely played most of the games, and his choices for the "best" of the library leave a lot to be desired

As far as rare stuff 1%,that 1% would have to be titles like Little Samson,DuckTales 2 ,Chip&Dale 2 ,,PowerBlade 2 ..
As far as showpieces worth owning I'd have to say NWC .I have no desire to own SE ,unless I find it in the wild ...

Guess someone should play through and rank the entire library so we know for sure
What a monstrously fun headache that would be.
