VGA Grading - BAH!

This is aimed towards the more hardcore sealed collectors.. how many of you have an NES game that is 95 or above?  I have sent in a perfect copy of Castlevania 2 with 2-3 minor scuff marks on the front of the box and it got tagged a 90.  Which I honestly think  is complete bullshit.

Detailed Report - Box has nice color, tight cellophane, and sharp corners.  The primary flaws are moderate scuffing predominately on the box front, very light corner marks on the front top left corner, and back top left corner likely due to the way the box was originally folded and shrink wrapped.

Wouldn't minute scuffs justify a 95 and no scuffs a 100??!

This was one of the finest copies I have personally seen.  Moderate scuffing my ass! ( no way is this moderate - literally 2 visible scuffs labeled "moderate")   I cant believe that there could possibly be anything out there better than his stash unless we had a time machine and took it literally back to the day the game came out.

Really makes me want to not collect anymore. BAH!

This was one of Dov's finest copies I personally picked up from him.  Moderate scuffing my ass! ( no way is this moderate - literally 2 visible scuffs labeled "moderate")   I cant believe that there could possibly be anything out there better than his stash unless we had a time machine and took it literally back to the day the game came out.

I had a copy of SNES Super Adventure Island II graded recently. It was MINT, no scuffs, straight from Nintendo of Canada. It came back at a 95. I was happy.

So for your game to get a 90 even with MINOR scuffs makes sense to me.

  • I was under the impression that games had to be untouched by human hands to get 100 (which only happens if you get it straight off the line), and 95 is reserved for mint games (ie. no scuffs)... am I wrong?
  • Never had a game graded. I really don't have the space for mint CIB's. but for comics (I'm a bit of a collector) if you bought it off of a comic book shop's shelf the day it came out it's a 9.5. Only way to score a solid 10 most of the time is to buy it straight from the publisher and have them send it to be graded straight off the line.
  • I've come to realize that 90 is an awesome score for any cardboard boxed game. 90's are beautiful.
  • By the way, I know they have gotten unopened 6 packs of nes and n64 games in to grade. Uncirculated, and presumably perfect. Of those, most will get 90, a few 95. Manufacturing flaws, as subtle as they are, are what prevent a higher score. I only know of a single 100 score for a cardboard boxed Nintendo game.
  • ^ I have never heard of or seen a 100 given to an NES game. That would be pretty exciting.

I don't collect sealed games, but from what I have heard, it sounds like most of the 85-95 grades are pretty much mint by VGA standards.

Care to share what game?  and possibly who got it graded?

I cannot share that, but the owner does read the forum.  I will let them come forward on their own if they choose.
  • I understand, thanks for responding..
  • A cardboard 100? To me that's MUCH more impressive than a sealed SE, the owner of this game should make this his avatar if it is indeed true.
  • ^^^^ For some reason, I have the sinking suspicion that it may not be a guy...
  • it's gotta be raregamergirl then.

    Outstanding.

    [/thread]

  • I saw a 100 grade pokemon stadium on ebay

  • Raregamergirl has been around... she doesn't post, but if you look at her profile you can clearly see she still visits NA regularly.. What's the deal?

    Am I missing something?
  • No, I do not have a VGA 100. Someone actually asked me if I did via email a bit ago and directed me to this. I am not really a fan of grading, but to each their own. I have no more than 5 graded games currently (if that).

As for posting, I have been ridiculously busy for some time now. I check in on mainly buy/ sell threads or to PM people here and there, but that is mostly it.
  • Back on topic, I think if you got it above 85, that's just wonderful. 90s to me are just factory flaws that you can't help.

You can't be serious with this post.  You obviously don't know VGA's grading scale.  90 is a perfect copy in almost every case.  What a separates a 90 from a 95 are factory imperfections that most of us have a hard time seeing.

  • And to answer the original question - I have over 100 VGA games and not one NES game is above a 90. They are pretty impossible to come by.
  • I think he's just unfamiliar with "official grading" scales in general. Take a look at some of the debates on comic scales (related) and action figure scales (pertinent since VGA also does action figures with the same scale).
  • yeah 85 is pretty much the standard "mint" as I've seen, 90's are like mint plus, 95's would be like spectacular copies.
  • I've always wondered, how do they grade games with price stickers on them? I noticed in another thread that someone posted their grading report card, and VGA listed a seam split as a "factory defect", and didn't drop the grade because of it. Since price stickers are obviously something that can't be removed without damage, how do they handle that? I haven't seen any graded games with price stickers, so I'm assuming they don't grade well.
  • I've heard somewhere that it has to do with where the sticker's placed. If it's covering an important part, then it's bad.
  • Just to clarify; I'm in no way bashing VGA, just a little disappointed. I thought for sure this game would have got better than a 90. This game is a beauty.

This make me realize how hard it will be to meet my collecting goal - full 90+ graded NES collection ^_^. Which pretty much is impossible, but my goal none the less... With this beauty getting a 90 I can't imagine buying another sealed copy off ebay without hi-res pics and a detailed report. =/

VGA will typically remove the price sticker if you ask them to and somehow they do it flawlessly.  It is very difficult to get a grade of 90 with a price sticker though...I haven't seen many (any?) with those.

You shouldn't be disappointed, you should be thrilled with a 90.  In fact, if you're not, I'll buy that copy from you as I need a 90 CV2 (I don't think I've seen any to date).  Just as an FYI - 90s are very difficult to come by for NES, so yes, I think your goal is quite impossible, but it's a hell of a goal to shoot for image
