Cool little Nintendo Power Find

Doing the sale locally, and decided to post some pics of the lot. Pretty cool IMO. I cant find too much info on the items, and doesn't seem it was discussed in the forums before. Here ya go!

From what I can understand, the collections are complete. These are just a select few pics from the lot.

Apparently the cards were issued randomly with NP, and had a promo that if you could collect 3 of the same card, you got a free game. However, many gamers wanted to collect the cards, so NP offered the card set for sale, but marked them "collectors edition" so they could be distinguished and not used in the promotion from what I understand.

Any other background on the pogs / caps, etc? I may post some more pics, but whats attached can get the topic started.

  • I remember those cards! I have a binder full somewhere too. Excellent Mega Man X pogs also, those are the 2nd set I've seen today.
Also, have you played with that joystick yet? It's probably the loudest joystick I've ever used. CLANG CLANG CLANG... every time you move the joystick.. agh

Oh, and as for the POGs background, I'm not 100 percent sure on that, but in BuyAtari's "Unfolded Boxes" thread there is some that haven't been popped out yet. He may be able to shed some light on it.

  • Neat. I remember having all of those!

I didn't remember the cards ever being for sale. But they did come 6 to an issue of NP.

The pogs came with a few special issues, if I recall correctly (the silver-covered MegaMan X issue, is one of them).

I didn't know that! I'll have to look through my old stack of NP mags and find that one and see if the pogs are still in it. The NP issue with the silver color was badass.

    Thanks for the info, dude.

Yea, I have one boxed, and it will probably stay that way lol. There were multiple quickshot controllers that were just really loud to play with. I remember in particular one that has a large Dome surface as the joystick. It was also very loud.

I'm not 100% sure on the cards being for sale in NP, but that is what came up when I researched it. Makes sense though since they are marked so.

And thanks about the pog background. Were the binders purchased through NP, or were they a promo? Do you guys have these same binders?
  • You would get the binders from "the super power club". They were one of the cheapest items, so most subscribers could probably pick them up with just the "super power stamps" and shipping charges.

Now that I think about it, the pogs/cards were probably listed in one of the later Super Power Club catalogs for people who missed their original circulation with the magazine.

The pogs were thick enough that they weren't IN the magazine itself.  Those couple of magazines actually showed up wrapped in a plastic baggie and the pogs were in an unpunched sheet of card stock.

Basically, they were a "subscribers only" promo.

  • the pogs are sweet haha

Ah, thanks for the info. I was indeed a subscriber, and I always kept everything nice and tidy, so I'm sure they are around somewhere. I can't believe you can still remember this kind of stuff.

  • cool ! i remember the cards.NP also had cool posters.
  • I remember those cards. A friend of mine gave me a few of those years ago. I still have them somewhere. If only I could remember where I put them...
  • Well, pretty much all the info has been covered so far. The only thing I have to add is that from what I can tell, there were 3 different sheets for the POGS, with some overlap on which characters were on which. The unpunched sheets came wrapped in their own plastic, as well.

Good point.  I remember having to beat my friends at POGs to win the ones I didn't have image

I never did learn how to play the POG game. I just remember collecting the crap out of them when they were popular, and trading at school / on the bus for ones that were cool. I still have all my POGs, and I really should get rid of them since I dont care for them anymore...
  • You had to stack them, face down, and the hit the edge of the pile with a "slammer" and you kept whichever POGs were face up. It was sort of an evolution of the game of marbles.

I remember my school banning the game because it was considered to be a form a gambling.

Same here. It got really out of hand. At one point, the entire football field was filled with kids playing pogs during recess, and there was nobody on the jungle gym.

  • Were those POGS? I remember those NES/SNES/GB Nintendo Power cards.
  • Very cool stuff. You could make those into a sick poster.
