Well MB7241 if you are the one who paid that insanely high amount for that box that outbid my insanely high price for it but you actually have the cart to match it then I congratulate you!
Heh...well, why the heck else would I have dropped that much on the box ? I got the cart about a week or so before that box "auction" from FibroFreak78 over at GTZ. She provided it to me assuming it was no more than a standard DK Jr. cart, and I was under the same impression. I guess it is slightly scarcer, after all.
wow, i've been out of the loop for quite a while. I didn't know you guys didn't know these three screw no codes existed. There are a whole slew of them. When i had my collection I had them all listed and cataloged, but that file has since been lost. From my previous black box hunting I had found that the variations on black box games included the following (not all had the variations though)
5 Screw no code famicom converter (never found this in cluclu land tho)
5 screw no code no fami converter
3 screw no code no security screws
3 screw code no security screws (gold round seal)
3 screw code security screws (gold round seal)
3 screw code security screws (white oval seal)
3 screw code security screws text/graphic on label brighter/duller (white oval seal, can't recall if it was brighter or duller, but this typically went along with 10 yard fight, golf and baseball and I don't recall seeing it on any other games).
Now i think that is about all of them and from collecting I can say I had LOTS of these weird variations so they are definitely out there.
I can confirm the existence of a three screw no code non security screw Wrecking Crew. I don't have it anymore but I most definitely had one when collecting as I had a bought a hang tab box wrecking crew and expected a five screw cart and got that. I was some what pissed and I never got over the fact that my cart never matched my box.
Dain, I doubt any conclusions can be made from the PCB. All the 5-screw PCB's I've seen are revision 1 and 2 NROM boards, my CAN version is revision 3, just like the one pictured, but that is probably coincidental. I've never seen anything less than an NROM -03 in a 3-screw cart.
You really could come up with a pretty convincing timeline of when all of these different variations (at least the cartridge/label ones) were introduced by cracking open a bunch of these early first-party carts and logging all of the chip and board info.
From the limited data set that I've gathered from my own collection and BootGod's database, I have:
3-screw, no code Sep-87 to Jan-88
oval seal introduced somewhere around 2Q89
security screws introduced somewhere around 3Q89
The oval seal and security screw dates are a little soft as there appear to be some carts with security screws that still have a round seal. I have less data here because I don't have a security bit to open these carts. I also intentionally have more round seals than oval seals.
Anyway, my point was going to be that Donkey Kong Classics has an "official" release date of Oct-88, so unless that date is false or they stopped manufacturing separate DK and DK Jr. carts a year in advance of its release there may be some 3-screw copies floating around.
If anyone wants to add some data to the information I've been gathering, feel free to send some my way.
No sh*t Dain. 3 new 3 screws to track down. Thank God I have non-hang tab boxes already for 2 of them. But now I need 3 more carts and the DK JR non-hang tab box. Talk about difficult.
Would any of the owners of the Gyromite, DK JR, or DK 3-screws consider a trade/sale to me? Obviously I have literally tons to trade.
I think I will hold onto my Gyromite 3 screw for now. I would just like to see if any more show up. A one of a kind sounds pretty cool, but if that number starts to decrease then so will my desire to keep it.
I just saw a photo I took from around a year ago and it looks like there are two 3-screw Gyromites in it. I don't have the other one anymore and it could have been a CAN version that I did not recognize. It's at best another piece to this puzzle.
EDIT: PUZZLE SOLVED!! (I hope)
I just went and looked in another spot where I had some games and found the other 3-screw Gyromite! The only difference is the back sticker, it has the REV-A on it and no production number stamp? I think we can still confirm its existence:
After talking with Bootgod earlier on MSN, we both agree this is legit. My cart is plant 08 (on back label) and plant 08 didn't make any 5 screw games from the current info we have now. Plus all the PCB and chip info matches with what it should. I think we are 100% confirmed on these now, esp since Erik has 2 boxes that match it.

Btw, Erik...your DK Jr. non-hangtab box owner mystery will be solved soon, I've a strange feeling...

Awesome! I think it is 100% verified now!
Well maybe I will bid on that, my luck though, it will just be the CAN one
Good point. That could be true...

Posting in buy, sell & trade momentarily!
Is it me or does one say "made in Japan" on the front and one doesn't?
They both say "Made in Japan" on the front.
I got this in a lot off ebay. HERE Crazy how a game goes from unconfirmed to very confirmed in such a short time. Now to wrangler the box from Erik...
