What Kind of Collector are you?

When I first got back into collecting NES, my goal was to build a gigantic collection of everything and anything. But now my goal has changed. I really don't want crap games that will just sit on a shelf and embarrass me by owning. This might change once I get everything that's on my "want list". But to me a perfect collection are just the games I enjoy playing and the ones symbolize the greatness of NES and that period of it's hayday.

At first I said I only wanted NES, but then found myself wanting a SNES again. I got one, then it snowballed. I now have NES, SNES, Genesis, Atari 2600, N64 and Gamecube. Gamecube is as modern as I like it, I think.

Anyway, after playing some of the "newer" systems (N64 is newer by my standards..being a child of the 8-bit era), I've come to realize I wasn't so off by only, or mostly liking NES.

I guess I'm blasphemer, but I think N64 and Wii are crap systems with crappy and lame games. Gamecube has a lot of cool stuff though.

So I'm not really sure if I am a collector or not. Had I found a "Stadium Events", I'd most likely sell it to buy games and stuff I actually want to own. I also don't get or see the point in owning two of the same game because one has 3 screws and one has 5.

  • I am a bad ass collector!
  • A perfect collection for me is a complete collection. Luckily I can define the term complete myself and it might change when I'm getting closer to my current definition image.
  • Im pretty much wanting a cib nintendo collection. nes, snes, n64, gamecube, wii

I started about the same genesis, atari, playstation, intellivision etc. just to much, you would fill every room in a house
  • I am mostly collecting nes loose, but I upgrade to cib when i get a good deal. My apartment is way to small to collect anything else.
  • I'm a random collector. I see shiny things for cheap and buy! hehe
  • The jaded and broken from 15 years of watching the thing mature on the internet kind.
  • i agree with the comment that the 64 and the cube sucked. The nes was and is the best. I loved the SNES and still play it. The wii, however, is a solid console. Zelda, mario galaxy, and mario kart are about as good as you can get.

I collect random as well, but mainly just nes games and playchoice 10.
  • I guess you could say I'm a collector for all systems, but I am only aiming for complete collections for the nes and saturn. The rest of my systems I just get the games I enjoy, or the really rare ones if I find them cheap.
  • My main goal right now is the NES and partially the SNES. I collect loose copies, but if I see some CIB deals, I go for them.
  • I pretty much collect for all the systems, but I'm trying to focus on NES, N64, and Sega Master the most. I was hoping to get everything CIB but now i'll running out of space fast in my room so I might have to re-think that.
  • I collect cib games from the atari era to the ps1 era.
  • I collect the games I've never got a chance to play as a kid. If it's CIB great, if not, I don't care. Just gimme' da' game so I can play it!
  • Everything CIB. It's just a better way to store and keep things organized and clean.

Anyways, I collect for all the Nintendo consoles (probably not getting into Game & Watch, though). My GameCube collection is noticeably smaller than the rest. It wasn't bad, but it was pretty bland because it lacked stand-out titles (I'm glad they put it in the Wii though). Believe it or not, the Wii actually is one of my favorite consoles because to me, Nintendo stopped caring about the graphics, and made video games FUN again. Plus, it still has potential for a long life ahead (Wii Power Pad, anyone?).

Funny thats the same reason I don't normally like to collect CIB image
  • Well, I mean with manuals and all, it's a good way to keep it together. Plus it protects the games from damage and dust.
  • I used to be an "anything and everything" collector until I hit about 250 loose nes and a handful of cib NES games. Then had the realization that all they were doing was sitting on a shelf and that is totally lame. So I sold off all but about 50 NES games and have continued collecting for NES, SNES, Famicom, Gamecube (which is totally not a lame system... has some great games), Wii, Genesis, Xbox... but only those games that I will actually play. It's been a good way to do it because it limits the amount of space my console collection takes up. I have also gotten more into the arcade scene so quite a bit of my spare money has gone towards buying/restoring those. Next up is a full restoration on my VS. Dualsystem cabinet. Going to paint it "DK Jr. Orange" which is the same color as was used on the Dualsystem in the flyer for Vs. Balloon Fight. I'm also working on creating marquees for VS. Balloon Fight as there are none of these available anywhere.
  • for retro consoles i buy pretty much anything i can find. for the ps3/360/ds i usually just buy the games i want to play, i'm now collecting the wii so i buy anything i find for really cheap but only buy the $50+ games i really want to play.
  • I collect games for just about every system. Well, systems I own anyway. I mostly buy lose games, but there are a couple of systems (SMS, Jaguar) that I like to get boxed games for. I'm also kind of a sucker for bad games. I tend to have fun with them, and I've never heard of an NES game bad enough for me to not display proudly with my other games.
  • I really don't like anything after the 16-bit era besides Gamecube and the amount of good games for it is small, but I can say the same for SNES and Genesis.
Hell, when it comes to Genesis I really only like Mortal Kombat and Altered Beast. I never got heavily into that system. Might have to do with getting Shaq-Fu as a gift! That might of turned me off...

NES to me really represents the golden age. Having played some of the newer systems I can say with 100% conviction that I was always right when I said good graphics don't make a game good.

But as I said, I don't want everything. There are a lot of lame games out there. All I want is what I used to have and remember....along with some good ones I never played before.

Good is subjective though. I'm sure many would think JAWS is crap, but I like it. Some games I think are crap, but I want them anyway for the memories I guess. Like I'll never play Skate or Die ever again, but I remember it being a popular title and renting it in the day.

Ironsword isn't a favorite among many, but I played it obsessively.
  • I like to have CIB games. But boxes take up so much damn room if you don't have a huge room dedicated to games/consoles. I started putting boxes on my ceiling after I ran out of shelf room. So I accept cart/manual for most games.

I just started getting into N64. So had to buy another drawer for those. Can anyone recommend some fun games for N64?
  • Strictly SNES, NES, and N64 CIB collector. I keep the looses, but upgrade them to CIB's. Any other system I get goes F/S to fund the Nintendo stuff.
  • I think once I get every cart I want, I will then focus on getting manuals and boxes for them.
  • NES, cart only, not sure how far I plan to go with collecting for this console though. I get games that I want, and will eventually get around to playing them all, though some more than others, everything does get played, so I'm not just getting them just to have 'em. But will I expand into collecting sports games, mmm, perhaps certain ones, but uncertain at this time. Gameshow games, Sesame Street and other preschooler type games, eh, probably not, would never play these other than to try them out for a first and most likely only time. Unlicensed, only to a certain extent, but not my main priority, except for the more common higher profile ones such as those from Tengen. There are some Famicom games that I really like and would love to have, but I really don't see me ever going for collecting imports for this console. Same thing with unreleased, protos, homebrews, only if I want it really really badly. I'm not into collecting varients, or having multiple copies of the same game, waste of money which I can use towards another completely different game.

Currently I have 385 NES games (386 if I count Happy Camper, but I don't see that as being part of the regular game collection, more of a trophy item), and I figure somewhere between 450-500 games would be a great collection where I would have everything that I'd ever really want for this console that I know for sure that I'll play, anything over that is just excess just for the sake of having it all, but I may not even go that far.

Playstation is my other console that I collect for, but unlike for the NES, my PS games have to be complete. Every PS game I have I got everything to them except for that I'm missing the back covers for two of them. I do have a handful of import games for the PS, games I got when I went through a phase when I was heavily into studying Japanese back in the late 90s, but as for whether I'll get back into collecting imports, don't know, but it is even more a possibility than if I were to get Famicom games. As for what games I get for the PS, just like how I'm stricter on having to have my games complete for this system, I'm also not going to just get any ol' games either, only what I think will be good or at least seems as though it might interest me, just too many games for this console, and a lot more types of genre as well, many of which wouldn't interest me at all, also many games take much longer to beat, I don't want hundreds of games in my collection and find that I may most likely never get around to ever getting close to beating them all.

For the PS I have 78 (US) and 7 (JP) games, but as for how far, how many games I plan on having for this console, totally unknown at this time, there are still a ton of games I either know for sure I want to add to my current collection, or may be curious about but still don't know much about them, or perhaps heard about the game but haven't yet given the game any consideration, and then there are still many more I know nothing about that are just awaiting my attention, to show me what they are about.

As for other consoles, I dunno, there's just too much out there, can't have it all, and could spend a lifetime trying to get everything, I know for sure I don't want to do that. Besides, I tend to get irrated when I have too much stuff laying around, takes up a lot of space and causes me even more indecisiveness when chosing a game to play, so I prefer to focus on just one or two really great consoles that I love, and even though I may have a ton of games for each, at least its all for the same console.
  • I am strictly NES licensed NTSC cart only. However I have a twist. I only want one copy of each game. But, it has to be the hardest variant to find. I will pick up nice looking loose carts on the cheap and if a harder to find variant comes along and I can aford it I will snag it.

On the other hand my daughter collects ANYTHING Street Fighter. Steve and I are thinking of upgrading her CIB SNES SF collection to sealed since she has done so well with the sealed GEN game she has.
  • That is so odd, a little girl taking to Street Fighter like that. Girl's looking to learn to kick ass and bust balls early.
