NWC will play on original AV top-loader

Someone from PSerges weekend event asked me to check this out.

Not only is the AV toploader an official product....and not modded....the new board used for this unit allows an NWC to play on the top-load AV NES unit.

For those unfamiliar with this compatability issue, an original NWC cart will only play on front-load NES units. The carts cannot be used on a top-loader. They just won't play.

The different board used on this AV unit must have a few  "somethings"  changed in it. The NWC plays perfectly.

A small add to the "Huh....did you know?"  list.

  • That's really interesting. Thanks for letting us know!
  • Thanks for bringing it up, and also trying this out.. Very interesting..
  • Good info, thanks Doug!
  • ^Are you stealing my posts Dain?
  • Thanks for the info!! Now I wish someone would post the pics of the board. That was one of the coolest things I have seen.
  • Hmmm... There's really no reason it wouldn't work on a normal top loader. There's too many variables, and it probably wasn't tested many times.
  • interesting info
  • I wonder why that is. It's not a lockout chip issue then (why some unlicensed games don't play on top-loaders).

Maybe it's related to power supply decoupling? While I do have a normal RF top-loader, I don't want to modify it and don't have a NWC cart to test anyway. But if you solder a capacitor (maybe 100uF?) between the +5V and ground pins of the cart connector of a top-loader, that might help... assuming my guess is correct of course.

  • Nintendo had two different NES AC Adapters... would that make a difference?

I have about 40 really good high-quality photos of it. As I keep saying - stay tuned!
