Attention Arcade Cabinet Gurus!

Hey guys,

Picked up a Street Fighter (1987) JAMMA cabinet today. Lots of stuff needs to be replaced on it (most of which I can handle - new buttons, light, plexi-glass, etc)... but what I'd like to do is modify the game that the cabinet plays.

I would love it if I could get some sort of JAMMA to NES converter and hook one of BunnyBoy's Power Paks up to it and have all kinds of games!

Is this possible?

  • I could see wiring the display to the NES as well as speakers for sound, but controller input would be the real trick...

I have seen MAME machines use other emulators for NES and such to play other games, though the controller input is somehow wired to the keyboard.

Don't know if this is quite what you're looking for but it might be a better start than I can offer.
  • Hacking a couple of controllers into the JAMMA interface shouldn't be too hard. The hardest part is going to be converting the video from composite into the RGB standard in the cabinet.

To make the job easier, it'd be worth grabbing a JAMMA harness like the one here so you don't need to mess up the existing wiring.

Edit: By hacking in controllers I mean add a NES controller between the controls, and the NES. So ultimately the wiring would go: Arcade Controls->JAMMA Interface->NES Control board->NES Console
  • Look at the cabinet in this eBay listing.  Somehow, this cabinet hooks a regular NES and controllers up to an arcade style joystick and buttons.

  • hey battymo congrats on the cab!, street fighter is an all time classic. I at one time had 9 different Arcades, but sold most of em, but i still held on to my x men 4 player machine, ms. pacman, and a broken TARG Arcade that i gotta sell lol. Anyways i recently made a MAME Set up and i got ALL my help from

www.arcadecontrols.com They have a big set of forums there and i know some guys there will be able to help ya out. in reality if you built a MAME Setup you could just have an emulator for NES on the PC and have all those games at your finger tips that way. Although alot of guys at Arcadecontrols are against destroying an original cab unless its a junky sports game. But street Fighter is a good cab/game, Might be best to restore it to all its glory, or im sure you could trade or sell it for an empty cab and more, for a MAME set up. Good luck man!

  • Thanks guys!

The cab is going to be restored for sure keeping as much as the original art as possible (what's left of it...). There were a lot of cigarette burns on the buttons and plexiglass pieces. I've ordered a set of new buttons and joy sticks, and picked up some new bulbs, plexiglass, and some black metal paint. A lot of the original paint has rusted and flaked off. I've got a lot of sanding ahead of me!

Right now the cabinet is in about 10 pieces on my kitchen floor. (My wife loves that!) Probably take me about a month, but I hope to restore some life back into it. I think I'll leave the existing monitor in it... though it does have a tiny bit of burn in, but is still plenty colorful and stable.

I'll keep you guys up to date with my progress. And I'll post some before and after pics for sure!
