Has anybody had a shelf or bin break that held your collection??

I was sitting in my game room last night and a thought popped into my mind. " Is my shelving strong enough for my games? What would happen if it broke and I came in on a huge mess? How mad would I be if something got damaged?"

So i ask y'all, has this ever happened to you? What happened? Did anything get messed up?

  • When I went shopping for a cheap shelf I never thought about it until one of the store employees brought it up. Just make sure the span isn't too long!
  • I've had collectibles get damaged by storage bins that cracked (mostly the bottom bins of stacks of 6 bins high). Now I place solid pieces (i.e. shelves) in-between to spread out the weight (the cracks came from wheels located on the bottom of the bins).
  • no but my wife got ticked off at me once and threw all my games on the floor. lol
  • We saw this happen first hand last year at the expo, one of the shelves in the VGA case fell out and the sealed games went everywhere, it was quite loud.

any big damage to any games?
  • a few weeks back i came home to find out that my mint earthbound was lying on my desk (normally on display on a shelf).. apparantly my mom bumped into my desk.. tipped over my rodland, which fell on my earthbound which plummeted to the ground image

no visible damage tho thank god
  • surely not Mason, they were in those VGA cases, so I'm sure the games were fine..

Ah! They had to "regrade" them all!
  • well you never know. I imagined it hitting a concrete floor at just the right angle as to pop open the case. Man I have a weird imagination.
  • Hehe, since the games were already graded, you can trash them as much as you want and still sell them as "9.5 grade" image

That was some loud scary shit!  Me and Dain immediately looked over at each other like oh shit.  I am pretty sure Tom from VGA is the one that knocked them down (on accident) from bryanstoys iirc.  I was so glad we had event insurance even though we didn't have to use it.

  • I had a shelf become separated from a wall one day...that shelf at the time had all my PS1 and PS2 imports neatly displayed on it (and then they were all in the floor...I was there to watch the disaster). Once that happened, I put it back in place, and now it doesn't have nearly the amount of weight on it image . The only shelf I'm really worried about now is the one that goes over my bed (it has a boxed TI-99/4A on it, a small stack of magazines, and a few other things). If that should fall while I'm asleep...it's probably game over for me image .

lol,  You probably shouldn't have a shelf full of stuff directly over your bed.  image   Earthquake anyone.

  • I had a shelf fall before. I think I had 600 or so games on it, and apparently it wasn't leaning back on the wall as I thought it was. I placed a game into it and it starting falling forward towards me. Luckily I caught it and was able to stabalize it, but still had a good 200-300 games fall out of it. This really freaked me out because my bed is right under it. Made it hard to sleep after that. image

This guy knows what he's talking about!

Back in High School, I had my bed under some shelves filled with random games/collectables. One night, the rod on the house got struck by lightning and a bunch of random shit fell on my head, and an old, tall, metal Copenhagen can gave me a black eye.

  • My shelf completely broke and all my nes games came tumbling to the floor ;_;

If that were me, that story would read "My ex-wife..." image

And haven't you guys ever seen an L bracket? You put it on the top (or sides) of the shelf. One screw goes into the shelf, and the other into the wall. That way they don't fall forward.

No shelf has broke on me, but I seem to have a bad habit of dropping stacks of NES games when I am moving things. I really need to get a bigger shelf so I don't need to move them so often...
  • It's never happened to me but I've always thought about this happening. You've got to remember, though... games are light as hell. You've got to have a lot of games, and a brick, for it to fall.
  • This past summer I was moving a couch through the game room (like an idiot by myself) and knocked over 6 shelves of games IT WAS AWFUL!
  • I set a box down on the ground at the back of the blazer I had at GameCore...picked the box up to put it in the back and 'fwoosh!' about 5 inches off the ground the bottom gave out and all the games came tumbling out.I halfass set the box back onto the ground as best I could and luckilly I had an empty box in the back to transfer them!
  • I work at Kmart and before last Christmas I was working in the games department. At the time they had super shitty cabinets (one stacked on the other) with long draws. Well anyway, I opened the top draw and apparently the bottom draw wasn't completely stable and WHAMMO - the whole thing falls on me. GAMES EVERYWHERE>>>

Needless to say, some DS games were written off that day.. as well as an incident report image
