Why is there such a huge difference in the number of ROBs vs the nunber of Gyromites?

I seem to constantly be coming across copies of Gyromite but I have never seen a ROB in the wild. This leads me to the question of why is there such a huge difference in the number of ROBs vs the number of Gyromites? I know that you can play Gyromite with a second player instead of a ROB but wasnt the whole attraction of the game that you could play it with the robot? Seems like the ratio should be a lot closer than it is.

  • Probably because the robots ended up as toys and got trashed. The games if they made it with the system usually stayed there and got picked up at yard sales or flea markets etc

    imo
  • I agree that more game carts would survive than ROBs but do you think the ratio of ROBs to Gyromites was close to 1/1 back when they first came out?

Maybe I am just finding so many copies of the game because hardly anyone wants it but there just seem to be so many around that it makes me think there were a lot of copies sold originally to people who didnt have a ROB.
  • Gyromite was always more plentiful. I do think that is due to the fact that gyromite doesn't have to have rob to be played. I know I never had rob as a kid, but I did have gyromite.(big box version actually lol)
  • I never saw a ROB when I was growing up, it wasn't until a year or two ago that I found one finally. I think they were always in shorter supply than Gyromite.
  • You know, come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen a ROB in real life either. But I've wanted one since I was a kid.
  •  I think Slackers has a factor in the rarity of ROB. I mean, they do use him as their primary business card holder in every store image
  • I found a ROB in the wild once (probably my only good wild find) but I agree there does seem to be so few.
  • Lodgically, Gyromite and R.O.B. should have about the same amount. They were both released in the massively popular Deluxe Set, and they both got their own single releases as well.

As of now, we can only theorize why there appears to be such a quantity difference; I'm going with pats1717 on this one.

By the way, I've seen R.O.B. in the wild once at my local game store, but he was broken and wasn't for sale. When I asked about him, they said he was the store's mascot because he's been there almost as long as the game store.
  • I have a friend who owns a store that said that they had so many back in the day that they would just trash them. he still has one brand new in the box and everything in the back though. ive been trying to buy it off of him for years but he refuses to sell it and wants to put it on display at his store.
