NYC Release NES '85

I know matt (matt78tv) has one because I've seen his YouTube video of it. Any of you guys own one of these? If not, what's your lowest serial number? My lowest is in the 13 million range. I believe the initial batch of NESs that were released in NYC and wherever else they were first marketed was about 100,000 units.

  • Can you date all NES consoles from their serial #?
  • I didn't get one until 1989, and it was Power Set, so I'm sure my serial number is ridiculously high.
  • Would I be right to assume that these NYC '85 releases are Deluxe Sets?
  • Mine came straight from a rob set but the box doesn't say deluxe on it!

exactly, the earliest NES sets (the ones that included the ROB were completely identical to the later released Deluxe Set, but didn't say "Deluxe" on the packaging.
  • I first played the NES in the summer of 1985. We stayed at a beach house at the Jersey Shore with some family friends and they had a NES(think they lived in a test market area) I remember playing Golf, Pinball, and Duck Hunt.

Me and my brother decided then and there that we'd spend our Christmas money on a NES and we bought our on DEC 26th, 1985

**edit** looks like scott beat me to it, but here is another one anyway, just for extra clarification.
  • Definitely my favorite boxed system!
  • Definitely an awesome box to have. Do you have the paper work for it too?

From what I've seen in this thread, I'm pretty sure it was the Deluxe Set (unnamed at the time). Although, I think there could have been some Control Deck sets around back then.

I'm 99.9% sure that it was only released in the Deluxe Set (without the name) at first. The reason why is because Nintendo wanted to make the system look more like a toy instead of a video game system, and that was pretty much the reason why they made R.O.B in the first place. You gotta remember this system was made after the video game crash of '83, and since people were losing interest in video game systems, Nintendo was smart and marketed the NES to look more like a toy (thanks to the inclusion of R.O.B.

wow...that looks weird....not in a bad way though. I never knew it wasn't called  a deluxe set. That's really neat. Does anything like that carry a premium since I'm sure they are rarer than the deluxe set?

I would have to check. It has the manual for sure. The rob is pretty much unused! I paid 220 for it with 12 black boxed games.

That ebay auction is the reason I founds this site ask quillivoie he knows about it image
  • huh, cool stuff! guess you learn something new everyday.
  • Wow I never knew about the "non-deluxe" deluxe set either! Very cool!
  • I've seen the Deluxe Set box without the "Deluxe Set" text on it before several times...it's not as rare as you might think (though it certainly isn't common). It would be nice to have, though image .
  • Mine is in the 13 million range, I didn't get my first NES until '89-90.

haha. one year and one day after I was born image

  • I have brand new one of these Deluxe sets without the "deluxe" printing on the box. Everything is still in the bags. I'd have to check the serial # to make sure it's under 100,000 or whatever number it is, but I'm almost positive it is.

I'll try to take a look at it this week and determine what it is.

Number N0095700.  If you notice, the Gyromite and Duck Hunt are missing.  Those have been removed.  Other than that, this Deluxe set is brand new and hasn't ever been played.
