Hmmm I think my CIB bug is dieing. Help me think of Pros/cons of loose vs CIB

I wont let it die mainly because I put those shelves in my room if you guys remember so I really like the display...however I think for other systems like N64/snes I might go for a loose set. What would some pros and cons be.

To start off.

CIB

Pro:
Looks way nicer
Con:
Cost
Space
Harder to Track down.

Loose

Pro:
More space
Costs less
Cost of shipping is less
Easier to ship

Con:
Harder to make it look nice. (Unless your Sparky.)

  • Personnally, I love the look of a cart only collection a lot. Just a little picture of mine to prove my point image...

  • Hmmm thats pretty sexy... Although my current shelving is built for display. image But I think what I might do is go cib for nes and loose for everything else... Ugh...I dont know.
  • I would go cib on n64 those games suck to display

I work on cart only (of course keeping boxes along the way) I will start working on cib more once I finish cart only. If I buy a cib I will have the game to sell and if I see a nice lot of boxes or manuals I will have the carts already
  • SNES is hard to shelve nicely too. NES stacks ok cart only, but n64 and snes don't. I personally still think CIB nes looks way better and I love old nes box art.
  • Why not just collect boxes of games you like and "rare" games and keep the rest loose. That way you have a nice display and the cost stays low. I convinced myself to go cart only about 9 months ago and now I regret it and I am buying back boxes I already had. The CIB bug is strong once the boxes are gone !
  • I tried go CIB too but it cost way too much, depend if you have a good cash flow I guess... Just went back to carts only and only the ones I'll play.
  • I can't stand loose games. Absolutely can't stand them. I used to be a cart-only collector, now I don't even consider a cart-only game being part of my collection (unless its SE or Myriad image)

    Pros of CIB:

All the cool guys are doing it
  • Loose ----> generally going down in value

Complete ----> Not going down in value as fast

    image
  • Yea...I think for now I will stay cib as far as NES goes and for snes I will just take them as they come but I wont go out of my way to look for cib. N64 I will probobly just stick with what I have right now my collection is about %20 cib for N64. For Snes its about %10 and for nes its about %95
  • I say go CIB or go home, simply because any new game that I buy to play (like for my 360 or DS) is always CIB. I keep the rest of my collection CIB too just to be consistent, even though I'm going to scale back a lot after the summer passes.
  • CIB does not display as nice as loose IMHO, unless it's super mint, and super mint stuff costs a lot of $. Not to mention it's hard to track sometimes. Paper boxes are fragile, most of mass cib collectors own games in poor condition, they look poorly at display IMHO.

Sealed is much better but it's different cash category.

If you plan to collect ALL games - go for loose. It will be faster and look cool.
  • Ilike the look of loose games better than CIB. To me, I have a few CIB games and hate it when I wan to play one of them. You have to be super carful with the box and all that jazz. You can't just grab and go.

    You must be the exception!...

That's why you keep your boxes and carts separate!
  • probally the big difference is how you look at collecting. Its more of a challenge to go CIB. cart only not so much. so i guess it depends if you one of those people that feel the need for a instant collection right now or one that doesnt mind working on a collection for years.

example im working on my cib snes collection. I could throw my money away and overpay in ebay stores to finish, but im good with waiting til i can find a good deal on a auction or find something in the wild. as far as cart only if you really look you can probally find most stuff in the wild and in large lots on ebay.
  • I love the shelves....if I had though I'd be all about just carts.

LOL he's got ya there Will!

No point in talking down other people's collections (be they loose or whatever) because there is always someone with a better collection or more money.   Guys who collect $10m picassos I'm sure think Myriads, SEs, and nwcs are lame collectibles for poor people!

I absolutely agree... except honestly a CIB collection, funds permitting, minus SE and myriad could be done in six months.   It doesn't have to be a long drawn out challenge, although it could be, depending on funds / aggressiveness in buying.
  • Dude, just do one of each. Then you don't have to worry. image

EDIT:  That way, when you get two of some boxes because you can't find a loose f---ing cart, your rares shelf looks awesome.

Wow, just wow. I think I threw up a little just now. I think people that collect sealed are simply people that collect sealed. No offense, but I don't think I know any "elite" NES collectors.

Thats what makes it so sweet. Elite NES collectors, lol.

It sounds even better if you say it out loud.

    "Pros of CIB:

This is just as hilarious. Cool NES collectors. lol

  • I say go with your gut.  I personally am going CIB, but that's just because am a little OCD about it.  I'm also only collecting games I plan to play, so I can never collect sealed even though in my opinion it's the best looking when displayed correctly.  This is all just my opinion.  As too the whole elite NES collector:

I can't stand non-NA collecters.  Absolutely can't stand them.  I used to be a non-NA collecter, now I don't even consider a non-NA collecter being a collecter (unless they are richer then me and want to give me SE, Myriad, Final Fight Guy, or Chrono Trigger)

    Pros of NA collector:
All the elite guys are doing it

(by the way the above paragraph is all to be taken sarcastically)
  • well I have been bothered by this to from time to time and I started loose and went CIB... here is what I came to..

CIB - Hold everything together, manual, maps, game etc.. For example some games like Dragon Warrior it would be nice to have the map.

Sure a loose collection looks nice, but by itself. Collect for all systems like me and then NES loose next to SNES loose, next to N64 loose looks really ugly and annoying.

Everything complete looks nice next to each other, for example you can have NES games complete then have SNES games complete right next to them and they will look allright.

The major benefit I have found for loose games is obviously the price. But I figure I collect only the games I think are worth playing (200 for the NES) and out of those 200 maybe 50 of them are going to cost me 50+ for a complete copy so why not suck it up and just get it over with.

Plus I like the manuals and it looks weird and is hard to keep manuals and loose games together.. a box keeps them all nice and tight...
  • I have gone CIB on everything now, and I barely make over minimum wage. The key is.. I dont just buy every game, and try to own everything. I just buy the games I will play, or games with good memories from my childhood. With NES I have a ton of CIBs. The thing is though, I dont go out looking to buy stuff. I just wait till I see something cheap I really want.
  • I collect as a hobby, and collecting boxes and manuals gives me something more to look for. I've slowed my pace a lot lately, because I've realized that once I finish NES, I probably won't move on to another system. I'm going to savor the ride, and hopefully it'll make the moment I complete my set that much more (bitter)sweet.
