Toughts on your collections
Ive been having toughts about selling my collection recently and it looks that im not alone. I see more and more collections and sell-outs on ebay each week. Not just small collections but huge ones as well. Maybe its due partly to the economy or something else. I wanted to ask everyone
1- How do you feel about your collection?
2- Have you tought about selling it or do you plan to soon?
3- For those of you who have sold out, what was the reason(s)?
Comments
2. Plan to after the summer.
3. It's going to be A) Loosing interest with the hobby and
2) I don't ever plan on doing it, any time soon at least.
^^^ I was thinking the same thing, doesn't seem like a huge sell of by any means.
I'm not gonna sell my collection anytime soon. Probably never will sell it ALL.

1. I like it quite a bit. I have every single NES game I could possibly want to play, and now I really want to try to get all the stinkers to complete the set.
2. No, at this point in my life I can't see myself ever selling it.
What's the metric you're using to evaluate this? Have you been monitoring this for some time? For the three years I've been using forums and shopping at eBay, there seems to be a steady stream of people selling, I don't think I've noticed any sort of big, alarming spike.
From ebay. Another 20 year old collection popped up today for $18K o.b.o . I believe ive seen at least 5 Huge collections like this on ebay in the past month or 2.
Do you think its because many people conclude that their collections have peaked in price and now is the time to sell out?
2. I've parted ways with a couple other game collections I had (Saturn, SNES, Master System) at various times for mainly monetary reasons. I don't want to nor do I plan to sell off my NES collection (with the exception being my doubles, and I tend to try and trade those more than sell anyway). That being said, I guess I've already proven to myself that if I need money badly enough, the games will go (the other collection though... never).

I think the biggest majority of collectors ( of the diehard varity) have pretty much completed their collections. The number of new on fire must have a complete collection even if I have to starve collectors have went down signifintaly lately. I think the days of people paying hundreds of dollars on a regular basis for games will soon come to a end. sure every now and then someone will get the bug and go crazy buying, but for the most part I dont think the high prices will continue.
I see it happening more and more with new collectors diving in and relizing if they want to try and complete a collection these days there looking at spending tens of thousands of dollars. which the average collector isnt willing to do. Im looking foward to the games bottoming out. then you will see whos really into collecting and whos into making money.
Myself Im just really curious what the true reason some of the guys that once spent money like no tomorow building their collections sold out for. guess im kind of glad I got into nes collecting years ago because there is no way on the earth i would pay the kind of money people are today for games.
And yes I do think the prices are going to start dropping big time. anyone notice gas has went up 40 cents in the last week
The habit of spending crazy amounts for games or 'shop till you drop' does seem to be going down. And with what seems like fewer and fewer die hard collectors entering the scene (as you mentioned), only means that supply will topple demand as more people start to sell out and notice they are only getting fractions of what they once paid for their items.
Having sold of parts of my collection before, here are some examples of what I paid in 2007 and early 2008 and what I recieved on ebay in the last 6 months:
Stadium Events- paid $1200, sold $1200, probably have a hard time getting $1000 now
Chubby Cherub- paid $400, sold $180
Sqoon- paid $250, sold $160
then I sold a lot of 100 CIB that I estimated I spent $1000 on. only sold for around $400
As you can see this has got me worried over here...
well if you look at the first dozen or so pages of nes on ebay you will see maybe only a dozen auctions with actual bids. most are all bins or auctions with a high starting price. if the demand was so great for nes most all these auctions would have bids or be sold. Its just come to the point with nes people have it set in their minds this game is worth this, and when no one buys the game the person says well ill be dammed if i ll sell for less so the game just sits forever. which i think just turns more people off to collecting. until it gets to the point people just let the auctions start at 99 cents and let them run we will never know the true value of stuff.
Like my broken record has said over and over something is only worth what some one is willing to pay.
If someone is willing to pay 500 dollars for athena its was worth 500 to them but when the next athena come up for sale it doesnt mean it will sell for more than 2.00 dollars. but if that did happen you would see a bunch of athenas with 500 dollar starting prices. this has really been my biggest pet peeve with collecting. let the market dictate the prices, kind of reminds me of the goverment everyone is trying to hold the inflated prices of a year or so ago instead of letting the market go down
Ive been collecting for 7 years or so and Im sure we will all agree that prices have gone up steadily in the last 3 to 4 years. Having browsed on ebay recently and compared prices to the same time last year, I have only noticed a decline for the most part. Most stuff has gone down 10-30% on average. Which brings me to belive that if I dont sell out now, im in for a bigger loss in the next year or two.
Why? I expect you don't invest in stocks at all. Markets simply aren't that straightforward unless there's some tangible external reason (i.e., Chrysler's problems) that depresses values. Classic games are fine. If for some reason they became illegal to trade on eBay, or the ROMs started to go bad and the carts permanently ceased to function after a certain amount of time - that would constantly and permanently affect values negatively. Wiiware, emulation and remakes have all HELPED the classic games market, and those are just a few good reasons why it's so healthy right now.
I'll start to worry when NintendoAGE goes defunct from lack of posts, classic game expos across the country are cancelled en masse, and eBay eliminates the "vintage games" category because nobody is listing in it.
Oh and one more thing, your estimate is just plain wrong. I happen to actually have average price data on all individual cartridges from May of last year. Comparing the price of a complete collection today versus twelve months ago shows a 10% increase in the value of a loose NES collection.
If you'd like me to "show my work," please refer to last month's NintendoAGE e-Zine for details on how I compile my price guide.
I'd be curious to see your work, which is why I wanted to find out which metric you were using, since I've been using eBay as well.

At least two people were willing to spend in excess of $1300 for that one, just last month.
I predict rares and classics will continue to go up, and mid rares will stay about the same. and common crap will continue to go for dirt. Makes sense to me.
dan youre getting it from all sides today
True that
FC, that one that ended for 999 as we said would have gone for much more had it started at a different price as one thing, and also there were 2 other factors: the BIN, and the fact that some people on NA were also looking for it but decided not to bid so Mark would get it, and he did.
Last 2 sold for $1029 and $999 . Ebay does not lie. You would have to be high to think its worth more then that.
It is worth whatever someone would pay for it. I know of two people that did no place bids on that Stadium Events so Mark would have a better shot.
Other Factors
* It is summer time prices go down
* That 999 auction start price hurt it
* The other stadium events had some circumstances surrounding it
Stadium Events is one of those games that one day you just say screw it and go for it. When more than one person says that at the same time things go for higher prices.

I agree. when I started collecting seven years ago, people were bitching about the same thing, that all the old collectors were selling out. Well, the fact is people come, people go.. its normal and healthy

I agree about the high BINs, I don't like them either... but changes to ebay's listing policies have made it less attractive to just do straight auctions.
2- Have you tought about selling it or do you plan to soon? - Nevar!
3- For those of you who have sold out, what was the reason(s)? - It would be kids, house, or anything else family related. Other than that I plan to have it all until its all worthless
Nice, man. Welcome to the boards and good job calling the admin a stoner in your first day here. I'm done with this thread.
I dont know what your getting all worked up over buddy? The last 2 sold for $1000 so its worth $1000 right now wheter you like it or not.
With that said, all these common games that are 2.99 or 3.99 BIN and then 4.99 shipping, man, that copy of Excitebike just became 8 bucks all said and done. Theres some honest sellers out there though, and I dont mean to give them all a bad rap, as I know it costs $ to package and ship and do it right.
If you started to fill holes or just expand your collection by buying off ebay, you would just end up spending so much more..id rather take my chances with flea/yard sales/second hand etc.
I guess what I'm saying is that I'm not surprised we have all these games not selling or 3 pages of BIN's for 2.99 that never get bought.
