play and trade games

this store just opened by me, and they sell VINTAGE GAMES!!  they just opened up, so the stock wasn't that great, but i picked up deathbots for 2.99, L'Emperuer for 7.99 and a few others for 2.99.  it is nice because they even had a super C for 9.99 and the smb was 2.99 (not 14.99 like alot of pawn shop and game stores).

well see how much stock they build up, i hope they keep this going.   i was just getting into collecting when gamestop was selling nes games  and then stopped.   now long for those days, even though the prices were kinda high.   anybody else have this store around them?

  • There are a lot of these stores around... mostly in California and Florida. There used to be one down the street from me but it closed down after only being open for about 5 months. I enjoyed having a retail store near me that sold older games but "Play N Trade" always seened a little high on their prices. Every once in a while you can find a good deal. Found a NFR SNES game mixed in with the rest of the SNES games for pretty cheap! image
  • They seem to start of with low prices but it changes.

We had the same thing Now I see SMB/Duck Hunt for 9.99 SMB 3 19.99 CRAZY prices on anything boxed. Everything is priced at ebay BIN prices (not sold) It used to be a good place, but not anymore

  • I jus found one, its in new jersey, but they don't have a lot really, witch sux
  • that sucks. i guess ill get the deals while i can or they are still open. thanks for the info though, i wont get my hopes up about that place
  • Justin (Penguin) has one right by him in Florida, I think that's where they are pretty popular. I believe there is one about an hour away from here, but I've never gone there. I wish they'd open up somewhere near here, it's nice to find game stores where the people who price the games don't know values.
  • GamexChange closed a few years ago. They were the best. There is still replays, but it's too far away, and has a bad selection to choose from. They have even put up cases on display for games they had lost.

Gotta agree. We still have a lot of them around here. I get good deals from there all the time. That is where I got my BB2 for 6.95.
  • There used to be a GameXChange in Chattanooga some years ago. Fun store, but usually a bit overpriced, it was. Just a couple months ago, there was a Play 'n Trade that opened in Chattanooga, but I haven't had the chance to get down there (though if their store prices are anything like the prices they advertised on Craigslist, they're as high as eBay).
  • The Play 'n Trade that opened up here finally paid off for me. I just got about ten NES games or so for $33. I'm going to clean and test them later tonight.
  • I've been to two of them here in South Florida. One of them is definitely better than the other. PnT 1 is the one that I've been to five or six times in the past few weeks, and that's where i've made most of my purchases in terms of retro games. They've got stuff cheap, and the employees gave me a bunch of discounts on more expensive games. Penguin's bought a bunch of stuff there, too, and wouldn't it figure that it's stuff that I saw and put back. V_V

    1:

    - They've got individual sections for each console and they're more than happy to go in the back and see if they've got any more stuff.

    - Their prices are reasonable, especially compared to eBay these days...

    - They've got people working there that actually take the time to clean each game.

    - They place valuable games behind glass.

PnT 2 is one that's about 45 minutes away from me, and though I found a bunch of neat items there, they are definitely inferior to the other PnT.

    2:

    - This one isn't organized at all. All the retro stuff is placed on one rack, which is fine, as they may not get as many older games in, but there's NES mixed with SNES and Genesis in between Saturn, etc... It's a mess.

    - The guy there had no regard for a game's worth. The first PnT had its' rare stuff under glass, this place had Final Fantasy II next to Zoop and Madden '94. It would be comically easy to just switch out some random football game for FFII when the guy isn't looking. (I don't condone that at all, but that guy's setup is just begging for someone to screw them over).

    - The sole employee (possibly owner?) in the store is an okay guy, it's just that he doesn't really know what the hell he's talking about. I was in the store with a friend of mind, and my friend started talking to the guy working about Mega Man. My friend asked if the guy had Megaman Battle Network, the employee responded with "No, we don't sell PC games here." This is the same store that Penguin grabbed an $8 Tengen Tetris, apparently. (God, that's creepy as hell that I know that yet i've never actually met him...) No such deals existed when I was there.

Now, I'm just nitpicking, but the point is, the stores vary by location. One could be awesome, and another in town could suck.

They don't know everything, screw variants 72-60 adapter games, etc.

  • There were 3 in town here, picked up Suikoden II two times for $75.00 each, Castle of Deceit (Blue) for $2.99, Bubble Booble 2 for NES three times for $60, $60, and $44, Dusty Diamond for $14.99, Action 52 for NES for $9.99, Tecmo Super Bowl for $.99 three different times (they had them marked as the Genesis version on 3 occasions). They have plently of good deals on rare titles but the prices on the Mario and Zelda stuff is crazy.
  • Well, I finally got to check out a PnT today...in Knoxville o_O . Managed to score some great stuff (Zelda Collector's Edition guide, $9.99; Donkey Kong (3-screw image ), $19.99; Gun-Nac, $4.99; Magic Darts, free (buy-2-get-1-free sale)). All in all, a nice place, though some of their newer stuff was quite a bit overpriced (even over new retail in some cases).
  • The one near me just jacked their prices again; no NES game is under $4.99 currently (Bases Loaded II, a bigfoot w/ label torn to shreads, etc)
  • There is a Play N Trade here by my work, they have some old school stuff, but only a handfull for each system. They have ok pricing. They even had a few sealed Gamegear games.

I almost bought all of their SMS games because the price was really good, but then I realized I had most of them.

  • There is one that I know of in Austin, TX, near me. I never go in there because the prices are high, although they do have NES games, which is rare. I think there is still a GameXChange in Madison, WI and one in West Lafayette, IN. I used to travel for work, and planned out all the places to hit while in town.  I once got a TG-16 complete in box for $7.99.  I didn't ask any questions.
  • I have a nice Play N Trade near my house. I cleaned the place out though when i first went to it. The whole top shelf on one side of the store was all boxed NES games (no games in them but came with all inserts). I managed to pick up all of the boxes for free after telling them how I collect NES and all. I first stumbled across a Play N Trade in New Jersey. It seemed outdated, maybe one of the first? They had a deluxe set NES boxed and a heavy sixer VCS and some other pretty cool stuff. ( by the way it's located in Forked River, New Jersey)
