Nes games that you have given up on

  • I never beat the first Castlevania despite that glitch, Death always fucks me up. Ninja Gaiden is just one of those games that you play so much that after awhile, it's just reflexes and knowing everything that's gonna get you before it does. I think Ninja Gaiden's difficulty is overrated but that's not saying that it's a cakewalk either. By the way, the first two are nothing compared to part 3. That is one of the hardest games ever, that and Contra Hard Corps!
  • I know, Ninja Gaiden 3 is a joke. I got to like 4-2 or something, ran out of continues and gave up. I want to beat 1 or 2 before I try to seriously tackle 3. Once I get a Famicon converter I'm gonna buy the Japanese port of 3 cause you have unlimited continues and take less damage. It's a great game, just too hard. 1 and 2 are definitely beatable, I just haven't played them enough.....You're right about Contra Hard Corps, that game is impossible too

Buy Ninja Gaiden 3 the easy version from Coinhaven. That's what I plan to do once the money dictates.

Im gonna have to tie you on that one. We should have a shittiest NES player faceoff!
  • Difficulty on the nes is kinda weird. I suck at Mario games but I can no death run Ninja Gaiden 1 on a real good day. I can beat Super Contra in a couple lives but I just have some real issues with some of the platformers. Even somewhat easy ones like Jackie Chan took me forever to beat.

I just gave up on Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.  Twice, TWICE, I have been almost to the bridge to take down Mola Rom and I get killed by something stupid like a bat and have to start back over at level 9.  The game is totally beatable, but the cheap deaths make it NO FUN to keep beating your head against the wall trying to do so.  Plus, that stupid Wave 10 is more a game of luck than skill.  There comes a point when difficulty and fun cancel each other out, this is it.  Cheap deaths make an otherwise good game a trite piece of poo.

I may return some day when I have calmed down, but this game has inspired me to violence and must be set aside.

Oh, Temple of Doom. I feel your pain on this one, Stan. It's one of the games where after I beat it I celebrated the fact that I'd never have to play it again.

In response to a couple other posts, I don't think that using Holy Water on Death (and other bosses) to achieve an easier win is considered a glitch. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's just a smart way to use the weapons at your disposal. A glitch is a complete accident in the game's program that you can exploit like wall jumping in Super Mario Bros.

  • Definitely not a glitch, just good strategy. Same goes for Frank and Igor. Holy water stuns enemies, ALL enemies except Dracula. So tossing it on Death's platform or at Frank's feet is just the best possible strategy to defeating them. And a big "EUREKA!" moment for me, as Death was consistently kicking my ass as well back in the day.
  • Yeah you guys are right. It's not really a glitch. Just a strategy that requires great timing and perfect placement on the platform. Everytime I try it I get nervous and throw it too late or space it too far apart enabling him to start flying around.
  • stand on the farthest right block on the central platform. As soon as you see the first glimmer of Death appearing, jump and toss. (you are aiming the for the center of the two blocks below where he appears) Keep jumping and tossing and you are golden. He goes down in flames in seconds. Sissy.
  • My newest one is Battle Kid! That game has been kicking my ass for months now. Time to break and pick it up again in a couple of months.
  • Legacy of the Wizard. I seriously think I will never get through that one. Ever. image
  • I've taken about a month break from Battle Kid. Fucking SHIT. I'll come back to it though. I dunno, if a game is just hard by design I'll still come back to it. If it's unbelievably broken (like Deadly Towers) I just wont come back. Battletoads is one I will never EVER give up on. I will crush that game one day and it will be glorious.
  • let's see, we've got Battle Kid, Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden, you know the usual.

When I beat Ninja Gaiden, it was awesome and I was drunk off Four Loko energy beer too! Never give up, the ending is so worth it.
  • One game that I had forgotten to mention here was StarTropics. I had always heard good things about it, but for some reason, it just never clicked with me. The biggest problem I had was the control scheme in the dungeons. I've always hated those types of games where you're locked down on a grid, only able to move one square in any direction. I struggled all the way to Chapter 6, but eventually got fed up with all the cheap deaths and never bothered to finish.
  • After beating Conan, I'm convinced I can beat any game if I try hard enough and play it long enough image
  • As someone who has played Conan before, I can say with all certainty...You are a much bolder man than I, good sir.
  • I'm seeing 4 games pop up a lot, and I am really hoping someone can use this information. Maybe it will get someone's hope up, so they'll give it another try.

Mike Tyson's Punch Out - vs Tyson, the hardest part is definitely that first 1:30, where he knocks you out with 1 blow. Once you can develop the timing for that, you'll be home free - the rest comes from a bit of practice, but the first part is the worst.

TMNT - scrolls make the technodrome so much easier. Build up each turtle with a bunch of scrolls earlier in the game, and as you move through the technodrome, just let loose with a scroll as you walk (when it moves off the screen, release another one, and just keep moving).

Ninja Gaiden - not sure where everyone is having difficulties, but I always used to have problems with the 2nd form of Jacquio (the 2 curving projectiles were killer). If that's where your stuck, it makes a HUGE difference if you get to him, and have that spinning slash move. You can take him down in 2 hits. For me, I died the first time I battled him, and just had to make my way back to him a second time (with the slash move in hand). If you're stuck on a level, luckily, you can keep starting right there, and you'll improve with practice.

Battletoads - for me, the key to this game was memorization (enemy locations and the racing style levels). I used the 5 man code, and got good at accessing the warpzones, which can make the game so much easier (you get to skip a lot, moving from level 1->3, 3->5, 6->8). I have to admit that I used the 'pause' technique on that level where you ride a 1 wheeled vehicle. It was still a rewarding victory though.
  • Captain Comic - it's impossible (almost) to get through that hole! Also, on some places it's impossible to not get hit because you can't jump and can't hit the enemies (the blue and pink thing).
