Nostalgia

Does nostalgia drive your gaming?  I'm almost gotten all the NES games I remember from my childhood and I'm going to start picking up titles I've never played before.  How's everyone feel about first impressions of NES games 20 years old?

  • Nostalgia is a very big part of collecting to me. The games I've picked up that I hadn't ever played, are still fun though.
  • Nostalgia inspired my collection.

    Oh ya!
  • I never lived in the NES age. The games and overall quality was what made me start collecting.
  • I started getting the games I liked from the rental shops. Then I started getting the games that I always wanted to try out. Next I got the games that I never heard of that were cheap. Sometime after that, I said " Mason, why don't you just go for the complete set. It cant be that hard right?"; boy was I wrong.

    Ditto, Ditto!

On the last part that should be obvious Dan.  You come back here just to see how Batty can fit you and pee in your shower into a new poll each day.  Sheesh I thought everyone knew that?

This is what I find interesting.  How old are you?  Do you play newer consoles?
  • I've never had nostalgia about the NES. I just sort of... never stopped playing. I think 1996 was when I bought the first 'new' game for NES outside of its lifespan. I was bored of the current consoles of the day and NES games were super cheap at the time. Even still, the NES was always hooked up in my room and got regular use throughout the lifespan of the SNES and was always there when I got bored with the N64 and Playstation... which was pretty regularly.

I just turned 14. All I ever used to want was an XBOX, but I had to settle for the older consoles that I could only buy on my own (I had the stereotypical "video games rot your brain" parents). I did get around to playing newer consoles (although the only current-gen console I own is the Wii), and I thought they were lackluster. Sure there were a couple gems in the bunch, but it was mainly first-person shooters, driving games, or a GTA 3 clone. The NES still has the most originality in my eyes.

Oh yeah, and now, I could care less about owning an XBOX.
  • It is an aquired taste but has a solid foundation in nostalgia.
  • I still live in the 80's basically. Modern stuff like twitter, itunes, myspace, I dont really think about it as being current, my mind is still sort of in the 80's. Have a lot of great memories from that era, it was a great decade to grow up.

For example, the last youtube videos I've watched (this week) were muppet babies, nes commercials, real ghostbusters, knight rider intros, etc image

I remember the nes very well. I only had the basic system (mario, duck hunt). I remember a friend had the power pad, that was huge back then. Very innovative for 80's kids entertainment. Very different than buying a modern ipod or wii. No one had ever seen anything like it. It was all very fun.
  • Nostalgia (or NEStalgia!) was a huge part for me, I always had alot of fun playing my NES as a kid and I wanted to relive some of that. Recently, I started collecting games I remembered playing as a kid. Which led to me wanting games I heard were good. Which led to me asking myself, why stop there?! It definitely is an addiction now.
  • My parents would never buy me an NES. So part of me is getting as an adult what they wouldnt buy me as a kid. The other part is I feel is if my husband and I own a shop I better as hell somewhat know what Im doing image
  • Nope NES was long after my childhood. I played a nes at my brother in laws one day and got into gaming from that point. all we had as kids was board games

    Same for me, too.
I think most people start out because of the nostalgia. But nostalgia doesn't explain why I want every game for every system.

BEST RESPONSE EVER. I completely agree, though. Nostalgia is why I started collecting, but I want to get every game. It's still nostalgic to me every time that I get a game. I've even found games I forgot I ever played. It's great!
  • I never had an nes growing up, nor knew anything about it... yet it is my favorite system of all time image

I never had one growing up either yet a couple friends did and I just couldn't believe how cool it was and how much better than other systems I'd played.

So... flash forward fifteen years I decided I HAD to finally have one and a few favorite carts.    Errr... and then my collecting habits took over image

Lol. We've essentially got the exact same goals in collecting you nut-case! image
Plus, my lats are bigger than yours.

  • Nostalgia plays a role, but it's definately more than that. I started going back and beating a bunch of games I could never beat as a kid. Then I picked up a few I wanted. Then I bought my first large lot on ebay and started discovering tons of great games I'd never even heard of. It was downhill from there.

I love finding the diamonds in the rough and playing the crap out of my orginal toaster.
