  • That sucks... see if they'll pay you enough for your time in replacing all your personal files while they're at it.
  • damn, that sucks man. I feel for you cause it happened to me not 6 months ago. Mine wasn't the power company but a nasty ass virus and I lost everything I had. I was uber pissed! Hopefully you will get a new PC maybe.

  • Surge protectors are like 12 bucks!

Hopefully it's just your power supply that got cooked. I've never seen a hard drive fried by power surge.. just power supplies, mother boards, and anything plugged into said motherboard (RAM and expansion cards).

Not the kind that will protect you from a close lightning strike, or a real honest-to-goodness electric company power surge. I think most people use the cheapie $12-buck power strips to plug their computer components into, and think they're true surge protectors since they've got the little red button on them. Truth is, they don't protect from shit. Even if you pay $100 for a _real_ surge protector (they wrigh about 25-35 lbs) it's not guaranteed to protect your junk from a real nasty lightning bolt, but it will protect from electric company crap. Fortunately, the kind of lightning bolt it won't protect against will probably put a hole in your roof, so you have bigger concerns image
  • I put a claim in with the power company. It was connected to a surge protector. The surge fried all the eqipment at the post office and the neighbors computer. I dug out our old computer and am using it. piece of junk but at least i can slowly surf the net til it crashes
  • your hard drive should definately be fine, so atleast you didnt lose everything on it
