Ive been having toughts about selling my collection recently and it looks that im not alone. I see more and more collections and sell-outs on ebay each week. Not just small collections but huge ones as well. Maybe its due partly to the economy or something else. I wanted to ask everyone
1- How do you feel about your collection?
2- Have you tought about selling it or do you plan to soon?
3- For those of you who have sold out, what was the reason(s)?
1. I'm getting close to having all the CIBs that I first started going after. I'm super stoked! Afterwards I'm going back and probably paying more of a premium than I have the first time around to get some upgrades.
2. Only way I would sale is if I were in dire need of money with an extreme quickness. And I don't see that happening ANY time soon. *knocks on wood*
Been around for over 10. Personally I dont have a problem with the value of some games going down esp. Stadium events. I do agree with SuperNesman if he would have started it lower it would have sold for more. I also think that once the economy gets up and running again the prices will go back up gradually. Just my thoughts though.
95% of the posts in this thread are about $$$$ = today is a sad, sad day (and that formula is 100% fo' real, yo!). If all you guys are in this for the bling bling, I've got some swamp water at the north pole with your name on it.
Collect for fun or for collecting's sake, don't collect for money!

I agree I know some people paid way to much for games but if the market goes down just go with the flow. I dont care if stadium events sells for 3 dollars Im happy with my copy and what i paid
Well you are also not even scratching the surface on this from the owner's of SE's side. Would I accept sub $1,000 for my SE copy HELL NO! So if it's only worth what someone is willing to pay it's also only worth that if you can find a seller. Not to mention the fact that Late April to Early October is the ABSOLUTE DEAD ZONE for selling NES on eBay. Anything listed during this time easily knock off 25-40% of the late October to early April value.
Last 2 sold for $1029 and $999 . Ebay does not lie. You would have to be high to think its worth more then that.
In all fairness, the last ONE sold on Ebay for $1029 and $999. Both were the same copy. One was from an extremely low feedback seller (<10) and the other had a high starting bid as Scott already pointed out. It also didn't help the last seller at all that he bought and sold the game within days of owning it, just seems sketchy.
:-P well i've said it before and i'll say it again ... Dan if you'll adjust the price guide to $1 or $2 for certain titles it would be a bit more accurate ... though compiling the data i'm sure is a pain and the price guide is still a good source ... that said ... FCTwin if you expected over $1,000 for those complete games you should have sold them separately ... or bought them for cheaper and yes people will pay more than 1000 for stadium events ... last two times i've gunned for a bid the first time i sat and waited and bid at last second and well the bid didn't go through ... second time i signed up at a bid sniper program (i think it was auctionsniper.com) and told it to bid within 5 seconds left and yep you guessed it bid did not go through for a second time ... let's just say mrmark probably would not have won the auction if my bid went through but good for him ... you can't really put a value on some of this super rare stuff
As you can see this has got me worried over here...
So you are a 7-year collector with lots of experience who claims to know the market well. This is funny considering what you have mentioned here.
I'd buy Chubby Cherub CIB in good condition for $250 in the blink of an eye and I don't even want it. This game is STUPID HARD to come by, easily the 3rd or 4th hardest LICENSED box to come by (SE, F2, DK Math), and is VERY CONDITION SENSITIVE since it is an early release. In other words, if you got a MINT CIB of this, you name your price and someone will eventually pay it or they'll spend well over a year or two looking for it. If you sold it for $180 then I hope it was beat-up, otherwise you don't know the market as well as you think.
As for Sqoon, was it ever $250? I've only been in the market for roughly a year, but I always thought this was a $150ish - $200 (MINT) game. If you bought it for $250 you must have been overpaying here as well.
Jeez...this guy is worse than you were, originally, Jonas
originally?
Sorry, couldn't resist. I kid, I kid.
My collection is growing fairly rapidly at this point. I like it a lot and now that I have focused more on my main systems its not as diluted as it had been. I recently made several large buys and have knocked off some toughies.
Because I collect CIB and am picky on condition it is tough but I am fairly patient. I havent counted recently but I'm pretty sure I'm around 500 NES CIB all NM or better. Also starting on SNES and Gameboy now too but they are second priority.
I would also like to "pile on" to Jone's point on Chubby Cherub... maybe I missed something but ANYONE selling a MINT CIB Chubby Cherub for $250 I will buy every single one available for sale. NO LIMIT... I'll buy them all at that price. Hell I would even buy just MINT boxes for that price you keep the cart and book.
I guess the market isn't going down on Chubby Cherub
Selling things in lots = instant loss of value. It is okay for crappy common carts, but if you are looking to make the most $$$ lots is not the way to go (with the exception of bundling)

Nah there aren't any for sale, I'd be buying them too OP just said he sold his for $180 after paying $400 for it which is mind-blowing considering a lot of people on this site would drop a nice chunk of change in a heartbeat. I just pulled $250 out of my ass because I knew that'd be a low-end estimate, god only knows what a DEAD MINT one would go for? (I guess $600ish, i.e. a bit less than what a DEAD MINT DK Math could go for).
Even though I've been officially collecting for a couple years, I still feel that I haven't made progress from a collector's point of view. My collection is tiny, however, I think the reason it's going so slow is that I've been hitting up the high-end items lately (NES 2, Stack-Up, R.O.B.). I also buy a lot of merchandise simply because I can't help it (Mario telephones, Donkey Kong coin banks).
Now, I wouldn't even think of selling it off, mainly because I worked hard to get individual items.
I just reached 400 a few weeks ago and I think it's a weird spot to be at. I have all the classic stuff and a lot of the crap. I need a lot of crap and expensive stuff. Lately I've been filling all the crap holes. 15-20 at a time. When they show up I usually call a friend over and we play crappy games. It's kinda fun. Also I usually find one or 2 that are kinda fun. I was getting way into Swords & Serpents a couple weeks ago. But as for shopping in the wild it's rough now. All I see I have or it's crappy and over priced. I do still go look though, you never know. So I think I'm kinda stuck getting games no one besides us have ever heard of until about 550 or 600. The start putting down some cash for the 30$ and up games I've just never run into.
But yes I love my big ass wall of games. I love people reactions when they come in my house. One guy asked if they all worked.? Lol! I told another guy I had over 400 different Nes games and he would not believe me! LOVE IT!!!I will never sell them. They are mine.
Three of the things I like about collecting Nes game are:
1 They remind me of when I was young and had like 12 games. I would always trade 1 good game for 2 or 3 wak ass games. So now I like some weird ones. Muscles!
2 There is an end number. I will not be doing this forever. Maybe talking about them with you guys but I will have them all one day. I'm guessing 5 years.
3. I can actually do something with them. What do you do with Baseball cards? Stamps?
If your over it that's fine. But selling them off is a VERY big decision. Make sure you think about it long and hard. Also collecting is really fun. You could just start over.
On a side note about 10 years ago I had over 200 different 2600 games. Long story short they where in a car that got stolen. For a long time it was to painful to look at 2600 games. Now with out even really trying I'm back up too over 100. Still missing H.E.R.O. though.
For your information the games that I sold were mint. Pure collectors copies. I laugh everytime somone says they will buy and XX amount of games for XX amount of money. Yeah right! Do you know how many times Ive heard this? Its always easy to say something and not do it.
I have been around collecting longer then the majority of you so please dont even entertain me with your self-centered posts if you have only 1 or 2 years experience, which im assuming you do because you fail to know that Sqoon was selling for $250 at a point.
Oh man. I haven't been here long. But I have done a fairly large trade/sell with Braveheart, and if he says he'll buy a mint Chubby Cherub for $250, then just pm him your paypal addy and the $ will be there next time you look. I don't have much collecting experience, mostly cause I'm pretty casual about the whole thing, but a lot of these guys have been documenting variants and prices practically since the SNES came out.
When they show up I usually call a friend over and we play crappy games. It's kinda fun. Also I usually find one or 2 that are kinda fun.
That is totally what I do too. Go to the wall, pick out 10-15 games, force friends to play them while I laugh So far throwing babies in Bible Adventures has been the best worst game. That is a benefit of having them all instead of just a smaller collection of only the ones I like, crappy games can be entertaining too!

Nice, man. Welcome to the boards and good job calling the admin a stoner in your first day here. I'm done with this thread.
I dont know what your getting all worked up over buddy? The last 2 sold for $1000 so its worth $1000 right now wheter you like it or not.
I don't think you understand how the market works...at all.

Chubby Cherub- paid $400, sold $180
Sqoon- paid $250, sold $160
As you can see this has got me worried over here...

Not only does he misunderstand the market, he completely misunderstands who he's talking to around here.
FCTwin, you should probably just shut up for awhile and lurk. You might learn something.

Jone, I agree with you in all aspects, but I think Sqoon was closer to 250. Correct me if I'm wrong.

OK... if he sold one for $180 my guess is the box was trashed.
That's my guess too, so why would someone with "7 years collecting experience" pay $400 for it in the first place? lol...
Nice, man. Welcome to the boards and good job calling the admin a stoner in your first day here. I'm done with this thread.
im sick of reading this newbie's posts and i only got to this post of dan's.
i have seen CIB SMB3s sell for $40 in fair condition... does that mean that the next one will sell for that? HELL NO.
so then why is it not possible that an SE can end for upwards of $1500 RIGHT NOW? because 2 auctions ended around $1k? good logic.
welcome to the boards, i hope your stay is shorter than joel's!
