I'm not a big shooter fan, but I love the platformers.
I'd also reccomend any games from the Mega Man hexology, but the original Mega Man is for the seasoned player. Other Capcom classics are Little Nemo: The Dream Master, and of course, Bionic Commando.
Also, any of the late Taito titles are some of the best platformers on the system (but obviously not for those short on money).
Also look out for some Sunsoft titles. From the top of my head, I'd reccomend BATMAN, the video game that actually lives up to the movie itself (and that's saying something).
I'm going to avoid some of the more obvious suggestions:
Solar Jetman: Hunt For The Golden Warhip
Props to you my friend. You've nailed the favorite game of two-out-of-three NintendoAge admins, congrats
By the way to whomever may not have played this: If you've ever played the old C64 Lunar Lander...it's like that, but you can shoot and upgrade your pod, and there's bad guys. And twelve planets that get progressively more massive to explore. And you get to collect space-junk like a capsule full of Easter Island heads.
So really nothing like Lunar Lander...but you get the point
I would recommend 1943, megaman, and Legendary Wings for shooters. For platformers there are the obvious recommendations like Mario, but I would also recommend Ninja Gaiden.
