Very interesting observation about Godzilla 2

So a certain member inquired about buying my MINTY Godzilla 2 and in looking at the picture I just realized something bizarre.  Here's the picture:

Look at it and see if you notice.  I'll give you a few moments.

So look at the poster, Godzilla 2 was apparently titled "Rodan" before it was released, then the the title was scrapped and changed to Godzilla 2.  I'm willing to bet all of the posters for Godzilla 2 looked like this, but hey it's still pretty damn interesting if you ask me.  Seems like a lot of posters were lost over the years so maybe these could be a bit hard to find.  Either way, you proto guys better get on the hunt, maybe there's a "Rodan" cart out there after all image

    HAHA!  Point noted.
  • ...must...find...Rodan...proto...

Cool stuff, never seen that before. They must have screwed their heads on right and figured that the chances of a game selling off of the "Rodan" franchise was not a good business decision.

What does the little snippet under the Rodan picture say?
  • It's hard to tell from the picture, but Rodan looks like a cross between Godzilla and an eagle. Bird-like head with huge reptilian wings. Here's what the blurb says:

"Coming 1991! A giant flying reptile assaults the earth! Rodan, Godzilla's arch enemy! Now an exciting NES game!"

Damnit I want to be a reptilian bird now....
  • lol, nice.

Cool observation jone. minty stuff too.

  • Hey, I woulda bought it back then. Rodan is probably the best known other creature in the Godzilla franchise besides Mothra.

You can never have too much "man in suit".
  • ^Lmao, I love rubber suit giant monster movies, although I haven't actually seen any of the Rodans yet. I'm still working my way through the Gojira series image.
  • Jonas - That certainly makes it sound like "Rodan" proto might exist...but what leads you to believe it was the original title for "Godzilla 2"? Like Aaron says, Rodan is a well known Godzilla character, and would have easily carried its own game in Japan, at least.

I would be willing to believe it was a totally separate game to begin with, that was just never released.
  • Agreed Arch... and I'm confused by the logic anyways... if that poster came inside the Godzilla 2 and it says coming soon... then Rodan should be it's own game.

    quoted from article

Exactly how much was changed when the title took a new name is not entirely known; however, the game shares very little in common with Godzilla Monster of Monsters (1989), beyond the cast of monsters.

  • did that poster come with godzilla 2? is it on wiz's list? we all know that it is damn near impossible to match up those things with what games they came with; however, i do agree with what has been said. it is most likely that this was its own game altogether.

edit: looks like we were wrong!

and, in jones pic, the first thing i noticed was the fact that the box and manual had different colors on them! damn, i need to stop looking for variants of everything! haha

  • I got into Nintendo Power a little late, starting with issue 50 which allowed me to get all the back issues for $50, if it weren't for being so late, if I had been with NP since when this game was advertised I would've been very anxious awaiting it to come out, but by then I kinda knew this game would never show itself.

Interestingly the sprites for Rodan exist in Godzilla: Monster of Monsters, as well as Anguilas, too bad they were never used.
