Shelves?

While admiring your guys' collections I notice most of you have huge shelves. Where do you get them....or do you make then yourselves?

  • I ordered 2 of mine from BestBuy.com. They have some pretty large ones and for reasonable prices as well. I shopped around a bit and couldn't find a better deal to be honest.

Might sound corny but....garage sales are good for inexpensive shelves.

I got mine from Ace Hardware. Just bought the strips and screwed them into the wall and got movable shelves. Work nicely.

    Be well -

  • The one I currently have I got when I worked at Best Buy. It was $40, but only cost me $11. Of course at the time I never thought I'd fill it and didn't think about buying a few of them because they were so cheap. I don't think I can ever bring myself to buy anything at Best Buy again just because I know how big of a markup everything has.

Thanks MLN, I'll check out some garage sales, or maybe even Good Will.
  • I build all my shelves.  I don't have any updated photos of 'em though.  Building your own is your best bet, because you can make them any size so the games and stuff fit perfectly.  Your collection will look a lot neater if the games fit perfectly in the shelves.
  • Built mine too. Got the wood (oak) from Lowes. They even cut everything for me.
  • i bought mine from a drug store that weht out of business
  • I use 'Billy' bookcases from IKEA.

    They're perfect!

This with this extra shelf, so you get 4 rooms instead of 3

    or

this with 2 extra shelves gives you 8 rooms for games in the bookcase.

Each room fits 32 CIB NES games (or 23 CIB SNES games)

And as you can see in the first link there's different sizes (and different colors).

Here, here and here are some old pics to show you the shelves with games.

  • Building is the best without a doubt. I built my NES shelf with help from my old man. Got all the wood at lowes and staind it. Total cost was about $85.00 in materials and it came out Sweet>

  • I really like your shelves Parpunk!

I got a set of shelves at some large store in the States quite a few years ago, not sure which store it was anymore...but I think the set of shelves was meant for CDs or something like that. Fits NES carts almost perfectly, though...only pity is that it holds no more than ~340 carts, so I need to find or make more for my collection.
  • For my games I use CD Towers from Ikea.  I find a good rule of thumb for any shelving is that NES games are roughly the size of a CD case and twice as thick.  A lot of things made for CDs work really well for NES so long as there are not individual CD slots
