Has a really beat up copy of Stadium Events ever come up for sale?

While I know this game is rare in my lifetime of collecting I've seen some games that are in such bad such I can't even fathom the series of events it would take for the cart to get to that point. This applies to almost all games (even the rare ones) except Stadium Events.

Anyone have any guesses why that is, or have I just missed it when a bad one came up? I'm aware of the one that has a runners face cut out of the sticker, and I've seen one on ebay years ago that had some small marker writing under the label, but asides from those (and neither is really THAT bad) I don't think I've ever seen a real crapped up copy. I'm talking tons of marker writing, excessive stickers, dirt, wear, crack in the plastic, peeling label, etc. etc.

Is this cart really well made or something? ;-)

I guess the main reason I ask is because I wonder how much it would depreciate the value of it, cause I always thought it might be a fun restoration project to attempt if I ever came across one in terrible condition. Anyone ever seen one come up for sale/have one for sale, anyone have pics of one?

  • There is one with a cigarette burn out there.
  • ^Yeah, but even that one wasn't too bad. I don't ever recall any copies being really, really bad (i.e. half the cart is full of sharpie or almost all of the label is ripped off).
  • There was the copy where one of the runners faces was cut out of the label. I think someone here has that one.
  • I remember that one Aaron. But otherwise I'm not sure if there's anything too bad.
  • I remember that one as well. Really weird. Someone essentially removed 3/4 of one of the runners with what must have been a razor (or something of the like). Someone on one of the forums (I think it was DP) was the winner of the auction.
  • I remember one that was posted on ebay where the label was damaged so he supposedly took the rest of the damaged label off and made a replacement label for it...noone ever bid on it from what I recall so it was never known if it was a scammer, a repro or the real deal...that was at least 6 or 7 years ago though, maybe more.
  • We all need to chip in on one for Paul if a shit copy comes up

  • I used to own the one with the ripped up runners face. I sold it about 18 months ago for around $750.

Wow! For some reason I really thought it would take the value down even further than that. Since I assume you weren't the one to take off the runners face, you mind telling us when and how much you picked it up for? I love hearing the history of these pieces.

we should do that if it REALLY crappy copy comes up. I would put in on it for sure. Doing this would only force him to finish the crappy set though.

Initially it was passed around between several collectors as they all got better condition copies and sold this one off. I bought it about 6 or 7 years ago from Chunky on the DP forums for $125 back when they were selling in the $300 range.

I was always more concerned with finding a box than upgrading my copy with the ripped up runners face.

  • The condition of a cart this rare is not going to drag the cart down as much as you're likely hoping/expecting...I remember a FS2 cart with a beat to piss label sold for around 10%-15% less than what they were going for at the time in good shape.

Yeah, I am the current owner of the SE without the face.  It's got a lot of character, I can say that much.  I think I paid $820 for it on eBay from Dave about a year ago (you probably netted $750 after eBay and PayPal, Dave!).  At the time, good condition copies were getting close to $1800, so I felt it was a good deal.  Good to know more history about it.  It is by no means the worst I've seen, in addition to the cigarette burn mentioned, there is also one that looks like it was soaked in water, the label is brown and wrinkled.  Haven't seen that one in a while. I may upgrade some day, but I don't see spending more than I paid for 1 cart, even if it is the rarest one.

For those who haven't seen what we're talking about..

  • To be honest I would rather own one with a somewhat known history (like this one) than a mint one. Call me a noob but I really like things thad add a KNOWN character trait.

What I mean is anyone (with the cash and desire) can own a SE. However, few know the characteristics of that cart. It seems a cart like this one or the torn to hell NWC  is somewhat famous among the collector circuit. I would like to have the KNOWN carts....

BTW anyone want to chip on the ripped up NWC for Paul?...LOL

    EDIT: Elaboration on said piont

  • You might say that until you had one, imo. While that NWC is known well, most of us would never buy it (at least at their price) because the damage would bother them. I can't say it is universal as I had watched that guy pay $4100 for that cart. For the couple hundred difference on SE's difference, I don't think most would flinch if they know the market already. I mean, Mark only paid 1k for his which is a very small difference to Joe's. I paid more, but I do feel the market does fluctuate according to who has an extra grand lying around.
  • Yeah, I flat out got lucky with my purchase. I actually didn't bid an "automatic win" amount either, I think my max bid was just under $1.4k. stupid move on my part, I could have just as easily lost that auction.
  • It is crazy. Even the beat up ones get bought up at high prices.
  • ya, even the shit ones go for huge, i need to find an NTSC cart only that is thrashed so I can get it for cheap. still won't happen though :-(
  • I never noticed the runner's foot was missing too.

Little Bobby seemed so normal growing up. It took us all by suprise when he hacked up his date to the senior prom into tiny pieces.
