What makes some boxes / manuals much harder to find than others?

This is more of a theoretical topic as in there is really no right answer. I am curious as to what everyone thinks are some of the factors that cause some boxes such as chubby cherub to become more rare than others. The rarity obviously exists, the question is why.

Some general resons that may apply to any games with harder to find boxes / manuals are:

1. It is an early release with moderate to low production

2. The game itself is scarse and therefore it is even less likely than most to have a box

3. The game saw scant public releases and was primarily a rental title

4. It is a game meant for very young children (younger kids have the tendancy to destroy things image)

These are the only factors I could think of but there are probably more. Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?  I'm sure this topic has come up before but I dont think there were ever any specific factors questioned.

  • ^also you forgot: The game has terrible disturbing box art that features a naked baby.

For the older Bandai releases, take into account that the boxes were made from like recycled toilet paper or something. They probably looked tatty after the first week of inserting/removing the game using the box as a storage vessel.
  • Very true! I never even considered the actual material of the box itself. That would also be a reason why 3rd party / unlicensed boxes are oftentimes in terrible shape or are harder to find.
  • I've often wondered this myself, for the reasons you stated. Obviously if a game is rare than the likelihood is the box is even rarer. What I don't understand though is games that exist in huge abundance like the black box games, have difficult to find boxes. Thats always perplexed me.

  • being a hangtab im sure it didnt take long for the box to become crap and then thrown away. not sure how rare chubby cherub is there always seems to be plenty of carts.
  • ^Well in Chubby's case the old Bandai boxes were constructed of poop-tastic material, so that probably didn't help.
