Ebay actually has our back now?

Listen to this...craziest thing I have ever seen ebay do.

So I found a top loader nes on ebay BIN $20 plus $9 shipping. I decided to buy it. First, there were no pics or anything but title and description said top loader NES. Seller even used the pre filled info. Now I knew going into this that it was possible to be one of those knock offs but took my chances. I got it in and sure enough, it was a knock off. The seller had 900+ feedback so I figured he knew what he was doing.

I contacted him and said that this was not the system I purchased and I wanted a refund. Long story short, he was a douche and would not give a refund so I did the whole paypal claim deal. Well, if you have noticed lately, when you do a claim, they give you a chance to contact ebay by phone first. I don't do that because I THOUGHT paypal was easier. Well, ebay called me at work one day and I told them about what happened and they went to the auction and viewed it and understood my side. Normally, through paypal, you send the item back first and then you get the refund. You lose the return shipping so you end up losing at the end of the purchase....well, listen to what homedude told me.

Ebay guy: I'm sorry you have has this trouble. Here is what we can do. If you want to send the item back, then we can give you a 10 ebay gift card to cover the shipping. (Right here, I'm like WTF?? That is sweet!!) or you can just keep the package and we will just refund you the entire price of the system and shipping. That is only if you feel comfortable keeping the item and getting a full refund. (Now I'm really like WTF?? I get to keep the POS and get my money back?? um.....option B please)

So, the next day, they sent me a refund for $29. How crazy it that. Now hopefully this story won't cause people to go be dishonest because I am sure somehow you could do this over and over...but I thought this was nuts. I was just happy about not having to ship the system back. I'll probably give it to my little brother, but it is a pain to ship something back just to lose money, ya know?

Anyone else had this experience?

  • Ya, this was mentioned earlier that they were gonna do this, but the problem is sellers are gonna get jacked I think.
  • my opinion of ebay is slowly changing...

I completely agree. However, if something is misrepresented, then the seller should refund. But I can definitely see this getting abused.
  • I'm about done with ebay. They've made me vomit too many times. that's bad ass that they helped you. Its about time.
  • Well well, someone's coming to their customers' aid. I think they've done too much bad to make up for it with this "good" bullshit, but still, at least they're doing something.
  • Yeah, I'm going to try CTCW...I just haven't listed in a while because I have been to busy...so Mike, if you read this...I'm coming...lol.
  • Humn... congrats to you on this one. I just see this being abused though down the line. You know that $29 was added right to that seller's eBay fee. For small items most sellers probably won't notice and eBay will get away with it. But let's say someone buy's Vince's DK MATH with no box top and then complains and they get refund of $199. Boom I'm sure Vince would notice that fee in his ebay month end. That's where their problem will lie.
  • Shocking, but it is almost 2 little 2 late IMO. They have sucked ass for so long and it will take them a long time to step up and impress me again.

  • Is it April 1st? Wow, that is shocking. I really don't see this lasting long, especially when high profile sellers start to complain and walk.
  • It's not even that impressive to me. Anytime I've had to deal with complaints of any kind, which thankfully there aren't many, the seller has always had to bend over backwards. Buyers have always had the upper hand, and even moreso now. I'd be more shocked if they started helping their sellers more.
  • So did the cash get pulled out of the sellers Paypal account or did ebay just send you their own funds to cover the issue? I figure they must have just taken the hit and given your their own funds. So, the buyer sold his misrepresented item and got his price, you got a free item, and ebay is out cash (minues seller fees). Not sure how that is going to work long term.
  • They never said they were going to take it from him so I am assuming they just covered it. If they were willing to give a $10 gift card, then they probbly just covered the $30. I'm sure I would have heard from the buyer by now if they took it from him.

I honestly can not see eBay just giving this money away like this.

There's no doubt in my mind the seller is going to pay for this somehow.

Direct communication between buyers and sellers will continue to be
strongly encouraged. With the new process, buyers and sellers will also
have an option to call eBay. We'll be taking a more active role, and in
certain cases when we determine the seller was not at fault we may
refund the buyer at our own expense.

I am waiting to see that one

    lmfao. yeah right.

Ebay said that they may refund the buyer at there own expense
  • Well, they hooked it up this time. I'm sure if this was some substantial amount, it probably would have gone differently.
  • Why are there so many people surprised in this thread? Of course eBay is covering it out of pocket, there is absolutely NO REASON why they'd take it from the seller. If they were going to steal the seller's money, then the seller would have a right to have his item returned. Clearly that isn't happening so eBay just stepped in to be big brother.

When you have a 1000+ feedback user of your site like smokinjoe quibbling over a measly $29 dollar item, then yes his future business is worth more than $29 and it makes sense to take a hit. Many businesses are ran like this... if you go to a restaurant and your burger comes out bloody then you can complain and get it comped (not saying that you should, but a restaurant will instantly offer to do this 9/10). If you get a hair in your pizza they'll usually offer a free one or at least a coupon to get your return business.

Who do you think pays for the 8% or 10% coupons we just discussed? You think eBay is taking that out of the seller's pockets too? LOL. It's sometimes nice to incentivize buyers or reward your frequent customers because of the word of mouth that will spread (which is EXACTLY what this thread is, mission accomplished eBay).

Sellers don't have to worry about a thing, now when a 5 feedback buyer wins a dispute like this over a triple digit item then panic should ensue.

i gotta say good point. I'm sorry for you all having to pay for this....lol.
  • eBAY calls this their "5 day seller make it right policy". Each dispute is handled individually, instead of more cookie-cutter fashion like Paypal. In the several that I've had so far, ranging from receiving nothing, to receiving a box of broken stuff, the person on the phone from ebay would make a decision as to how to handle it. In the cases of not as described, the rep asks me how much I was thinking the damage was worth to me. I tell them and they give me either a direct refund to my account, or a gift cert. code for a future purchase. When items don't arrive, they give it all back. The best thing about this is the five day waiting period is shorter than with Paypal.

From the seller perspective, I have had one claim against me so far, just a few days ago. Here's the important part of the email i received from ebay-

"We've let the buyer know you'll be providing tracking information or an estimated delivery date, so please get in touch with the buyer. If you haven't shipped the item, please issue a refund.

It's important that you contact the buyer or send a refund within the next 5 business days from the date of this email, otherwise eBay may issue a refund directly and then recover the amount from you. "

In this case, the buyer provided an incorrect address, but he refused to admit this through ebay's messaging system so ebay had me send copies of our emails back and forth including headers for proof.

Anyway, so far so good on this new method of handling buyer disputes. It does seem like it would become cost prohibitive at some point for ebay though if they keep covering the costs themselves, but a rep told me they were only doing that initially and that they would ultimately charge the refund to the seller's ebay account.
  • Exactly, I knew it was just a matter of time before seller's were going to be further screwed on this one. WAH I didn't get my item. Seller... didn't use DC#... boom notices the fee in their month end statement for the cost of eBay refunding the buyer. BOOOOO
