Please Correct me If I'm Wrong: NWC Repro

Hi, I'd just like someone to run their eyes over my following calculations and to see if I've made an error:

My main NES is a PAL system because of where I live. I'm fairly sure PAL systems run at 50Hz and NTSC run at 60Hz.

This gives rise to the systems playing games at different speeds, the PAL's run noticeably slower (Very noticeable on SMB). So 50/60 = 5/6 =~ 0.83333....

So should the PAL systems playing NWC get a time increase of 6/5 to compensate for the slower way it plays its games?

If so, the competition time of 6:21 (381 seconds) becomes 7:37 (457 seconds). However I've timed myself from when the SMB screen is first displayed and when the time is up the timer reads ~ 6:45, nearly a minute out.

If this is so I'm at a servere disadvantage. Also, the game won't actually load up when the lockout chip is connected (I have a switch on my NES to enable/disable the lockout switch rather than just cutting it for good) so as far as I can tell it won't play on a PAL system in its original form.

I have a toploader and have timed myself on that, I can complete SMB after roughly 1 minute, it takes me around 1:10 - 1:15 on the PAL system. I just thought this difference would have been accounted for.

It does say on the Retrozone website under the NWC repros that the game does account for this but as far as I can tell it doesn't or somebody (possibly me) has their calculations wrong.

Any help much appreciated.

  • I dont know, but even if you have longer time on the PAL version i wouldnt say you have any advantage on getting a higher score. As you say, Mario runs noticeably slower so it will take longer time to gather 50 coins. Rad Racer is also very glitchy on a PAL system, you can't see the road/horizon that well.

    EDIT: Fixed typo.
  • Yeah maybe there is no advantage to playing on a PAL system but it does say on the Retrozone website that it accounts for the PAL systems running slower, but it seems PAL systems are at a big disadvantage rather than being on level terms with the NTSC counterpart.

I've played on PAL NES's since they were first released, its only recently I've got an NTSC toploader so I stuck in my ways with the slower games, different timing etc on jumps and alike.
  • Tell bunnynoy, about this, maybe he knows the problem.
