Is it considered a reproduction if you use a famicom adapter to make a NES version of a game?

Hi,

I used a famicom adapter from a Hogan's Alley cart to make a NES version of Devil World from a Devil World Famicom cart since it is in English.  I was wondering if this would be considered a reproduction or if there is even a classification for it?

On a side note, I was thinking of doing this for Rodland and Gimmick.  Does anyone know if the Famicom versions are in English?

Is it worth doing this or should I just solder together repros instead?

I'd love to hear all of your feedback on this topic.

Thanks,

Nick

  • I personally consider them conversion cart. You didn't "reproduce" anything, so you can't really call it a "Reproduction". You just changed the Famicom game out of the cart and printed a new label. You converted it from a Japanese cart to an American one.

I want a copy of Mr. Gimmick myself and am thinking of doing the same thing. Like you, I too would need the game to be in English. I also want to do this with Gradius II. It's all in English as well.
  • ^--- agree with Mason.
  • toats. conversion.

you can also convert king kong 2, gradius II, karateka, recca, bird week (maybe the worst game in famicom history), ummm, i'm missing a few. those are the ones i've done that famicom have in engrish.. oh! Gundam. some konami game where yr 2 planes and meld into one.

  • I've been playing the Japanese version of Gimmick today actually, and there really isn't any dialogue so far. The intro is just images. I'm on level 4. I'm sure the credits are in Japanese, but as far as gameplay it doesn't seem that there is any text involved at all.
  • As long as you don't try to sell them off as the real thing, you can do whatever you want. I don't think that it is a repo...you are just using the converter as it was meant to be used.

I have been doing this lately for a number of famicom games with wierd mappers (also replacing the chips with translated version if need be).  i would avoid using a converter if need be, they are becoming harder to find and kind of pricey (10-15 dollars a piece).  famicom gimmick would be a good one to use a converter with since it cant be reproduced, but rodland is UNROM, i just put the pal rom on a US board, works great (no sound issues):

  • I plug cheap multis in them, from things like the "Power Games" and crap. They make a nice NTSC multicart for only $10-$15, like you said Joe. Those famiclones are ALL over yard sales, since kids got them for Xmas over the past few years before NOA shut down the mall kiosk guys.
